How Do Content Aggregator Sites Make Money?

The only viable business model is to earn money through advertising.

I've seen plenty of these sort of sites using Adsense but I'm sure that this is against the TOS.

So while I'm guessing that the bigger sites out there have struck a deal with Google to allow Adsense to be displayed on their sites, are smaller sites playing with fire by displaying Adsense?

From what I've seen, other ad networks don't come anywhere near to being as profitable for publishers as Adsense is. So what is the point of these sites from a monetization point of view?

Just to be clear, I'm talking about site likes The Drudge Report, which simply posts a link to an article and changes the headline, and not something like The Huffington Post.

The AdSense TOS does not change according to traffic levels.

AdSense is pretty much the training wheels of ad networks. They'll let just about anyone in unless your site is awful. Something like TribalFusion requires that your site get 500,000 uniques per month.

Adsense is a reputable and the most commonly used online advertising network. Whether your site is big or small, as long as it follows the standards and rules of Google adsense terms, you can use Google adsense to monetize your site or blog. It is run by Google Inc., so you have nothing to worry about getting compromised with your monetization.
In Q1 2011, Google earned US $2.43 billion ($9.71 billion annualized), or 28% of total revenue, through Google AdSense. This is basically the reason why other ad networking sites have been developed.

I was doing a search for the answer to this question as well. - I was considering creating an aggregation site too. But, I want to know the right way to go about it.

Maybe this thread will get more responses, so that I can get a clearer idea of how these business models monetize.
