It would be helpful, IF, you also offered a system or plan to do it. Backward chaining was prevalent in the 70's with social work done with Developmentally Disabled people.

As you stated, it sounds easier said than done. And If done right, albeit, you don't offer, as usual per your posts like this, any process or procedure.

So what are some of the steps, or how do we make backward chaining a useful tool?

I suggest a couple of books. The first one, TRACTION by Gino Wickman. Since this book was written, a whole industry of consulting using the tools in this book have become a huge business coaching success.

His use of SCORECARDS is an element to add to your idea. Or a qualification CARD, or checklists.
The best example of this practice can be found in the teachings of multi-millionaire Harvey Brody, who has 55+ years of continuous success and has sold over a billion dollars of products he owns and controls.

Harvey's version of backward chaining is a VIEW FROM THE ROOFTOP, to see the idea totally manifested as if you are looking at from the top of a building. Then along the sides of the building there is a ladder. The last rung on the top of the ladder is the step off rung, what does it look like? Then go down the ladder.

My modified version is to have a fire escape type ladder with six steps to the next platform, and have 52 of those in a year. Each step is a day of effort going up toward your goal.

Absolutely, a clear vision of the result you want is going to beat blind leaps every day of the week.

Another good book is Complexity Crisis by John Marriotti in it, he shows how to start with simple and examine closely when you add things to it.

If I had a life where anything I have done up to this point came out even close to as planned this might be a great begginer method .

Nearly a hundred percent of what I want to do others have done . So when I want to plan out something I study people who have done the thing I want to do and the problems they ran into along the way and how they handled those problems.

Planning backwards you might want to make several set of plans that get you to the same point

As there will be times you hit a block in the set of plans you flare following but can easily jump to another set of plans that could moving closer to the destination at the end of the plans

Yes, currently doing that now with the stockmarket, although that is more micromanaging than backtracking or reviewing.

Definitely helpful topic. I heard Arnold Schwarzenegger once, and he said in order to drive a boat you have to know where the destination is. Once you know your destination you can easily make decisions on where to go. If you do not know where you want to go you will keep driving it around and around you will never get anywhere..
