I am aware that Camtasia is one of the option for creating videos which is a costly tool. I would be thankful if you can give me other options for professional looking videos for one's product

    • I also use screencast-o-matic (pro version) and find it to be excellent value and easy to use. Would recommend it for its ease of use.
  • You could try camstudio (I think it's called). It's free. I tried it but had so many problems actually trying to make a video of any length I uninstalled it.

    I then tried screencast-o-matic.

Pretty decent. has a free version but I opted to go pro.

Don't know if it's a special deal but I got 3 years subscription for $29

EDIT: Damn. Mark Hess said it while I was typing.

    • Is the pro version of Screencast-o-matic comparable to the features that you get with Camtasia? I was going to get Camtasia but it's so friggin expensive! I've been looking for an alternative...

  • I am using fireshot addon available with Firefox Mozilla. it is very easy to use and convenient.

    • With jing you can record videos up to 5 minutes long with their free trial.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I second, Active Presenter. In my opinion it's the closest to Camtasia for functionality than any of the other free ones out there. I use Camtasia myself, but tried out Active Presenter for me email list and the quality of the videos where excellent. Of course, with any free programs you're going to have restrictions, but it's definitely the best free alternative out there in my opinion.

    • Based on some recommendations here, I downloaded Active Presenter. It seems easy to use.

My challenge is that when I ran a couple tests, the audio quality is poor. It cuts in and out. I'm using a ATR mic.

I didn't have any audio trouble when I was using EZVID, so I know the hardware is not an issue.

      Any ideas? Thanks.
  • Camstudio has been upgraded over the last year and is well worth a shot!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I dont think you can beat Camtasia :-)
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Depends on your goals. Contrary to popular belief, there are screen capture programs out there that have far more features / functionality than Camtasia. Adobe Captivate is the first one that comes to mind.

But Camtasia works great for most screen recording jobs. And it's a heck of a lot less expensive than Captivate!

As far as "free" screen capture programs are concerned... I'll "third" the recommendation for Active Presenter. It beats the snot out of all the other free options, IMO.
      • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • What's your budget and requirements? If you just need to capture some tutorial videos, game videos with basic video editing features, Smartpixel might be your option.

  • Free Forever, Great Quality, AVI output, great control (draw a box where you want to record etc), HD

Its called Hypercam 2 (ignore any other Hypercam Versions)
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I like ScreenFlow, but I believe it's only available for Mac users & it's somewhat pricey. I've never tried Screencast-O-Matic, but it sounds pretty interesting.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I find camtasia very user friendly; easy to learn and apply. Phenomenal tutorials and features and quality is excellent.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • i am using camstudio for such purpose.its much easy to use as compared to others.

    • If you are on a Mac they have native screen capture right in OS-x. For $99 bucks you can get screenflow which sits on top of it and allows you to do all your camtasia functions but considerably less expensive.

I haven't tried any free software. I bought screenflow on blackfriday with 30% off so that one time cost is well worth the time it would take me to screw around with free software.
  • The lowdown is:

    - Camtasia Studio - best by far, but paid for (Mac version is cheaper than PC version)
    - Active Presenter - fantastic free version. Pricey paid version which you probably don't need
    - Screencast-O-Matic - free version with no editing. Cheap paid-for version with some reasonable editing capabilities
    - CamStudio - no, or very little, editing

So I reckon Active Presenter wins by a mile on the free front. Check out the Active Presenter free/paid feature comparison.

  • I always used camtasia, no problems with that software
  • Like others have said depends what you want it for but the paid version of Screencast-O-Matic for $15 does a pretty good job in my opinion and it is really simple to use. If you want to do anything fancy then look at Camtasia.
  • Simply use windows movie maker that comes with windows. If you want to take a screen capture snapshot simply hold down the "ctrl" button and press the "prt sc" button. Then open up "paint" and simply hit past your and your screenshot will appear. You are going to want to resize it.
  • try this one www.picpick.org/‎
  • I generally only use Camstudio.... or on some laptops/desktops (mainly Dell really).... Alt + PrntScrn.
  • I use CamStudio in combination with Windows Live Movie Maker. With CamStudio, I record the presentation and voice. In Movie Maker, I add some background music and save it as an optimized size wmv. You can use custom saving parameters to reduce the filesize. I usually do that by reducing the bitrate to some 2000 or 3000. If that's only a ppt type video, you really don't need bitrate higher than that.

Some problems to be aware of with CamStudio:
    1. I'm used to start/stop recording with F8/F9 keys. F9 key does not work anymore in the current CamStudio version. So I stick with last but one, always denying upgrade at startup.
    2. When selecting a fixed screen area (I always use 16:9 proportion), it is important first to release "fixed top left corner" and then set it again after selecting. Then Camstudio will remember where exactly you put the rectangle on your screen.
    3. "Record from speakers" option has never worked for me. But I use the microphone option, and that works very well.

With that said, if you want to produce just nice simple presentation videos with voice and music, I can't see why you would need to buy software for that.

On the other hand, if you want to do something more sophisticated like e.g. re-capture videos with sound, use luxurious animations, etc, then you'll probably have to decide for an investment.
  • Hypercam works well.

    • SnagIt works very well for me. You can do screenshots and videos with it. I also use camtasia studio.
  • Jing is another movie type screen capture tool you might want to look at TechSmith | Jing, Free Screenshot and Screencast Software

Greenshot is what I use to capture individual pages.
  • I am using Jing software..really awesome and worth it to use!

  • Camstudio is good but if you want all the extras plus the great tutorials Camtasia is still 'it' for me. It is an excellent product.

It is expensive but it's a one off cost.
  • I will tell you a FREE technique, that is going to blow your mind off, coz you already know about it, but you have never thought of it.

Google...Yes, Google! Google Hangout to be precise.

I'm sure you will have a Google ID. Just in case not, go get one, it's for free anyhow!

Go to YouTube (it's part of your Google services), and click on Upload.

On the right hand side click on "Broadcast" under "Google+ Hangouts On Air".

Once the Google Hangout has started, click on "Start Broadcast" at the bottom.

Once it has started broadcasting (recording), now you can do screen capture.

To do that, take your mouse to the left side panel and few options will pop up. Click on "Screenshare" and choose whatever window you want to capture.

    Once done, "Stop Broadcast".

Now won't have to even upload it to YouTube anymore, coz it's already there. :-)

    Enjoy!

    Let me know your results.

    • I appreciate all of you who responded to help me out.

I ended up going with the $15 pro version of Screencast-o-magic. Simple to use, and uploads to YouTube automatically.

So to anyone else who arrives here, add me to the list of those who recommend this affordable and effective tool.
  • I like SnagIt it works great for videos and static images, much cheaper than full blown camtasia studio. and does everything I need.

    • Try Google Hangout on Air.

It's free and you can show your desktop's screen and the video is autommatically saved on your Youtube channel.

      Thanks

  • I like Camstudio. As other guys already suggested it is free/cheap and very easy to use.
  • If you're a Mac user, ScreenFlow all the way
  • Another one that works well is IceCreamApps free screen recorder. I've used it on Windows 8 without any problems. To Convert files to AVI or another just download the media conversion software too.

If you want to do any editing you'll need an editor. Maybe try Wondershare Video Editor. (not free).
