Allen Says is the owner. I doubt that recently joined members would be invited to moderate. Just a guess.

Hang around for 5 years or more, participate in a productive way, and show the balance and common sense needed to know the difference between "I don't like this" and "This is against the rules."

Plus, be a masochistic bastich, with delusions of modhood.

Hey. That was uncalled for! There's no need for the J-word.

To paraphrase something a wise man said to me yesterday... "Moderating is easy - until you have the delete button."

My bad! You are so right.

          I'm too one-sided to be a moderator.

And you're aware of it. Which makes it a non-issue.

We need a lot more of you than we do moderators. In fact, if there were a lot more of you, we'd need fewer moderators.

      Paul,

I've just gotta know...how many hours a day do you spend doing this?

I have never been here when you weren't.

Your back has to be killing you from sitting in that chair so long.

I have been wondering this for a while now...no pressure...

Walt Disney names them. The current moderators are Sneezy, Dopey, Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Grumpier, Grumpier Than Hell, Masochistic, Bastich, and Ban-Happy.

Some new moderators are not happy about having to change their names, but it goes with the territory.

I've ran a few forums over the years. And I hate moderating them. I got rid of all but one. Figured one was enough to moderate. What with all the Viagra spam. lol

Thank you to whoever invented mass delete on the forum. I had like 8 pages full of Viagra spam to delete all in one category all from the same spammer.

I don't know what I would've done without mass delete. All that clicking to remove that spam. I was able to click just a few times instead of 1,000's of times and the threads were deleted.

My hat's off to anyone who takes a moderating job.

Especially if they are just volunteering.

The selection process is quite secretive but word slipped out that most people don't get through the initial training.

The ones that survive (and are still crazy enough to want to do it) are apparently still subject to the all seeing eye of Allen on his bayou "campus" where each potential moderator goes through a grueling training schedule that consists of repeatedly and alternatively hitting the delete key and the ban key in the Warrior Forum Simulator room. There a barrage of spam and other nonsensical posts flash briefly on the computer screen and an instant decision has to be made as to which button is appropriate. A score of 5674 is required (5674 is the number of spam posts that come in on a weekly basis) to pass muster. Those that don't make it through get to "play catch" with Allen's hounds. You ever wonder where all those good posters disappeared off to?

In your case though it's clear that you don't have enough Midi-chlorians to even be considered.

    Good luck.

The moderators are a group of togaed individuals who live high atop Mount Olympus. Never, never upset them or the mighty curses shall rain down upon thee! And it also is wise to give offerings and blessings in their mighty name. Oh praises on high, oh praises on high.

      Ooops...

Here, folks, are two good (and thoroughly harmless) examples of why you should not repeat things you hear on forums (or anywhere else online) without checking them.
      Walt Disney names them.
Allen finally got the psioni-cryo linkup fixed? Why was I not informed of this? I'd have dug out the '77.'

I hate being a mod because of the controversy it causes. Like I delete a post that is obvious spam. For example, a ost on the wonders of - see alice and rorex reprica. Then members will yell at me. Yeah, accuse me of being a censor. It is so over rated to be one.

Asking for moderator powers is usually the fastest way to be forever denied them.

Unless a forum is brand new you will generally have to wait between 2-4 years and with a forum of this size often making you prove yourself for 6+

I was a moderator on a forum, took me 2 1/2 years, by way of newbie, full member, distinguished member...

Thats the key, getting people to recognise you for the good works you do and not just asking for it.

Even if you never make it, doesn't mean you cannot be productive and useful.

I never got that, even if I gave someone a formal warn they would not cause an issue, probably because I was fair and explained my actions rather than just closed threads and deleted posts seemingly at random :p

Thank you. Nice to see someone "get" that.

It's not a universal truth, as you noted, but it's definitely a tendency. Most people who have an active desire to have moderator access also have a personal agenda. That can be good, but it usually isn't.

If the agenda is clear and open, and made known to the forum owner, that's a good thing. You can almost always tell if they're being up front by their posting history.

It is always the way on the forum I was a mod (retired for now) for, basically to be considered for distinguished member (which was trainee mod) you had generally to be there for 6 months and they would only nominate who they felt could handle it, maybe 10-12 at a time, from these only maybe 1-2 would be promoted every month or two...took me 18 months to finally get my distinguished tag and I didn't even know I was in the running until an admin offered it me. (though I had been nominated a few times previously I had been "pipped" to the post)

Always been the same at that forum, you can ask sure..but it will pretty much always harm your chances.

I have been a moderator in numerous non-im related forums and I currently moderate in an IM forum that is nowhere near this size. I know what it takes to do it in that forum. There is NO WAY IN HELL that I would do it here.
I have great respect for those who do have that unenviable role and I commend everyone who does it.

I also think it is great that you guys task every member with being a moderator and complaining if there are posts breaking rules. It helps to make your job a tad easier.
