What's the best way to format Ebook images for Kindle device viewing?

What's the best way to format Ebook images that will be
viewed on the Amazon Kindle? Does the shape and size of
the photo matter? What type of image file should I use?
.bmp? .jpg? .png? Other?

Also, I was hoping to put some screenshots from my web
browser into the book. Do you think these color images
will still be viewable to those who are reading on the Amazon
Kindle?

Color images will show in color on the Kindle Fire, and the Kindle apps for different devices. They will show up in black and white on the basic Kindle reader devices.

The best way to optimize images for the Kindle is to create.jpg files. In terms of the size, you want to make sure that the image isn't so large that it gets cut off on the smaller Kindle devices because if it does, it will ruin all of your formatting.

You also want to make sure and have smaller image file sizes (while still retaining image quality)

I've got a blog post and video on re-sizing Kindle images if you need it.

The above info is for images within your Kindle book. For Kindle Book Covers, you'll also want a jpg file but the optimum best size for the cover is 1563x2500 and it gets uploaded to Amazon directly during the publishing process and not included in your book file.
