Name server update??

When you move hosts then update your name servers at your domain registrar, is the name severs update always done within 48 hrs or can it take longer?

Is there anyway to find out if the name sever update has complete?

I ask because I want to be sure I don't cancel too early with my old hosting provider.

    You can use http://intodns.com/yourdomain.com to check the DNS

    You can also use Global DNS Propagation Checker - What's My DNS? to check the propagation.

    Typically DNS takes 24-48 hours to fully propagate however, I've seen it short as a few hours and as long as 72 hours.

      On the Global DNS Propagation Checker, what are you supposed to select in the drop down box which says A, AAAA, CNAME, etc...

        You would type in your domain in the box, then select:

        A - A records
        NS - Nameservers
        CNAME - CNAME records
        MX - MX records (mail exchanger)

        so on and so forth for whichever record you wanted to check. In your case, you'd want to type your domain in the box, then select "NS" for the nameserver check.

    Why do you need to cancel anything? Just let the account expire at the end on the billing cycle.

      It's a good idea to actually "cancel" the plan. Simply abandoning the account doesn't constitute as a cancellation and should you ever decide to go back with the provider, you'd be responsible for the balance if they even consider re-activating the same account. Although unfortunately, the norm for this industry is to just disappear when you no longer want the account.

      I thought you had to cancel it. As once it reaches the next bill date, the hosting service will still be being used so I guess they'll bill me for that period.

        Yes, I meant cancel effective the day before the bill date, not based on the propagation of the nameserver change. I knew what I meant, just didn't state it clearly.
