THE POWER OF NOW vs POSITIVE THINKING

Hi all! to anyone who has read "the power of now" by Eckhart tolle or is familiar with his teachings and any one who has studied positive thinking.

Do you like the power of now, or positive thinking? I have studied both and Ive got to say im a lot more comfortable with positive thinking. Eckhart tolle has some valid points, he says to focus on the present moment entirely and not to get wrapped up in thoughts but I find he is far to spiritual, his techniques are harder to put a finger on and it just makes me end up thinking more about my problems!! constantly analysing what is going on in my head and trying to separate myself from my mind.

Whereas positive thinking just seems a lot more practical and is easy to apply to most situations. Rather than trying to detach myself from my thoughts I can simply choose to focus on the positive ones rather than the negative.

Would love to hear peoples views on these 2 subjects.

Thank you.
Shane.

Positive thinking is the solution to master your thoughts, you cant stop thoughts you can only choose what to focus on so by focusing on positive thoughts you get positive results.

I recommend you to watch the movie called The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

The concepts work together. To be able to reframe a situation into positive. You must become aware that you are being negative. To become aware you need to be in the present.

  • What up Shane!

Big O here, and I just wanted to give my 2 cents real quick on your discussion.

First off, I can completely understand why you may be confused as to which avenues should approach when it comes to APPLYING this information to your Life.

With that being said I LOVE this quote by Marshall Sylver (Google him) that says, "It's not an either or world, it's an AND world!". That is so simple, yet SO PROFOUND, because it is basically saying that you don't have to choose!

My suggestion would be to do BOTH. Utilize Positive Thinking to help you focus on a Better Future AND stay in the Present Moment looking for the Next Logical Step. Positive Thinking can be used to focus on your future and the Present Moment can be used to Clarify Your Next Logical Step.

    You feel me?

    Hope that helps Fam!

    Yours In Prosperity,

Thanks for your comments. I like the idea of using both but I have heard/read comments from Eckhart tolle saying he thinks positive thinking is preferable to negative thinking but ultimately you need to be free from thinking all together (apart from using it in the practical aspects of your life) and it bothers me when im trying to apply positive thinking in my life.

I wish I had never read his book lol!

Seriously though it does niggle me a bit as before I read his book I was getting a pretty positive mind set locked in then that sort of through me off!

      Thanks.
      Shane.

I agree you want to use both, although with a priority on the power of now as it's more difficult to be positive and at peace when you're thinking about the past or future. In meditation you may want to remove all thinking, however in day to day life you want to be in the now most of the time, and learn to identify negative thoughts and release them the moment they try to arise. That is a matter of controlling your thoughts rather than letting them run on automatic, and learning to recognize that you are the awareness of the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. If you don't allow negative thoughts to arise then you are achieving positive thinking or at least neutral thinking. The mindfulness teachings based upon Vipassana can help with this.

Use what works for you. Everyone has a different way of overcoming negativity. I would try both positive thinking and the power of now separately. Then I would try both together and see what works the best for you personally.
