Hostgator Server Migration Killed My Sites!

Hi all,

Has anyone got a server migration email from Hostgator lately?

They told me my sites were moving from one server to another. Now my Wordpress sites have pretty much been killed off and I'm losing $$$.

The issue seems to be a lack of connectivity to the MySQL database. Maybe the new server is worse than the old one, or maybe the migrations are too resource intensive. My phpBB forum is up more than my Wordpress sites. I know it's not a database user/server name issue.

I've emailed support but so far...:confused::confused::confused: nothing.

Should I be registering for Bluehost and moving my sites? Are they any better? Hostgator have been pretty good for me but this is abysmal .

Maybe just wait to see what support says, any host has to have problems once in a while. Maybe they can fix it up for you quickly. Don't they have a live chat to ask them about it?

Do you have backups of your DBs? If so you should be able to fix everything up easily eitehr way. Some hosts auto-backup your stuff if you don't have too much on your hosting. Not sure if Hostgator do this though.

Technically, google stated that they don`t just kill a website when it changes servers. this can happen for many reasons and they seem to undestand that. They also say that when a website is down they do offer it some days to come back before taking it down. Just keep doing what you did and I`m sure everything will get fixed.

      Hi Brett

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but all our WP sites went down Monday evening and it is going from bad to worse.

Gary has spent the last 3 days trying to get some straight answers out of Hostgator but it is taking up to half an hour to get a reply - and that's when he's actually speaking to someone! Seems Hostgator have more issues with this migration than they are letting on!!

I'm sure Gary will fill you in on the progress (lack of!)

      Same here Brett

My sites have been down for 4 days and still nothing.

Support (which used to be great) is useless now. There are HUGE security issues with hostgator.

Don't go to Bluehost...they are now the same company. Do a search and you will find a thread I started a few days ago and Kingfisher (I think that was his ID) has explained what is happening.

it is a mess. We are moving to Stormondemand, com instead.

We have losts sales, sleepless nights and just had a really frustrating 4 days

      Hope you get sorted

I have also got the same kind
        of mail of server migration.

But all my sites are working
        fine without any hassle.
And I did double check after
        reading this post too.

Everything is fine at my end.
        Hostgator never gets me
        into any kind of problem.

Please use the Live Chat wisely.

        Thanks

I'd suggest finding a new company that can work with you as soon as possible. We've been working on a few migrations and the servers are up & down up & down constantly. Honestly, the BlueHost servers everyone's being migrated to are hardly an upgrade.

Hey there... for what's it's worth I too received the email about a week ago and had my c-panel (where I have several of my own sites/domains & some client sites) migrated. They also put a redirect in place on all the sites... In my case I experienced no down time and everything is working as was, if not bit faster.

Mine was an issue of slow load times.

Moved my sites to a new host. They're split second fast again.

Leave Hostgator. It's not worth the frustration. They aren't paying you to be on the line waiting on with their customer service. So why are you paying them to have to be.

        Just save yourself the frustration...

Not alone. My server and my clients' servers have been migrated to the 'upgraded' servers. They are rubbish. They have SSD storage for the database servers. Not a good ad for SSD. All my sites run slow. Numerous chats with HG support have been no help at all. I'm moving to a new host. Not sure who yet but won't be part of the EIG Group.

I got the same email, but things seemed to migrate well. However, some files would not appear when uploaded via FTP so I had to have a couple of phone calls and live chats with HG. They were helpful as usual, however, the wait time was longer than normal (which I attribute to this migration!).

They should have your sites on backup? Make a support ticket and call on the phone I have not had any problems getting through in the past. But people have been complaining a lot about them lately.

I believe this is the first time, HG moves their customers from rent servers from SL to owned servers in Ace. So, they should have new servers ready before migrating. That's why I don't know why there are so many complains, even I know that migrating such a big numbers can give you headache.

I guess no one can help, just need to wait for their supporting team. If you want to move out, you still need to wait until your server is working in all services, so you can do full backup.

Sorry to hear that, but if you were happy with HG before, it might worth to wait some times.

most likely they are beginning their CPU Throttling like EIG does to several brands they buy (now that "bluehost is the standard")... hostmonster also took on the likings of these CPU Throttlings and has a spitting image of Bluehost's Cpanel now... it's inevitible that EIG will eventually combine all of its brands into, if not 1 brand, 1 "model" (bluehost)... these new "monster" 32-CPU machines they are moving everyone to in Utah (where bluehost is located) are alarmingly slow altho the "load" shows very small... hmmm

Hostgator royally screwed it up with their server migration. I'm reading of people complaining their sites were migrated to the same IP C class! Including 2 of mine which I was fast to simply move to another host and thus IP range. Mine used to be on two totally different A ranges and the day after they were migrated my sites were sharing all digits in their IPs except the last one which was only one number up.

