Solo Ads - which are better - pay per click from email lists or CPM from Ezines?

I am about to launch a big solo ads campaign so I have been researching the options available to us. There appear to be two distinct possibilities:

Firstly, one can buy solo ads from people with established lists, which effectively equates to the usual email marketing that we all know and love. It is just that your email, in the form of a solo ad, gets sent to someone else's list. These ads are normally sold on a cost per click basis. If you deal with reputable vendors, you will often get more clicks than you actually pay for.

The second method is to place solo ads with Ezine owners. In most cases these can also be solo ads. These are often sold on a CPM, or cost per thousand impressions, basis. Obviously one would want to maximise the number of clicks because the ad will go out to the entire email/ezine list for which you pay a set fee, regardless of the number of clicks one gets.

So it seems that one can buy clicks from list owners from around 30c to say 80c, depending on the vendor. CPM should run from about $1-$4 to be effective, but one can pay a lot more for smaller, more responsive emails.

For those of you that have tried these two different methods, which one converts best in your experience and why?

personally i like to use solo ads where you are guaranteed a certain number of clicks

i find it much easier to work out your numbers

for instance if i buy a 100 click solo ad i know that i will get around 35 - 70 new subscribers and if my oto page converts at say 10% i would make around 3 - 7 OTO sales

i try and keep things simple and this works great for me :-)

I agree with you on that Paul. We use both methods of course but it can sometimes be a little easier when you already know how many clicks you are going to have, of course having a good offer and sales funnel is always crucial.

You should focus on having a solid sales funnel then,
Test your traffic and simply see what works better,
I love ppc because I have mastered it to a level where
I'm getting high quality clicks for pennies on the dollar.

    Never pay per click!

Just negotiate a good price and let them run YOUR email.

If you buy a fixed number of clicks mots of the time the vendor writes his own swipe: you get the clicks yes, but the value is VERY questionable.

That's a pretty valid comment. People can feel duped into getting to your squeeze page if the solo-ad vendor has sent them a crap email or spam. The best solo- ads are the ones where the email is consistent with your squeeze page (helps to pre-sell and target those clicks too). I like to get the provider to show me what they have sent, and get on their list beforehand.

I've not done any newsletter / ezine style ads yet, but am planning too. The numbers suggest that if its done right you'd get better value clicks.

Solo ads are pretty good. They are effective and they work. You can get from 1+ sub to as many possible- it just depends how convincing your solo ad is. If it's very convincing than many people will opt-in. All these methods work- you just gotta know when and where to position them.
