Own VPS email server vs traditional ESP

Am currently using one of the top Email Service Providers (ESP's) or Autoresponder service providers if you like.

The open rate has been going very low despite adding new subscribers over time..
I always send quality content and reply to every email from my subscribers..
Yesterday I got an email from one of my subscribers that they no longer get my emails since around end of march.

So I suspected that most of my emails are either heading to Junk despite my subscribers whitelisting me or not getting beyond the ISP level..

So i decided to do a test and downloaded a list from my ESP and uploaded on PHPList on my web hosting account.. its was small portion of the list that wouldn't get affected by throttle settings..

Guess what.. I got more 3x more clicks to a link from phplist than from the ESP..

Am really concerned as it affects my business..

So I need advice from someone who has used their own mail service on VPS vs using the usual ESP suspects Awb, GR, MailC et.. al..

NB: I wont mention the ESP am using, as after researching they all have their good and bad.. my question is ESP vs. selfhosted on VPS

    I use a self-hosted autoresponder on a VPS.

In addition to sending e-mail from my own server, I've
also got the flexibility to choose external SMTP servers
    like AmazonSES, smtp.com, etc.

I use ActiveCampaign which I've found to be much better
        than Interspire.

We provide mail solutions for larger mailing clients and do it all in-house as well. Be it on either a VPS, or more often a dedicated server.

Hosting it on your own gives you complete control and flexibility, not to mention it is also much cheaper. I can't imagine how much it would cost to send a million emails a day through AWeber or any of the other standard providers!

There is a lot to email marketing and a lot of work involved with it. Setting up email authentication, feedback loops, IP rotation and the like can get very complex. But the reward is also very high!

Seeing as this is an area of expertise for us, do you perhaps have any more specific questions as well as could help with?

Have you set spf, rDNS, DKIM? To successfully inbox, you need the proper setup.

Shaun, would you mind sharing what package you bought from ActiveCampaign? I can only see monthly plans on their website, no self-hosted script to buy.
    Thanks.

Active campaign is the worst self hosted software platform for email marketing. If you know a coder have them take a look under the hood and see how inefficient it is. Interspire Email Marketer is better but also has many issues even with the many professional addons. The most well kept self hosted platform is OEMPRO along with PowerMTA (as the mailing transfer agent). Power MTA is very expensive but there are a many people out there who are willing to sell "alternate" versions of it cheap. ( I have used all of the above mentioned software, fully licensed and legal versions. )
