I was about to purchase a Macbook when I just noticed that Camtasia cant be used on Mac computers.

Is there any other screen capture software that Mac users can use?

  • yes there's actually even better ! There's a program called ScrenFlow which is simply amazing ! You can check a video i've done using it on my blog just there : www.UltimateForexReview.com

The only drawback is that it costs about $100...

    Cheers, Samuel !

    • That's cheaper than Camtasia. I paid close to $300 for Camtasia.
  • Screenflow rocks. By far the best choice at the moment.

Jing works well for quick and dirty screen captures too. It's great for client and outsourced staff communication. Record, make your point, post. Done.

    Best,

  • Hi Desmond,

Yep - Screenflow's the Mac answer for Camtasia and
they are definitely an excellent alternative to it =)

  • I use Snapz X Pro, not sure how it compares to camtasia but it does screen capture...

  • I use Snapz Pro as well. I have a friend at apple who says the new OS has full support for video screen captures so if you can wait for Snow Leopard I would.

  • I've got a MacBook as well.

I got iShowU from iShowU - for OSX 10.4 (Tiger)

It doesn't have everything the high end software has, but it's only $29.95 and works pretty well. If you try iShowU, you can do your screen capture stuff and then dump the file into iMovieHD which will come on your Mac and add tons of special effects.
  • On my Macs I use Screenium - Synium after having tested all of the other products mentioned on this post, and I use Jing for simple snapshots. Camtasia is a hard act to follow, when you're used to all the bells and whistles it has to offer. But, my sources tell me that the Mac version will be a very enticing product to consider.
  • Screenflow. One of my friends has a video review sites and the quality of her videos speaks for itself! IMO, Screenflow beats camtasia any day.
  • I liked Snapz Pro X as well. Easy to use, well worth it. Not a lot of bells and whistles, mind you.

    • Also, for quick and dirty on a Mac, I use the simple, built-in

command+shift+3 [press all 3 keys together] which gives you a screen snapshot to your desktop

      OR

command+shift+4+space [press all 4 together] which gives you the ability to select via click-n-drag the portion of the screen you want the screen snapshot of - again it goes to your desktop.

      Hope this helps,
      Dot

PS - command = the apple key.

      I am on a MacBook with OS X 10.4.11

  • I just stumbled upon a head-to-head comparison of the most popular screencasting apps for the Mac. Thought it might be useful to post it here:
