Stop With the Whining About Signatures Already!

I really don't understand the sudden backlash against signatures.

For some reason, I've been hammered by a small subset of members over my signature as have a few other members.

Newsflash! Signatures are allowed! If you don't like them, don't look at them!

There are many experienced folks on these boards that give out FREE information (and lots of it). In exchange, they (we) are permitted to display a signature.

Who cares what someone's motive is for posting? As long as the information provided is good (not just a single, "what he said" one-liner or some random common-sense info), what does it matter if the poster displays a signature or not? The information in the post is still good and still FREE.

This is a marketing forum. To be horrified by a signature seems ridiculous.

Nobody is MAKING you purchase a product or service from a signature. If someone's signature doesn't appeal to you, ignore it and move along.
#main internet marketing discussion forum #signatures #stop #whining
  • I agree. Given that I run a web hosting company, I have paid for a signature, and provide what I feel to be excellent advice & help here as much as I can. Almost every thread that I've posted in, 90% of the time if it has anything to do with hosting, signatures get disabled.
  • Who's complaining, as long as it's relevant to the forum threads it can actually help others.

I've bought many awesome product/services from other warriors' signature links.

    • I've been targeted myself several times and I've seen it in other threads as well.

  • Hi Wolf, hope you're having a great day buddy.
I have recently been following a lot of your posts in the SEO sub forum as you're one of the few people in this space I have any time for (as well as the likes of Yukon and Paulgl).

I honestly think that the backlash against you in particular which i've witnessed countless times is due to the fact that you've been proven correct with the recent EMD Google update. You have been saying that day would come for a very long time and sure enough it happened. Thus, a load of really frustrated posters have been having a go at you due to jealousy, frustration and possibly anger!

Don't take it to heart Wolf, take it as a good sign that your business model is the right one and that authority sites (Amazon review sites in your case) are the way to go and always have been IMO. Take it all with a pinch of salt and realise that people posting just wished they had listened to you in the first place.

  • The only complaints against signatures I've seen are against people whose posts contribute nothing to the thread or who start pointless threads just to get their signature viewed (or increase their post count). Are people whining about signatures in general? If so, that's silly as almost all forums allow them.
    • [1] reply
    • I agree completely with your sentiment. Unfortunately, I've seen many other cases where sigs have been attacked simply because they are there.
      • [1] reply
  • So wait... why did you take your sig down?

People are mad I get it, but why give them the control and take it down?
I mean was the harassment really that bad? It was an amazon link and I clicked on your sig probably 4-5 times. Actually liked your offer unlike 95% of offers I see on here.

I'd put that sig back up and tell people to kiss my ass (sounds rude but this is a marketing forum afterall).
    • [ 2 ] Thanks

    • Agree.

      Put your signature back.

If the whiners don't like it, tell them to kiss your ass. Seriously. :p

p.s. Take a look at my signature... LOL At least take a look at the paid banner in my signature...

  • Don't let it get to you.

I read the last reply in that thread before by a member who I won't name and I thought it was extremely harsh considering your method is the only method which has worked for me in a long time. Plus you give out a crap load of info for free...

Haters gonna hate and so on.

    • To me, thats the problem. The "difference" is a matter of location. The top of your post, or the bottom.

People are allowed to market with their sigs, but only allowed to discuss marketing in this forum. Seems like a huge conflict of interest.

While members are busy "discussing marketing" their sigs are screaming "click here". So to me, in every thread there is marketing being done... no matter how you look at it. If there is a sig, there is marketing.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I have wondered if there's better ways.
    • I wouldn't take that heading too seriously. "Discussion forum" is an oxymoron, as a forum's purpose is discussion.

I understand English is probably not your native language, so it might be wise to defer to those of us for whom it is.

Oh man, don't mind them. Insecure people will always be insecure. As long as you're not breaking any forum rule, you're free to do whatever you want.
  • I cant agree with you more.

    • Likewise here -- I've been here seven years, have over 5k posts, and never gotten a single complaint about my sig. Not sure why the OP's experience is so radically different from yours and mine that he needed to start a thread about it? I haven't noticed any recent backlash about sigs, or any "whining" about them. Doesn't mean there isn't any, but I haven't seen it.

Not putting the OP into this category, but I DO see lots of sigs every day that break one or more rules, and/or people who post lots of junk one-line posts for sig exposure and/or to increase post count. Members understandably complain about those.

    • I am in the same boat with you. Why else would I spend so much time giving away FREE information? I guess some folks don't understand the concept.
  • I guess I'm not sure what all the discussion is about. There are rules that specify what can be in a signature. If you follow the rules, it doesn't matter what anyone says. If you break the rules then you deserve whatever criticism you get!

Chris, take your logic elsewhere. There are torches to light and pitchforks to set aflame .

I think Jason summed things up perfectly (in regards to sigs not really being a problem. No one complains about mine), and I'm in the same boat. You either like it or you don't. Nobody makes anybody else come to the forum and there is an option to turn signatures off so you don't have to see them. The whining isn't needed.

  • Ahahaha! Wolf---

You just want people looking at your signature. It's the least obtrusive of any I have seen on here.

