Hi. I have Hostgator as well. I'm not sure I understand your question, but I've always gotten excellent customer service from their technical support. The # is (713) 574-5287. Sometimes, it's just a matter of being really clear on what the problem is, otherwise the tech support people can get confused. I hope that helps. Definitely call them.

sounds like a configuration issue on your end. I have hostgator right now and have no problems.

Just keep talking with the chat and open a support ticket until your problem is solved. HG are very good about handling their customer support, you'll be fine.

And yes, the "Add On Domains" button is the way you do what you want to do, so you are doing it the right way from what I can tell.

It sounds like you are doing it right if I understand. I would suggest calling them rather than doing the chat thing. You can usually get through in less than a minute and they don't rush you--they take their time and work it out with you. I have had excellent experiences with them on the phone. yes you should make an add-on domain. Did you move the domain to the hostgator nameservers? And even if you did it can take a few hours before it starts working on the new domain, so just set it up in the blabla.blabla.com first

Yes ... when you want to add another domain to hostgator, you use Addon domain. But if they've already taken care of it, you don't need to do that. Once you add it on, you can upload your files to it. Make sure your nameservers are set to the hostgator hosting you have.

Once the domain is added and your nameservers are set, it can take up to 48 hrs for the domain to resolve. Not always, but it can.

I never setup sites as addon domains. I always set each domain with their own account and control panel. Though you can only do that with a reseller account.

When you get into using addon domains where you have one main account and then seperate subfolders in one parent folder where you point each domain to the correct subfolder. If you have a lot of domains managing the websites gets to be a nightmare.

Make sure that you point your dad's domain to the correct subfolder for the site you are creating for him.

In your cPanel if you use fantastico to install wordpress make sure that you enter the correct subfolder you are installing wordpress into.

If you do those things correctly you should not have any problems connecting to your dad's site and logging into wordpress. Problems can occur in addon domain situations where you point to the wrong destination folder.

It is critical though that you never put any websites or files in the parent folder that contains the addon domain subfolders. If you ever do this you just gave anyone that can connect to the website pointing to the parent folder access to EVERY single site in your hostgator account. They have to know how to look but this is a common security issue when using addon domains or some call them subdomains though that isn't technically correct as subdomains are setup different.

Subdomains are where you have an existing website and you designate a subfolder somewhere inside the main website folder structure and point the new domain to that subfolder.

Hostgator allows you to do both easily and sometimes interchangeably, but most people do not think ahead when they implement these layouts and can run into trouble down the road from security issues and script errors.

Though cPanel gives more security than some other hosting platforms you can run into trouble with security issues if you do not properly layout subdomains. That is why I always setup my domains and websites with thier own unique control panel and seperate secured space instead of sharing space with other websites in the same folder structure.

Technically they are anyway but there is more security with their own seperate access. This is not a limitation of hostgator, ALL hosting allows what I described but the majority of the issues I see are improper setup by users.

You made mistake while installing the wordpress script. You install the script in the domain.anotherdomain.com, go to fantasico and install the script on your dad's domain. When you click on the domain, there will be a drop down menu, select your dad domain on it own,i.e dad'sdomain.com. "not "daddomain.yourdomain.com" then it will be istall on your dad's domain.

Good advice from Shelly. I had that problem the first few times I tried adding a new domain.

Use the addon domain, but it is going to have it's own URL. www.yourdadsite.com
You will have to go into fantastico and remove the wordpress you installed with the www.youwebsite.dadsite.com that is a Sub Domain...not an addon domain.

Then make sure you go to where you bought the domain name and change the DNS (Domain Name Servers) setting to the NS444.sampleDNSserver.com settings that Hostgator gave you when you set up your hosting.

I had this problem a lot when I first started setting up Wordpress. And I actually got to know the people at Hostgator! LOL It's pretty bad, when you start recognizing their names and voices.

But seriously, Hostgator is an awesome hosting company. Not many hosting companies have 24/7/365 phone or voice chat service. They are awesome.

HostGator is an okay host. The speed you get depends on the server you are placed on and how saturated it is. Their support is okay. The people that rave about them haven't experienced truly good hosting. However for shared hosting at their price point they are about as good as anyone else.
