Hey there!

I have been meaning to write a top 10 list of fitness apps that I like for my website(titan-body.com) but I am wondering about some of the legal issues attached to it.

The main issue is the use of app's logos or screenshots.
Is it possible for me to use the Logos posted by the company on Google Play or the Apple store? Or can I use the screenshots that are provided on the same sources(with a link and attribution to the source)?

Are all those ideas reasonable or you would do it any other way?

Please help

I am not a lawyer, but I would think you cannot take other peoples images without permission.

Using other people's logo's will get you sued. Ask a lawyer, if it's a legal question.

Never use somebody else's photos without permission, just ask maybe they'll be willing to let you use them for free or for a cheap price

Disclaimer, this is not legal advice, if you feel you need legal advice you should consult a legal expert in your jurisdiction.

You can begin by reading the usage requirements of the owner, for example Apple has a very strict guideline for how you can use its images, its very narrow, but there are some instances that you can do so, again get with an attorney if need be.

I recently ran into this issue in a display for a clients mobile publishing system, I had to generate new icons, which represented the platforms the client wanted to publish to, this way I could generate a license for usage.

For example review this document to see examples of how you can use a mark and how you cannot use a mark, its very restrictive, but it is also not hard to understand what they want from you in exchange for using the mark.

    App Store Marketing Guide

Each publisher or platform has its own unique usage you can either abide by the terms of use or create you own graphics, which also have some requirements, again if you need legal advice always seek professional assistance, "Never go to a doctor for stock advice"

Thanks for the replies but I think some of the points made here are a bit odd.

You can easily go on the web and write "top X android apps" and get lots of pages filled a short review of the app plus some kind of graphic- mostly it would be a logo or a screenshot from the device itself.

Then, you are telling me each of those website, some of them are also brand new and don't have the big presence on the web like other sites have such as- PC magazine or Men'sfitness, contacted the developer of the app and ask them if they can take a screenshot of app on their smartphone?

My point is- they are not stealing the company's logo or brand name. Furthermore, they are doing them a service by advertising their app do additional users.

Correct me if I am wrong.

In the U.S., if you're doing reviews/news coverage, using other peoples logos is ok and is covered by the Fair Use law. Google it and you'll see.

Someone else is going to launch an app about business, I think this is good than other apps, because it has more info about its related searches.
