Here's what he had to say to me:

"Thank you for being in touch with us today. I have the information
regarding the new Gmail "tabs" format. The first message that is sent
(which is the confirmation message) will be marked as promotional.
Messages that are received there after would be considered inbox.
Please let us know if you have any further questions about your account"

  The the thinking behind single opt-in being better is because Aweber support have allegedly said that the confirmation email (which is the first one for double opt-in), will go in to the promotions tab.
  
  Basically, if you're sending out offers to your list or, even just relationship building emails, and they end up in the promotions tab, they will likely rarely get seen because most people will not see the content of the promotions tab as very important and will likely not bother looking there. If you're emails are not being seen, there's not much point in having a list!
  
  BTW, I'm not saying that there's not much point in having a list - In fact, I believe it's essential for any serious online marketer. We just have to find more ways to make sure our messages get seen. I also think we should have multiple ways of communication with our list - not just email.
