Can your e-commerce be hacked through your laptop?

I'm using a second hand laptop, it's about 2 years old and it was used by a good few other people before given to me (within the family) what i'm concerned about is i know in the past it has had a few viruses on it and although most were simply removed, at this point in time i don't know if there are any other viruses still present, it seems okay. I have installed Avast anti virus free, and Comando firewall free, but what i was considering before opening my e-commerce store (ready to go live) and doing all the surrounding and related things online was to just buy a new laptop and then install new anti-virus software.

So basically what i'm asking is do you need to get a new laptop before doing all this secure activity online or is it just as simple as getting premium anti-virus and firewall on the existing laptop? Thanks for any advice.

  • If it was me, I would scan the computer with both malwarebytes (Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download) and superantispyware (SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!)

Both have free editions. If they don't find anything, then you should be ok. Notice I said should!

  • You mentioned Avast, and if you pick the 'boot time scan' option, that is a very thorough cleaning operation. I downloaded it and did that for a friend's computer that he was having problems with, and it found about a dozen nasties. Selected 'delete' for all of them, and according to him the computer was faster from then on.

The programs that rosetrees mentioned do get a lot of positive comments. If I felt like being super, super cautious, I would probably run one or both of those too.
