List Builders: Why you need to promote more and why January was my best month yet

With the start of February upon us, I'm proud to say that January has been my best month so far in earnings in comparison to all of my previous months because I decided to change a few things.

My previous autoresponder series went something like this:

Day 0: Thank you and Free Gift
Day 2: Advice/Freebie
Day 4: Advice/Freebie
Day 6: Offer
Day 8: Advice/Freebie
Day 10: Advice/Freebie
Day 12: Offer

...and so on with almost one year of messages going out.

For most of 2012, this model has worked for me and I've been able to make a living off it. BUT, I noticed something in my reports:

ALL of my offer emails would get the most opens and clicks and all of my advice/freebie emails would get even less opens/clicks than half of my offer emails.

At the beginning of January, I set up another list and changed it to this:

Day 0: Thank you and Free Gift
Day 2: Product Overview/Advice/Offer/Freebie
Day 4: Product Overview/Advice/Offer/
Day 6: Product Overview/Advice/Offer/
Day 8: Product Overview/Advice/Offer//Freebie
Day 10: Product Overview/Advice/Offer/
Day 12: Product Overview/Advice/Offer/

Because I started selling in every email, along with giving a product overview of what I was selling, some small advice, and sometimes a freebie, my open and click rates shot up DRAMATICALLY and I've made more sales in January 2013 than most months in 2012.

The trick was to COMBINE the advice/freebie/offer method, along with adding a product overview of what I was selling, making EVERY email full of value.

Here's some incredibly useful advice:

- Your subscribers don't want to wait to get their fix. If you've been getting good and targeted traffic, then you'll have plenty of buyers with large wallets who are willing to spend money. Remember, to them, YOU'RE the guru who knows which products work the best. You need to condition your list at the very beginning on what to expect from you. If you give out too many freebies and wait too long to sell, you'll only build a list of freebie seekers. If you give out great advice on which products work, then you can build a list of BUYERS.

- I've started reducing the amount of freebies I give out and have replaced them with actual advice and tips within the email along with my offer. Most of your subscribers probably have thousands of gigs of ebooks lying around and they're sick of getting another one that they won't read. If you want to give out a freebie, make sure it compliments the offer.

- The trick to promoting in every email is not to hard sell, but give a product overview, personal advice on how you would use the product, the benefits, and then a link to the offer.

The short "omg! this product made me $1921092010.12 in 2 days - CLICK HERE" method can be easily sniffed from a mile away. By writing longer and more detailed emails giving value, you will taken much more seriously as an authority and not as a spammy salesman.

I've started writing much longer emails that promote, educate, and sell rather than 2 overhyped sentences that lead to a sales page. I know alot of people think that subscribers don't want to read longer emails, but my click rates have shot through the roof by writing longer emails and showing that I was an authority on the subject.

The product sales page alone only has one chance of turning a visitor into a buyer. By establishing yourself as an authority, your chances of getting a visitor to read over the salespage and make a purchase increases exponentially.

- Promote in your signature at the end of your email. This is a HIGHLY missed opportunity to promote more products that your subscribers may have passed on! Also make use of writing P.S. messages at the end too!

- ALWAYS answer any email you get from your list. They want to know that a real person is behind the computer and not some kind of bot. I've had several repeat customers because I took the time to talk to them.

As for intervals on when to send emails out, it's up to you. I personally send my messages out every 2 days, but some people here have had success doing it every day or once a week. You need to experiment on what works best for you. Run your list like you're a member of it yourself.

Also, as for single or double opt-in, I'm single opt-in right now.

I hope this clears up any doubts people have of "selling too much". Give value first and then sell.

Best of luck to everyone this year!

- Ryan

Your are absolutely right, it's a goldmine..

about building a list and a long term business plan..

Thanks OP for this awesome thread.

Great post. Especially the point about educating your readers.

You see many plans by "newbies" like "I'm going to have a six part series giving away a free ebook with each part to really build my reputation and get my list to like me".

The response from more experienced marketers is "You are training your list to expect freebies".

People who opt-in to a form expect to be marketed to. Especially in IM.

But you need to balance that marketing with engaging and training your list.

You gave great tips for doing just that.

