Keyword domain vs. product domain name

I have recently gotten into affiliate marketing. I have found a product I want to promote and am trying to decide if I should buy a domain that is a broad keyword of the product or if I should buy a domain that has the product name in it? For example, if I am promoting a snoring product should I purchase snoringhelp.com or should I purchase a domain like www.productnamereviews.com, (where product name is the name of the product I'm trying to sell). Doesn't have to be reviews at the end of the domain but I'm just using that as an example. Anyone have any suggestions or experiences that could help me here? Thanks in advance.

I suggest the more general key phrase for two reasons:

    1. You could possibly get into trouble using the product name if it's trademarked.

    2. The product might go off the market. Then you would have a domain name for a non-existant product.

However, I know some people prefer to use www.productnamereviews.com for SEO purposes, and that makes sense, but I'd be careful with it, especially if you're reviewing products that might be trademarked.

I am leaning in that direction Denise and I appreciate your advice. The only problem I have with that is it seems like domains with the product name in them get ranked higher than the ones that don't. Hmmm, decisions decisions.

    The former, IMO.

If you want a "keywordish domain" (and I don't mean that pejoratively: I have many), let it be a niche keyword and not a product keyword.

One of the joys of affiliate marketing is that (unlike vendors) we can build up a real, asset-based business without being dependent on the continued success, availability and popularity of any specific, individual product at all. We have complete product flexibility. Why lose that advantage?

Most of the real money in affiliate marketing comes from making repeated sales to the same customers, anyway, and it's much, much easier to attract traffic to and build your lists from a niche-related site than it is with a product-related site.

Awesome info Alexa, thanks so much. So.... I guess when I start putting up my articles on my site my main issue will be how to funnel them to the product. Can I have a page that talks about the product and link to the product page from my informative articles? I would think that'd be the best way. I honestly would like to see an example site (if you know of any). That would help me greatly.

Absolutely, Honest reviews are better than tagging a domain after the product name.
I suggest you should personally try the product you're affiliating before your start, It gives you more confidence on promoting the product you're affiliating.

Targeting the product name is good for SEO but what I would recommend is that you contact the product owner first to make sure that its ok so you dont trump any trademark rules.

      Alex Mensah,

I believe #4 explains in detail pros and cons about this matter.
