The best place for acquiring images legally!

Hi warriors,

I don't want to steal images and want my business to be above board in every way. I have a nutrition site so need a lot of food images and the only places I have found are really expensive, around$35-$50 per image.

Is that an average price to pay? If not please could you recommend where I can go to find a better deal.

Thanks so much!

  • I used to like iStockPhoto.com but once Getty Images purchased them, their rates skyrocketed up to about $75 per photo.

I use depositphotos.com a lot now. They don't have as much available as iStockPhoto, but for the price ($1 - $5 on average), they work well.
  • I use this site quite The Leading Source Of Free Stock Photos - stock.xchng. You can use most for free.
  • Thank you both - will check those out!
  • I use 123rf.com, they have a huge selection of images, icons, etc...there is nothing you can't find in there and its super cheap.

    • I agree with that. I used to use iStock photos but when they put their prices up I searched for a good alternative. 123rf was it. I use it all the time now.

  • I look at photodune.net for some images sometimes. If they don't have what I am looking for then I go to iStockphotos.com. Those are both legal ways to get photos

  • I've used iconarchive.com before. lots of great images.
  • The Leading Source Of Free Stock Photos - stock.xchng is the first place I look. They also have links to paid images similar to what you search for, which can be handy.
  • Finding free stock images can be a pain and Devid Farah provided a great list.

A month or so ago I purchased a product called Stock Image Machine that seems to be working for me to help the search and posting of my images.

I'm sure there are some other inexpensive products out there to help search the different repositories and organize them for you.
  • I use depositphotos.com the prices are good and they have a nice selection to choose from.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • I really like 123rf.com. Another good one is bigstockphoto.com, but there are lots of others.
At any rate you will pay far less than $35 per image.

  • Why do you want to pay money? Just go to Public Domain and you will find thousands of images there.
    All the best. Regards.

    • Mainly because that is illegal and it is called stealing :p

  • There are plenty of free images out there. But finding just the right one when you need it ain't easy. Time is money and it makes more sense to go to a well stocked image site and get what you need.

I use this one. Depositphotos: Royalty-Free Stock Photos, Illustrations & Vector Art
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Great sites you guys!

I will definitely dig into them.
  • A few good, free resources for this are:
    Morguefile.com free stock photos
The Leading Source Of Free Stock Photos - stock.xchng
Free stock photos - Rgbstock -Free stock images

There is also tons of images in the public domain that can be useful.

    Hope this helps!
  • I use www.freedigitalphotos.net for copyright free images.
  • You can find a surprisingly good amount of Creative Commons images on Flickr.

There's an argument that the 'less stocky' images are nowadays the more people can relate to them which makes such amateur image repositories a good source.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thank you all so very much for all the amazing resources. Have had a look at a few of your suggestions and so far they are waaaaay better priced than what I have come across before.

  • I use:

    Deposit Photos - From $0.72
    Fotalia – From $0.80
Big Stock Photos – From $Free

Big Stock has a free trial for 7 days - they let you download 5 great images a day and they state there is no obligation to stay on beyond the 7 days. Which means you could get 25-30 images for free if funds were tight.

  • 123rf.com works fine for me too.
  • Public domain images, creative commons licensed images and free stock images are the best for getting these pictures for free. There are tons of excellent resources out there such as sxc.hu, pixabay.com, publicdomainpictures.net, flickr.com etc.
  • Thanks DylanC, although this thread is a few months old.

After sifting through all the great recommendations I have settled on freedigitalphotos.net. I like the idea of having one go-to place for all my image needs

    • Hey I checked that site, looks good etc but when I clicked on an image I liked it asks for credit or subscription..where is the free part? I am confused
  • I have a friend that uses stockfreeimages.com that provide Free images with the right to republish them, and you can also think to use some designer to create proper image for you
  • Hi,

I really prefer this website when checking out any images.

The quality is really great. Most of the images are public domain image which is good for graphic designer.

    Here is the link :

    Free Images - Pixabay

  • I used sxc.hu/ have lots of free images.
  • Go the link at the end. All free, with the condition you provide a backlink to them. But no one checks, it's an honor system.

They have pages and pages of free images, but only for the smallest size image. Don't confuse the paid search bar with the free search bar, as they're close together. I've spent dozens of hours just trawling through the images (click "browse free images") to download stuff. The images are very high quality.

    Go here :- https://www.123rf.com/freeimages.php

    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • morguefile.com works really well just have to alter the images in some way before you use them.
  • Unsplash

Some fantastic high quality images, there aren't a huge deal of images on here but it may be of use to you!

I'm not affiliated to this site in any way, just think it's a great resource.

    Hope it helps,

    Alex
  • Don't forget the Creative Commons /commercial use setting for Flickr. Lots of great photos there. Flickr is great for abstract images too.
  • I tend to use Wikimedia Commons which has a lot of public (copyright free) images.

Or, as mentioned above, Fotolia.com is a great choice for reasonably priced photos.

    Cheers
