PayPal - First Problem in 3 Years

Hi Warriors,

About 2 hours ago, someone just stole $170 out of my PayPal account without me authorizing it. Of course I am still shocked because this had never happened to me. I have no idea why they/he/she only took $170 when I have more money in there.

So PayPal place a limitation on my account which is bad for someone like me who have lots of transactions everyday. This means that I can send or request money as well as withdraw money.

Have this ever happen to you?

P.S. I don't what I'm feeling now. I changed my password and secret questions but right now I am started to lose trust with PayPal.

Jeez, that sucks. Had my account more than 8 years now. Haven't had a problem *knock-on-wood*. Even during the time when people's accounts were being frozen left and right. Didn't see that happen. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I know it's tough. Just hang in there, bro. You'll be alright. I'm sure they'll be able to get your money back.

I guess it's not the $170 that has been bothering. It's just security issue. Because I am very sure that no one will know my password because it has mixtures of caps and numbers and alphabets and it DOES NOT relate to me at all.

I'm just feeling that PayPal is getting insecure and I feel like loading out all my money in PayPal.

Have you considered spyware, trojans, viruses or other phishing schemes picking up on your login information? I don't think PayPal is to blame if someone has your password. That's out of their power. Services like PP grant access to people who have the correct email and password. There's no other identity to verify. If someone else has your password, that's not their fault.

To me, if this happened and I get my money back, I would be happy to know that PayPal is there to make things right. I think you have nothing to worry about with PayPal, it's where you go to log into your financial accounts that matters.

I've actually seen a few threads about this sort of thing, so I got the paypal security key. It's kind of a pain, but not to bad if you keep it handy to your computer. Might be more problematic for people who are more mobile with their laptops, but worth the trouble, I think.

Having said that, I am starting to believe that paypal isn't really that great of a way to accept or send money. Not just because people can reach in and steal money from you but because of the way they can lock down your account virtually putting you out of business. That's the real scary part to me.

Sorry that happened to you desmondblog.

I really like Paypal and have never had any problems at all with them.

That said, depending on your circumstances this may not be feasible or even practical for everyone but I do a daily sweep of my Paypal account where I basically take it to zero. Moving the money to MY BANK account. I know it's not a perfect solution but it does solve the problem of the sometimes seemingly 'random' freezing and having your money become un-accessible.

Anyway, hope things workout in your favor brother.

    Desmond,

Have you checked to make sure you don't have one of those "stealth" subscriptions from a previous purchase?

You may be a victim of keyloggers or similar...

However I'm a bit curious as to how the money was stolen...

Was it used to make a purchase? or was it withdrawn to a bank account or paid into a paypal account?

    Sorry to hear about this

I suggest that you contact Paypal and let them know about this as soon as possible.

Paypal Hmm, Ive had alot of bad experience with them. I know many on this forum use Paypal and have got nothing other then praises for them. I know accepting paypal increases sales as many customers use and trust them.

With my own experience I can say that Paypal are no good if you are selling high priced items or even if you bring in alot of money through your paypal account on a daily bases. A few times I got limited for withdrawing £600 at a time. I mean whats that all about?

IMHO any serious seller will need to get a proper merchant account. By all means offer paypal as a method of payment but dont let it be your only method of payment. If you get limited then your how will you accept payments.

Just to educate yourself a little i would recommend you do a little search for Paypal hell and read through the horror stories many have experienced. However what I can say is that if you sell high priced goods then you are a high risk in their eyes.

Just be careful and be prepared for the unexpected

I've heard of problems with PayPal in the past, but not where money has gone missing. I think Calvin may have hit the nail on the head with those annoying "stealth" subscriptions. I've fallen foul of those a few times.

PayPal actually emailed to inform me that there may be unauthorized money sent to another account and asked me to change password and security questions which I did.

Looks like I'm out of business (until my PayPal limit is lifted). I have to wait for the hacker/payment receiver to respond to this in Resolution Center.

That's a horrible thing to experience, Desmond.

When I've had accounts hacked in the past my first reaction has always been to blame the service provider, but in each case the password had been obtained through a hack into one of my email accounts.

I hope you get to the bottom of this. I've gone through my "PayPal s#cks" phases over the years, but overall it only makes sense for them to provide the highest level of customer service possible.

I'm subscribing to this thread. Please report back on your findings.

    Good Luck, Jon

No problem. I haven't gotten the money back. I rather not getting my money back in exchange for lifting the limit.

There... I just ordered my security key. I feel better already I also noticed a new service at least I've never noticed it before but I can have PayPal checkout right on my own website for a low monthly fee plus transaction fee. This will also allow me to take orders over the phone!

I got my marketing wheels turning... this could be a great thing to take advantage of!

Just go to PayPal, log into your account and look left. You will see a banner ad for it in your account. Click on the link and go order one. It costs $5 and it will take about 5 business days to get it (in North America at least)...

      Hi everyone,

PayPal has finally decided to refund the money over to my side. Of course the $170 isn't that much of a deal to me compared to the period when PayPal limited my PayPal account.

After listening to Mike Hill, I decided to purchase the security key...which PayPal said it's not available at the moment. =.="

This is my first time getting hacked -- and even a couple of my friends had their PayPal hacked in these few weeks too. So I urge all of you to take care of your PayPal funds and change the password occasionally unless you have the security key.

      Thanks for everyone's support.