Here- I'll do you a favor and not click on any of those links in your sig.

    • Well, that's really my point. Alistair happens to be one of the folks who felt it necessary to slam me over a sig in another thread. He(?) then comes here and throws in another one-line zinger.

When asked to defend it, he refuses.

I'm not sure what I've ever done to this specific member but the behavior just seems odd.

  • This is totally true! i just had some member bash me about my sig and that is says

"A new member joins every min"

    This is what he says..

"Sidenote: another thing that would make me look for another solution is when you read a line like "A new member joins every min" then being directed to a site listing all new members which have registered alot more than a minute apart - just saying - I shut the page down purely based on that alone."

Heres the funny part.. My site does get a new member per min on average this warrior member was just being a rude straight out . for no reason.. all i can think is " Warrior Haters" at this point..

  • It's amazing how much time and energy people waste complaining about simple shit like signatures.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Ok as there is only one side to the story then I'll give you mine if you want. I can't speak for others but I guess they had the same view as me and that's why they had a "whine", even though I wouldn't say what I said as you quoted above is whining or slamming you, but ok.

First though I'd like to ask you why do you think people critisized you and you're signature? Have you really thought about it? All I get from your thread is that you put yourself over as some kind of victim and cleverly put everybody else with a signature in your boat with you. Personally I think you're whining a bit but whatever.

The reason I think why people were whining was because it doesn't take a Joseph Robinson to work out what was going on.

If I had a penny for every time I've read on a thread in the last week, but last Saturday really, how you've been telling people for ages about emds blah blah blah or suchlike I'd have £12.69.

You may consider that as free and helpful info but it was in fact, now let's try to be honest here, just to expose your updated emd related signature to an audience that couldn't have been more targeted, plain and simple. Plain and simple aren't the audience by the way, that's just a saying. Anyway, nothing wrong with that maybe, but quite frankly I'm surprised that the amount of times your signature was appearing on Saturday it didn't trigger Googles spam algorithim on its own.

Of course people can have signatures or not and I'm really not bothered one way or the other. Really I'm not. But making out like you're oblivious as to why people were having a go is just plain silly for want of a better word. Maybe fluffythewondercat could enlighten me on that one?

People don't like spamming and that's how it appeared. Right or wrong, that's exactly how it appeared and to more than one person clearly.

Ever heard the old truism, "There's no smoke without fire"?

The reason I didn't want to say all this is because it isn't productive as you obviously don't see what other people obviously saw. There's also people on here that only say things that they think others like to hear regardless of what's right or not because they are sheep and brown nose, but I don't.

So there you have it. I'm not lying, I'm not whinging, I'm not envious, I'm not really bothered. I'm telling you how I saw it and I may get trashed or whatever but I won't whine about it.

    • Oh now come ON! Shorely you can come up with a better example than THAT! Joseph Robinson couldn't work his dadgum way out of an outhouse without trailing hiney-wipe paper on his shoe!!!

    • LOL

You have said a lot here, and yet you have said nothing much at all.

So that I am not confused about things, let me ask specifically the point of your post...

You are saying that he posts too often, and thus, he is probably spamming his signature all over the forum?

    • Oh my goodness, Alistair. The truism I quoted was not directly pointed toward you as I had no clue who Wolf was referring to until later when you showed up in the thread. I meant you no disrespect.

Actually, I was directing my post to whiners in general as whiners are a pet peeve of mine.

I actually like to post this in response to whiners...

but went with the adage instead as it seemed to be a better fit in this particular situation.

Sorry if you think I posted that directly at you.

    • So, from what I'm reading here, the part that bothers you about his signature is that it relates to the topic he posted about? By that argument, everyone here should get rid of their signatures. In a perfect world, the fact that he feels he is knowledgeable enough about the topic to include his related service in his signature would lead to more credibility, not less.

To address your side though: you have a point as well. I've been looking back through wolf's post history to find the thread where this went down, and I think that you didn't need to handle it the way that you did. Either report the individual posts that look spammy, or give them a profile infraction that warns them against the behavior you are seeing. Mods see those too (at least the red cards I believe), and you can directly alert/confront the offendor in a place other than a public thread.

I can see where you are seeing wolf as repetitive, and if the sig is a new one that is meant to pimp what he is saying in posts I understand your anger. I can't directly back you though, because I myself have given writing/article syndication advice in a ton of threads while displaying a signature advertising syndicated writing services. Don't want to be a hypocrite .

  • I can't say that ALL of my replies have been contributive in a meaningful way....I mean, sometimes it's just telling someone "thanks for the info!" if the share was good.

But out of the almost 200 posts in only a month I've made, I think the majority of them have been a decent contribution, even if several were merely comical.

Sigs are an incentive to post as others have pointed out already, and I think most of us feel we have something decent to offer via our sigs, so I really don't care who complains about it, the exception being the admins of course.
  • Seriously man!! Just ignore those whinners. Ignorance is the main aspect of being successful. Signature is vital. They gives us targeted traffic to our website. Honestly, I have noticed that people who have signatures have more quality post than those who does not have.
