Name & Email In Opt In Form??

Hey everyone. Quick question wanted to know your opinion on.

For anyone who is building there list here, have you noticed a higher opt in conversion from removing the option of having the prospect fill in their FIRST NAME field.

I've seen many opt in forms that just require an EMAIL field.

I've personally always used the FIRST NAME and EMAIL since I felt I could personalize the email messages for them but would be interesting to know if the email by itself with increase opt ins!

    I've found that I get a bump of around 15% in my
    visitor-to-subscriber opt-in rate by asking for the
    e-mail only.

    However, track your own results all the way through
    your sales process to get an idea of how it affects
    end sales.

    I've not noticed a big difference in end sales but
    your mileage may vary so conduct your own tests
    to be sure for your lists.

    However, I do get the name and e-mail address for
    the more important buyer lists as these details are
    sent automatically via the shopping cart.

      Hey I agree about the testing part of it. I've been noticing many people "big dog" marketers just asking for the email which is why I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

    Many these days, simply just ask for the email address and their conversions are good. People did use the name part to build a relationship, the problem is that many will simply fill in a name that is fake.

    When you personalize your AR messages , it will mention the prospects by their fake name (if used) and that does not build much of a relationship.

    Testing things is always best....

    You will always get better sign up conversion with email only.

    You still get fake email addresses being used (double opt-in can counter that, but does reduce some genuine sign-ups too) - but you will pick up people who don't want to use the name.

    In addition, as has been mentioned, personalisation is no longer what it used to be. People know that it is an auto-responder - so it does not have the same psychological boost it once had. Also, if they entered 'asfgblgdbsa' as a name - this undermines your whole message when used in an email follow up.

    Be careful too: Some people will put your own name or offer in the 'name field' so that they can track when they signed up.

    Better to ditch it altogether in my experience.

      It would be kinda weird to send an email to someone and they see that as their name, which is what they field out the field with.

      Anyway, makes sense. Not sure if personalization is the same as what it use to be.

    Yes - consistently.

    I used to ask for "name" and "email" but for about the last 3 years now, I've been asking for email address only, on all of my list opt-in pages.

    I changed this for all my (then) niches at the same time, I think in late 2009 or maybe early 2010, and my sign-ups increased by 12-15% across the board.

    I decided (purely in response to subscriber feedback) that it was a mistake for me to use subscribers' names in the autoresponder emails I sent out, and once I'd decided that, there was no point in asking for it.     Omar,

    The first thing I want to mention is that your sales conversions will probably not go up since you are asking for a name. There are a lot of internet marketers "currently" that only ask for people's emails and still do really well with their internet business.

    I am pretty sure that your opt in rate will be slightly higher then normal if you are just asking for their email.

    Test both ways and see what are the differences.

    I would just rather have one field to type in, and not even that, just have Firefox populate my email address already. I have even to have to hit tab once for name and email, just send me the info. I'm so lazy

    On a broader scale the less information you ask for
    when generating leads the more opt-ins you'll get.

    It has to do with a privacy issue. More people
    feel comfortable giving you their information if
    you cannot readily identify them. The same reason
    why people would say things on a forum that they
    would never say face to face.