Killed my IP diversity although those sites were not a big part of my portfolio and I moved fast enough so haven't noticed any changes. The guys at Hostgator are overloaded with waiting times of 30+ minutes on Live Chat and their Live Chat goes down a lot. Hostgator lost a lot after they were bought, they used to be the best IMO (used to).

Kudos to HG for sorting it out - not sure why it took so long. Turns out it was a PHP configuration issue.

The LiveChat guy confirmed there was a problem. If you have any other HG problems then head for LiveChat, not the email support.

Incidentally, if you have several sites then ALWAYS split them between hosting companies!

Same here, my site has never been so slow since the migration. It's driving me nuts, I called up the customer service and they can say is: 'you need to optimize your site, this and that'. But it's not the site's problem, it's hostgator's service. This is not acceptable, I am going to change hosting. Maybe hostgator? Anyone with authority site has suggestion?

I have been having some of the same issues since my migration several weeks ago. Often wordpress simply locks up when I try and execute some sort of command such as new post, edit post and so on. A lot times I think I have posted something and come back later to see a double post and if I delete one post the other one disappears too. Like you said just a lot problems and it seems they are in no hurry to fix them or even acknowledge they exist. I talked to support many times and just get the same BS story every time.

Now here is a quick refresher if you decide to move Host Gator, Blue Host, Ipage and Fat Cow are all owned by the same company so it is unlikely you will find any improvements moving to one of those. Try Site5 or Liquid Web if you want to get away.

Another Hostgator thread ... sigh ...

Hostgator was sold to EIG in 2012. The old Hostgator is gone. It's essentially been merged with Bluehost now, which also started to suck after EIG bought it out in 2011 (or was it 2010?). This is EIG's reputation right here -- botching forced server migrations.

I told people last year that this was going to happen. For those that didn't heed my advice -- or others like me, who know about hosting -- hopefully it's not too late. I know that some of you were blindsided, and had gotten no advice at all. Hopefully you won't lose everything (some do). Hopefully you have your own backups, and can move hosts.

For example, Site5 and Arvixe are excellent non-EIG hosts.
If you don't want "unlimited" anymore -- because it never really is -- try Stablehost or Veerotech.

Yahoo is even more terrible than Godaddy and EIG. It's so outdated. For example, did Yahoo move off PHP4 yet? If so, it's likely an outdated PHP5. That's a search engine, news aggregate, and email company -- not a host.

    @all:

Stop finding your hosts on fake "top web hosting" lists that only shows the hosts with high-paying affiliate commissions. That advice is horrible, and the people who own those sites don't care about you or your hosting. They just want money, not to direct you to good hosts. If the lists has Fatcow, Bluehost, Hostgator, JustHost, etc ... move along. Don't read it. It's useless BS.

Good luck folks. It gets better, if you have the right host.

Kudos to Site5 for not selling to EIG. I understand they were offered a decent sale price if they were to.

For the HG migration, I'm pretty sure that the migrations involve a migration to a more densely packed server using Heaton's BetterLinux. More accounts per server = better margins.

But then you know my thoughts on the whole situation from other forums we frequent

That's exactly what it is. If you follow BetterLinux, you know it's full of bugs. It's never going to be a serious CloudLinux competitor. It was just another thing to sell to EIG to cram more customers per box. (Even without EIG, Bluehost was guilty of this. That host sucks before the takeover.)

thanks, this was the thread I'd been looking for.

    what I'm doing is:
    a) I've got multiple accounts w/hostgator, so I temporarily move and re-dns via godaddy my most important current launch sites to an alternate hostgator account I have (one that's not being migrated yet)

    b) my biggest concern, and their support confirmed it today, is #1 problem is DNS redirects; eg you have to login to your registrar (in my case godaddy) and update nameservers; the challenge is the overlap time, eg from time hostgator tells you to update dns records/nameserver, how to manage that with minimal downtime, via updating nameserver records in godaddy/registrar, once you get a notice email about upcoming migration?

    c) I've just rebacked up/downloaded all my mysql databases to local hard drive, and am tonight downloading all my dozens of sites/videos as /root backup to my external drive, so I've got a clean "image" of what's on their server. And backing That up to blurays for good measure, in case hd fails. I already have backups, all on my main pc hds, but not server ghost image type selective backups, so I'm doing that tonight. Good idea for backing up sites anyways so you have a ghost image of what's on the server.

