I am learning a lot from lurking around this forum, but two things that I have been wondering...

what does pinging your site actually do?

and what is social bookmarking your site do?

    Pinging your site is like tapping the search engines on the shoulder and telling them you just did something and they should come back to visit and have a looksee.

    Social bookmarking says "hey, this is cool" and can sometimes help you build backlinks to your site and tell others "look what I found" and it can help drive traffic to your site.
