Ebay vs Amazon, Which is Better?

I mainly use Ebay for many reasons, but I thought it would be a good question to ask in this forum. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on both sides and would like to see what is better.

I would like your opinion on which business would be more convenient to run a business.

Better in what way - buying, selling or overall? I'd say that it's largely like the whole comparing apples and oranges scenario. They're both good in their different ways and it depends on what you're looking to get out of them

Bit of a broad question - perhaps be a bit specific. These two sites have different purposes...

eBay to me is a better place to buy and sell, as I have always have better luck with eBay over Amazon, but from a selling point of view using both is best, but if you could only pick one, then eBay all the way.

      All the best,

      Martin

Ebay is better. Amazon will ban you and keep all your money for nothing. Ebay has known to do this to some outstanding powersellers, but it's not at the rate at which Amazon will drop you.

I agree, that is a big reason why I am not in amazon is because they hold your money or take a chunk of it after you get your payout. Ebay pays instantly in my paypal account with no problems.

  • EBay helped me become financially independent and debt-free. Amazon? Not so much. No control over conversion rates, brand funneling, packaging, etc. Ebay is far superior.

I personally like eBay. I recently bout a lot of sun glasses and sold a few on Ebay. To get a bit more exposure, I decided to sell them on Amazon. They wanted some special number that I didnt know anything about. I ended up saying screw it...

My buddy is addicted to Amazon's prime membership because they ship stuff but if you want stuff faster and don't mind paying extra, just go to the store and get it.

That's why I like ebay. Easier to buy and sell. Only flaw with ebay is they have so many fees now... LOL

    EBAY > Amazon

I prefer Amazon, as it permits non Paypal options for receiving payment that are more suitable for some marketers, and is less buyer-biased in transaction disputes. The fast money aspect of eBay makes you feel better, until the disputes happen, whereas they are almost non-existent with Amazon.

In addition, Paypal is facing pressure from Visa/MC as the cards are increasing their fees on processors, which will end up being felt by sellers in the form of higher fees:

As a shopper I always go to ebay 1st. Sometimes I check out Amazon and have bought from there but not anywhere near as much as Ebay. I like the way ebay is layed out and you can track progress of orders easily with myebay.

So therefore I personally would be looking to sell on ebay as I would feel more comfortable there

Amazon is by far the superior way to build a business. Ebay will give you some low level scrappers that will nip at your heels and try to drive down your prices. The upside of Amazon is that, for the most part, you are dealing with people that have paid (via monthly fee) to list products on Amazon. That immediately eliminates a bunch of people.

The big upside with Amazon is being able to stock products in the warehouse and have them eligible for Prime/Free shipping. You can find everything on Amazon, but there are a lot of niches that are underserved when it comes to stocked products in the warehouse.

I had a friend that has had an e-commerce site for a number of years and got hit by Penguin/Panda and was a little discouraged. We talked about some strategies beyond what he’s been doing, but as a “bootstrapping” plan, I told him to stock products at Amazon. He took his top 10 products, got rid of the big/expensive ones, and focused on the rest. The average gross margin on these products would be 25-50% after Amazon fees. On a $10 or $20 product, it’s not much money per sale. But most of these products will sell 10-15 units per month, so you’re talking a nice stream of income. Once you find a rotation of 15-20 products in a niche, you’re kind of off to the races.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. Each site has its own benefits and drawbacks.
Why does one have to be better? I see threads all the time in here asking which is better and giving choices. Why not accept the different possibilities and use them when needed?

I like both online marketplace Amazon and eBay, but i prefer ebay because, eBay feedback is more reliable, it's offering a much better deal, eBay offers much more of an opportunity to brand your store and listings.
