Getting wrong traffic about Ryan Lochte!

Since it was just the Olympics and I wrote this article during the Olympics, I decided to create some content about Ryan Lochte and what Internet Marketers can learn from.

Viral content gone wrong!

Now Google picks it up as the keyword "ryan lochte" and some other "longer keywords including lochte", bringing me traffic about him.

Now that traffic is not relevant at all with what I said in the article.

I mentioned Lochte somewhat often in the article and Google thinks it is totally about him, when I am just using him as an EXAMPLE.

Has that happened to you?

I do that with keywords targeting current events all the time. It's a great way to bring temporary traffic very quickly from the SE's. If you use that technique with twitter, google will often pick it up in just a few hours, depending on the popularity of the topic. I don't do it to spam google, but to bring targeted traffic to a relevant subject.

Cool, but if the event is not relevant to what you are promoting, than it is utterly useless! That is what I think.

That's what I said... "to bring targeted traffic to a relevant subject"

I don't use this technique unless I'm targeting traffic specific to that relevant topic.

Using data from places like Alexa What's Hot, Google Trends, Google Insights, Twitter search, Youtube, and few others (paid services), I sometimes find a current event that's gone viral and may have a certain product associated with it. If I can acquire a quick affiliate agreement with said product, I then slap up a review site and generate traffic to it using the method mentioned --- I automate most of this process by the way.

It almost always works, and almost always pays off!

This is not my primary way of making money by far, but I have used this method numerous times when certain "targets of opportunity" have arisen and done well with it.

      Gotcha

Smart move to make once in a while.

Plus, people are more apt to buy during a big event.

One time, I made up a t-shirt and coffee cup design to conincide with a major event by a certain entertainer (which I detest by the way) and placed it quickly on cafepress. I directed highly targeted traffic to it using the method I mentioned earlier in this thread, and cleaned house with it.

You have to be careful with something like this, so that you don't infringe on anyone's copyrights. I didn't, but was very creative in my design. Believe it or not, the coffee-cup did better than the t-shirt. I did very well that week!