any tips on making this as painless as possible? hg rep said #1 issue was nameserver/dns related issues, customers not changing dns servers correctly so I want to stay on top of it.

there's a lot of complaint/problem threads on hgs forum relating to the migration:

    http://forums.hostgator.com/shared-h...upport-f7.html

update: but talking to another tech today, he said there were some issues earlier, yes, a month ago but they've fixed things now... so we'll see. btw i use siteuptime.com to monitor domain site uptime/downtime, recommend them (or similar uptime monitoring service) to stay on top of outages

Thanks for putting me on that site. In less than 5 minutes I was on another Hosting site with much better offers than HG. I was wondering why the service has deteriorated over the past year there.

I'll keep my dedicated boxes there for now, but start diversifying new dedicated servers elsewhere. I would have to anyways, because HG doesn't sell what I need to upscale anyways and I've been on this trail since January.

There are so many hosting companies to choose from, you don't have to stick to any of the more popular ones. Hostgator, et al, have gone downhill over the years. So switch hosts.

If you are running WordPress, I would advise you to look for a company that has Litespeed installed on their servers. It makes a huge difference in performance.

99% of the HostGator customers had absolutely no clue the company was being sold. The company did not notify any customers and half of them found out the hard way when being "upgraded" (yea, what a joke) to cover for a migration. Those same people have no clue who EIG is.

        Right from EIG's site:

We start every day by asking ourselves, how can we make the web a better place and deliver valuable services and solutions?
How's that for a slap in the face for pretty much every company they've acquired. More like a snake in the grass to me..

You should switch you hosting asap..

Sadly, HG got bought up. It is just not the same company. Frankly, I am an HG reseller, but I stopped recommending the company years ago. Well, they have gone from bad to worse. Yeah, this is what happens when you start cutting corners. Executives constantly talk about cutting costs and trimming expenses. Mostly, what gets crushed is customer service. Please call them up and tell them you will not renew. If they get enough calls they might try to improve. Right now I am wondering if I should renew next year. Unless they improve. Well, the answer is no.

I'm so ******* pisted off right now, hands on the table. I've been with HG for three years as a happy customer, but now I'm strongly considering moving to another host.

Ever since the server migrations my sites have been slow as syrup. And I've contacted their support about this, and the stupid idiots claim that I need to optimize my shit.

I mean, come on? Lying to your customers? It's obvious that the root of the problem is on their side as the sites worked just fine before the server migration.

Damn, EIG sure messed shit up.

Their evading shady scammy support makes me wanna destroy my keyboard.

IMO, stay away from this EIG infected company. Your better off with a free host to be honest, as my sites can take up to 30 seconds to load as we speak.

This shit have been costing me ALOT of revenue also...

R.I.P HG, The Good Die Young.

Hostgator migration update: Epic Win - faster pings and no downtime

Hg just finished my migration today, and I'm pleased to report ZERO downtime or impact, it all went smoothly. The only thing I needed to change was my IP login for my FTP client, to resolve to the new one. My old nameservers are the same so I didn't need to change it in godaddy at all, and no downtime.

FASTER: Before the migration, I opened a cmd.exe and ping (mysite.com) for several of my sites on the server, and screencapped it, to remember the ms ping times. I just did the same and the new server is significantly Faster than the old one, so that's a win. (eg 57ms pings on old one, 40ms pings on new one, type of results).

So I'm thrilled it all worked out well.

      Yeah, heard this before.
Wait until EIG finishes migrating everybody to the server, and filling it to the brim with new customers.
In other words, wait a few weeks.

Exactly what I was thinking. 57 vs 40ms isn't really going to make a difference...

Ping isn't even a test of speed. I wish novices would learn this.

And 57ms and 40ms are virtually the same. Such as small variation of 17ms could be anything from time of day to unused equipment not yet on full load. When the difference is 50ms vs 100+ ms, then we can talk. Even under 150ms isn't bad. It when you hit 200ms+ that something is a (A) wrong, or (B) on the other side of the planet via poor networked locations.

Again, ping is NOT a speed test.

            +1

All of our VOIP PBXes are hosted in the US. I've been on some shoddy hotel wifi connections across the world where latency has been 200ms and higher and quality has still been more than usable.

I'd be more interested in finding out how many sites per server, what resource limits are in place, if anything sneaky is being done on the server (I read recently WPEngine does a lot of cloaking to reduce load) and what kind of traffic shaping is being done upstream.

They did this to me 2 weeks ago. I'm now looking for another host. Same problem - sql was down for 38 hours.
