We're using it for quite a while now and it's a pretty good software.
You can post updates instantly and your designers can view it in real time.

Now if you need more alternatives aside from what we have suggested here, this list of PMS is worth it to check out.

Podio is another good option. I used it for a while and found it effective.

Is there a tool that offers lifetime free plan? We don't have a big team, nor do we intend to grow our team size for some more years to come. So, a free tool with basic features would do for us.

I have used Simple Machines Forum in the past to setup team management. I setup separate forums for each project and sub-forums for each team member and if collaboration was necessary a sub-forum for that. In the admin control panel you can create a group that only has access to certain forums, the add the person to that group or groups that gives them the access they need.

Make sure to disable public access of the forum and each sub forum giving only access to the groups you setup. When the project is complete or someone is fired or maybe moved to another project you just remove them from or add them to the designated group.

I require my outsourcers to document their progress and upload the work they performed before being paid. Those that don't or slack on documentation get fired and not paid because they can't prove they actually did anything. Saves a lot of hassle and being ripped off by people that don't do anything and just sit back and take money.

This is NOT a true project management system with pretty bells and whistles but for just basic team and project management it works.

Make sure you give explicit instructions and what is required of them during the process. When they slack on those, decide how much you will accept and inform them to either get back in line with your requirements or release them.

Make sure you ONLY pay for performed work and not some hourly wage they expect to be paid. I don't hire employees when outsourcing, I hire for completed work and that work must be documented and in hand before I pay a nickel. Doesn't have to be completed but I must have proof they are working and I get to see the progress. If they bail you aren't out money with nothing to show for it.

Stand by your guns, you can ALWAYS find someone else to take over.

I know you're looking for free, but if you start looking for quality, definitely use BaseCamp.

Search for a plugin called TOUCH BASE, it was sold as a WSO once.

Does almost all what BaseCamp does without any monthly fee.

Trello is actually really good with developers because you can use it with Agile and Scrum methodologies.

I also recomend Asana
