Getting calls from India about my websites and business

Hi to all the warriors:

I just wanted to let you all know that today, I received calls from India asking me about my business and websites. They claimed that they are representing a directory site and they want to update the information regarding the businesses that are listed in their directory site.

As far as my knowledge is concerned, I have never listed my business and has never submitted my websites to their directory. The domain names of the websites which they are claiming to be listed as websites are already expired and I never built any sites with those domains; and I have no intention to submit my websites in their directory.

They were asking me about my business and the name of the new websites.

I don't think it's profitable for any company to hire data entry and call center workers so that they can call every individual business owners and do the data entries manually and individually for free in order to update the directory.

It sounded very fishy to me and told them not to bother me again.

What do you think it could be? Do you think they are scamming people?

If any of you have had the same experiences please put it on this thread and also

  • Sounds fishy to me to. Did they say which company they represented, or just that it was a directory?

I think you're right not to share the information!

Almost every time I call a US company about customer service
my calls get routed to India, but I can't say that I was ever called
by an Indian company. Welcome to the global village!

India seems to specialize in SEO for some reason.

If I had to guess, I would say that they are trying to compile a list of US businesses to sell to other companies in India to try and call and offer services to.

For example, we are constantly contacted by companies from India attempting to sell leads, software development, website design, SEO, website development, project management, you name it.

Thank you all for your responses.

Now I truly believe that the act of calling and pretending to represent a directory was nothing but a scam. Probably they were trying to get my identity and credit card information.

I hope that no wf members get scammed by those predators of scams.

It looks as a scam. I would recommend you to stay from any outsourcing service with no solid portfolio with a ten feet bean pole. A lot of scams from India and you won't hear back from the person.

This seems not professional as a company calling & not giving an authorized name which they represent. So the possible reason is they are using information for scam purposes, to be used in some directory for their own selling of information to buyers of email lists.

How hard is it to get anyone's name and number on the internet.

How can it be scam when they are not trying to sell you anything or asking for your cc number.

    You need to relax

Its not a scam its an upsell. They update your info free and then they say, but only 1% of our traffic will find you, everyone is going to your competitor in our directory because they are a premium member. If you pay $xx dollars you can be in the premium category too and get 40% more visibility.

Have no clue whether it's a scam or not. Got the same, only in email and quickly hit the spam button. Could be building a list or could just want to fill up their empty directory site. Don't know really, but I wasn't interested.

It's a scam. Never volunteer information on the phone to anybody you don't know, even if they claim to know what is going on inside your computer. I had a heated conversation with an Indian guy who maintained that their system could tell that I had a major virus and he would fix it for me if I gave him certain info.
I told him to bugger off!

    It's a scam.

There wouldn't be any reason to blatantly lie about updating their directory site if you're not already on there.
As mentioned earlier, they probably got your WHOIS information, and further down the line they'd probably ask for payments or CC numbers.

Probably they are scamming... why would they be calling you from India (no offense to Indians here... you know what I mean).

ask them some questions and you'll see by the way they answer. Q's like:
Who are You and how did You find me?
Why would you like to give me / make me all this?
Please give me a number to call you back

I was getting those Microsoft scam calls for a while, I just told them I didn't have a computer and they would hang up every time.

Haven't had one of those calls for a while now.

Just tell them you don't even own a business, I suspect eventually they will remove your number from whatever database they are using, also use whoisguard or similar on your domains to reduce your exposure to the parasites.

Yes, there are some who try to sell stuff by pretending to be someone else. I would say its not necessarily a scam, but yes, its more about someone trying to sell you something. Yes there are scammers ofcourse who might tell you a loan of so and so amount has been approved and will ask you to deposit some amount initially. I had some Nigerian trying to tell me that he needs me to claim $ 100,000 . . . .then I had another African girl message me on Facebook saying that she had a story to tell, and would like to keep in touch with me...lol..I knew what was coming. If I get a call from some African party, I usually ignore them, if from an Indian call centre, I usually talk to them in an incoherent way, they get bugged and disconnect the phone...lol. But so many big companies have outsourced their work in India now, so it is not surprising. Infact even if I had some work that needed to be done and if I was on a budget, I'd get it from India. Saves my time and money, both. I like quality work, but if the same is being offered to me, much cheaper, why would I need an American or a Canadian. Its all about business.
