Difference Between Featured Image & Ordinary Upload?

Can someone please explain the difference/advantages/disadvantages of using the Set as Featured Image option (low on right hand side of WordPress Edit screen), and the ordinary Upload Image from the icon at top left, just above the WordPress Editing window?

    it totally depends on the theme you are using, in many themes featured image are used as thumbnail to that post in category or home page, while simple image upload is a part of a post.

    Featured image is just a special attachment. Your theme can use it in any way the developer finds suitable (mostly as thumbnails to posts). You can only have 1 featured image per post, but an unlimited number of attachments.

    Also, if you insert an image to the post, it will show up in the post content, but a featured image does not necessarily get displayed.