Most of the people who complain about attention spans and people refusing to read longer emails are sending bad/boring emails.

Send people what they want to read, and they'll read until their eyes cross.

There's a place for short emails, but if you have more exclamation points than vowels, something's wrong...

Ryan, I can't thank you enough for this amazing post.

I've been doing (trying!) IM for about 4 months.

I have a list of a bit over 300 subs. Most of them are cold though. I killed it at the beginning by slamming them with everyday emails promoting every shiny object I saw.
Didn't care (actually didn't know better) about providing value.

I recently started to write my own emails instead of copy and paste products swipes.
I started as well to buy and try a product before promoting it.

But still no sales!...actually got 3! ($1 trial DCSX)

I started in IM with DCSX and I've been trying to sell the program ever since.
I've tried selling it so many different ways (tweaked my emails so many times)
        but it doesn't sale...barely.

I'm starting to understand how to target the people I want with my squeeze page as well.

So I'll start implementing all the info provided in your post and hope for the best.

        Thank again!

You made much more progress than I did my first 4 months!

Where are you getting your leads? I checked out DCSX and it's probably a bit too steep in price ($97 a month after the $1 trial) for people who don't know you too well yet. Maybe it's something you should promote a little later down the line, but if you've gotten 3 sales, then I would focus much more on traffic.

It's better to have 10 responsive buyers than 100 freebie seekers. If you've gotten 3 sales (which is much more than most marketers will ever make in 4 months), then you've done something right. All you have to do is rinse and repeat.

Targeting the right amount of people depends on the quality of traffic you get. If you're buying solo ads, ask the seller if the page will convert for their list before you buy from them.

The 31 part course is working great and actually has the least amount of unsubscribes. I don't do any selling in it aside from my signature in the emails. I set it up as a test to see if I could email every day and still provide value and it's been working so far. I might try another list where I do my current system of Product Overview/Advice/Offer every day if this continues to be successful.

Yes, that definitely works too. However, keep in mind that the more steps you have to give to your visitors to click on a sales page, the less chance you have for a sale. This is why I provide a link to my affiliate sales pages within the email itself.

Make sure your blog entries have your affiliate links and links to extra products on the sidebar as well!

I have been using solos for traffic.
My problem is that my squeeze page was too broad....$1 For Online Success

I'm not trying to get any leads here, just want to show you my page.

I think with this page, I was creating curiosity but was not targeting the right people.

I actually switched to this model a few days ago. The funny thing is if you ask marketers about promoting in every email and they say its a big no no and that you won't make but its funny when you actually do it and test it out and you make a ton more.

I'm still trying to master this "art" of writing emails. I just need to get my storytelling skills down

This is brilliant information. I switched to describing what I was promoting to my list as well. When I initially setup my follow up emails I was concerned and did not want to seem like I was over-selling to my list.

From some advice I got from my coach, I tweaked it a little to better results. Your post has been the ultimate vindication of the same. Now to create emails for a whole month....

Hey Ryan your post is insanely accurate and coincides with my experience as well.

But what people need to realize is you can't just do this and "fake it" like you know what you are talking about. Your subs will sniff you out. Don't be stupid about it.

That works too if you link it to a blog post you've written yourself.

If you don't want to keep the email too long, then an excerpt with a "click here to read the rest" is fine.

      Hi Ryan,

Awesome information. I wanted to ask you a few questions.

You mentioned that in your original series you had an almost a year of messages going out.

How many messages are you planning to send out in the new series of messages?

Either one of the series includes a lot of products. Especially the second series if you keep it up, it is about 150 offers per year. That is a heck of a lot of offers and reviews for you to conduct. You pretty well have to review a product every other day if you were going to keep that over a year.

In addition, unless they are evergreen products you would have to change your offers to keep up with the changes in the IM market. Wouldn't you?

I can see you doing that for a relatively short period of time.

Over a long period of time it sounds like a marathon. How do you keep up with that?

      Thanks,

Thanks! Glad you found the information useful!

My old sequence was mostly freebies/advice with offers thrown in every 3rd email, but my new sequence has been reduced down to 4-6 months with the Product Overview/Advice/Offer method. I've actually replaced quite a few cheaper products with more products that are more evergreen.

