Who else absolutely hates coming up with names for products? Man, if I had a penny for every minute I spent trying to come up with a creative name for something...

Am I the only one that would rather pull nose hairs all day than come up with a stinking product name?

    I usually narrow it down with available .com domain names first. That helps
    a little. There are several tools online where you can put in a word or two and it comes up with ideas, and at the same time a matching TLD.

    This is how i do it. First i check domains then see which is easy to remember and sound good enough. Then pick few names and ask some friends. Most liked name get picked.

      I got stuck with kickstart for loads of my products, and "Dominator" and "Academy" - I know what you mean though - sitting there with the Thesaurus trying to pick one.

    That sure seems to be a problem with so many products these days, just saw one recently that had a name that suggested something rather dirty, (I dont think they intended it) sometimes things just come out wrong.

    I have a simple formula.

    1) Pick a keyword below...

    academy, school, class, classroom, training, summit, master, masters, mastery, blueprint, blueprints, report, reports, buzz, worksheet, manual, guide, checklist, whitepaper, case study, summit, machine, crusher, pro, cube, stand, press, formula, domination, direct, system, sense, influence, power,

    2) Then add one of your products main keywords.

    Finally, run it on this website.

    If the product is something very dear to you and you are trying to benchmark it as a remarkable product then you'd have to consider it very carefully. Gibberish names works one in a million shot. (See Kodak, Xerox, Ping Pong , Thermos, Zipper band Aid, Etc.) Heck, even small name adjustments is a big deal (Facebook was supposed to be called FaceMash or worse, "The Face Book")

    Most brand names in this category have become verbs thanks to their usage. (When we tweet-- Twitter)
    Make that product renowned to the extent that it will become part of the language.

    Like a joke I once read in a newspaper comic,
    "What should we call this New World?"
    "Why don't we call it Fred?"

    So there it is, instead of America it is now called Fred.

    Just remember, when naming products it has to be easy to remember (and spell) and be something that is easily associated on what it does.

      Since you're in the IM/MMO space, it looks like you need to start with the following list:

      > A natural disaster, like a hurricane or tsunami
      > An illegal or performance-enhancing drug, like crack or steroids
      > A criminal like an assassin or ninja
      > Last, and probably least, what the product does

      Now just mix and match until you get the ultimate IM product name.

      [PS, that bulge in my cheek is indeed my tongue wedged firmly...]

    After one or two glasses of red wine I always seem to come up with a good product name. I am totally serious! Not sure if it will work for you, but it's worked wonders for me.

    I enjoy coming up with product name ideas but when it comes to domain names it is totally different. I don't ever remember finding a domain name that I was 100% happy with. There is one thing that increases my creativity though: Reading classic novels.

      I know, right. It's like, the older the internet gets, the more impossible it is to come with a decent product name that isn't 20 words long, with 19 of the 20 words being completely meaningless.

    Agree it can be tough!
    My method, well part of it anyway, is to put main search term/kw into Google images and get inspiration there. Gives a very quick sense of the popularity of the subconscious imaging.

    Then, check trademark issues also.

    I search through Amazon books and jot down any titles that stand out to me. I then use those for inspiration. I have a list of power words that come in handy for grabbing attention and mix those into the titles too.