I'm always tweaking my series to adjust to the changes in IM and I only promote products that I've used personally that have helped me immensely.

Instead of promoting a different product on each AR message, look at creating AR sequences (3 or 5 or even 7 part AR message sequences) where you promote the same product each AR message. Inform/educate your subscriber and build up the product.

Also, in order to keep up with what each AR message contains, create an Excel spreadsheet with AR message number, message title, product that is promoted in the AR message, affiliate link used in the AR with tracking ID, etc.

That way if you need to remove a certain product from your AR message sequence, all you have to do is reference the Excel spreadsheet to know which messages are promoting which product then just login into your Autoresponder provider (Aweber, Getresponse, etc) and change out the messages.

My own experience has shown me that my lists in the IM niche are more accepting to receiving sales messages. So selling something in my daily emails hasn't really hurt my relationship in any major way. My non-IM niche lists have not responded nearly as well to recommending products in every email, even when I offer other free information.

The bottom-line for me has been going back to the longstanding advice... test...test...test. After, we don't want to leave money on the table nor start an unsubscribe stampede.

This is certainly an interesting perspective, I like the combination method very much and agree wholeheartedly about educating and giving value rather than a swift pitch. I think that, whichever way you market to your list, the key is in HOW you promote whatever it is that you're promoting, rather than whether or not it's a free or a paid product. Having said that, as a beginner I can't claim to have any real experience on the promotion side of things. But I am a subscriber to mailing lists of many different marketers and I know that so long as the info I'm being given in the mailing is of value, is genuine and isn't giving me the hard sell then I really don't mind what it is that's being offered, whether it's a free product, a paid product, free tips, pointing to a blog post or whatever. But when I get what is obviously a generic hard-sell affiliate e-mail promoting something that I doubt very much the sender has even used, let alone genuinely endorses, then it's a swift click on "unsubscribe" (ie the 2 sentence, outlandish claim type mails).

Ultimately I think that if you respect your list, are honest and genuine, always give value and don't treat your subscribers like idiots then they won't mind if you promote a sale. Just like any aspect of good business, look after your customers and they will be more likely to look after you

Great and very valuable post. Most people are interested in finding solutions to their problems. By focusing on selling, you will give these people the products that can help solve their problems and you'll be building a list of buyers. It's truely win win.

This is excellent information. I heard something similar - about promoting an offer right away somewhere else recently. It makes a lot of sense. Once you've done that then the list knows what to expect - and that's to be marketed to on a regular basis.

And adding useful information makes sense as well. I think I will print your post and keep it at hand.

    Thanks again.

Sorry, I won't be posting any of my actual emails here, but I can give a basic example.

Here's how I break it down by paragraphs:

      1. Introduction - Explaining a basic IM problem that people face.

      2. Lead up to the product features and benefits.

      3. Explain product benefits and how it will help my customer.

      4. Link to product.

      5. Signature where I promote other products.

My emails tend to be 5-7 short paragraphs in this format.

This format allows me to pre-sell with my own words and will hopefully let the sales page explain the rest.

It took me until the 2k mark personally.

Mostly because I was afraid to sell and gave out a ton of freebies at the beginning. If I had started selling and providing value from the beginning, I would have made money with 150 subs.

I won't give exact numbers, but ever since I changed to this model, my open and click rates have shot through the roof.

When you have buyer traffic coming in, sell to them. The problem with my old autoresponder sequence was that I was getting buyer traffic, but was offering them way too many free things which killed my open and click rates.

Great info - I should post it on my wall, too!

Yup, been making that much for a while, but now it's doubled when I changed to my new model.

I also clean out inactive subscribers every month so they don't decrease that value.

The majority of products I promote are ones that I've purchased in the past and quite a lot of them were found on accident/random browsing/my shiny object syndrome problems/lists I'm on.

One of the best recommendations I can give is if you're subscribed to a few lists, then look what they're promoting and see if that product has an affiliate program on clickbank, JVZoo, Warriorplus, or it's own built in one.

After that, either purchase the product yourself or ask for a review copy (Most won't give review copies, but I've gotten really lucky in the past) and write out your own overview on it.

WSO of the day products tend to sell really well.

When I hit the 2K mark, I was starting to see sales almost every day.

Now I'm seeing sales every day in both big and small amounts. My highest day so far was around $1700+. My average is $200-$300 with unexpected bursts of $1000+ on some days.

My list is nearing 5 figures, but I always constantly clean out the inactive subscribers. I expect to go over 5 figures later this month.

Once you have a solid sales funnel, make sure you constantly blast it with targeted traffic and you'll get results like mine in no time.

          Glad you found it useful!

I'm in 3 niches (Internet Marketing, Video Games, and Film) and all of this is internet marketing since I make the most money from it.

I have about 7 different squeeze pages (all with their own lists) and I advertise my 3 newest ones in my sig to see how they convert.

I've applied this method to about 5 of my lists and I still leave my original one (The Advice/Freebie/Offer) intact since it's still making me money and another is a 31 part List Management Course (in sig) that goes out everyday and is double opt in only.

I realize that the less things I advertise in my sig, the more hits they get, so 3 links works for me.

Not as many sales as my other lists, but the open rates are pretty good, so I know my subscribers are reading it.

Hey Ryan what kind of budget did you start with in buildimg your list? How long did it take to hit that 2k? What do you recommend someone with a small budget go about getting there?
When I started, I had a 9-5 job, so I was able to blow about $300+ a week on solo ads. Hitting 2K only took about less than 2 months.

My budget's now in the 4 digits for solo ads and the rest is leftover for my mortgage, bills, food, etc.

After your initial free gift, a good way to find out who will be potential buyers is to offer a cheap $10 product in the next email. Even if your subscribers don't buy at first, you'll get a good idea from the open and click rates depending on your subject line and email itself.

I send regular broadcasts to people who are done with my follow ups and delete the non responsive ones.

I did that before and while I got decent conversions, subscribers in the IM niche tend to be more "jack of all trades" and want more options and methods. If you lost a subscriber with one offer, you'll probably have another one more appealing to them later.

Although with something as high priced as DCSX, it may take some convincing for them to spend $97 a month.

This was a very timely post I was just setting up an AutoResponder sequence and was wondering the exact same thing whether to promote and give advice or freebies at the same time.

This was the decision that I also came to so I'm really glad that its working out gang busters for you.

    I love this thread.

I agree with the jack of all trades mentality. Which is a big part of NOT seeing any success online. But hey if they want to try everything under the sun you may as well offer it to them and get paid. It should be of value of course. Whether they choose to act on one of the products you promote to them and run with it, or simply get like Frank Kern called it, this crack cocaine high from buying another shiny object, not your problem.

Of course if you choose to make it your problem and get them into some kind of ecourse teaching them one aspect then that works too.

Its all a matter of targeting I guess.

    Ryan,

Bloody awesome information! Really helpful and informative post!

I should imagine that this will really help a lot of people who are very set in their ways with regard to e-mail marketing.

This is excellent with highly segmented lists!

Hey man how many people are on your 31 part email course and how have your sales been with that list?

No doubt if you can make more with a smaller list its seems like a better focus doesn't it?

How often do you broadcast out to those on your list that have been through your follow ups?

Also do you feel a blog necessary? Some swear by it to build preeminence and proof as an expert.

I don't send solos to it and all of my advertising is done in my sig.

I have a little over 100 people and have made a few sales from it. It's good supplemental income.

That's a good strategy to promote a cheap product early on to seek out the buyers.

        The 31-part email thing rocks.

Acutally this whole thread rocks - I'm bookmarking it!

        Good stuff!!

Thanks for sharing your formula and your results.

Just curious if you've ever tried emailing on a daily basis, and what your results were from that?

Am I the only one that caught this? If you have already made sales with a list of 100 that is awesome!

How many subs did you have before you saw a sale?

I am in the process of putting together a more super targeted squeeze and follow up sequence like this.

Being super targeted both on your squeeze and follow up is critical I am seeing that more and more.

I only do the broadcasts once a week. My broadcasts are usually to advertise my other sales funnels and some other products.

I would definitely recommend a blog and posting your affiliate links to promote products.

I haven't done that with my main sales funnels, but my 31 part email course in my sig goes out every day and is double opt-in only. It seems to be performing well.
