I know there are a few folks who have read the book in this forum, does anybody think they know what it is?

I've read the book so many times, I have some ideas. But i'd love to hear your thoughts!

OO! Wait, isn't this one of those things where if you tell someone what the secret is then they won't believe it and be doomed to failure forever

Hahaha, I think everyone has a different idea what the secret is though, and I think that as long as you really believe you have found it and it really works for you... then you have..

    • I'd suggest you read it again... slower. Sounds funny but sometimes that's what it takes.

I used to think I need to get through as many books as I can to make the most progress. But now I try more to get the most out of the books I read, in reasonable time.

And really, I think if there was a flat out, simple "secret" that they just jam down your throat (kinda like the new secret lol) then people wouldn't get that much out of it.

Thanks for the feedback, I've had this book in my possession since I was 19 and at 30, I still am not quite sure what it is.

Well as I get older I do think it means something more than it did in the past. But I'm just curious what you guys think.

Personally I feel it is 100% faith in something that has to happen. Total belief.

You are absolutely right on about the total belief thing. But here's the rub: Any belief no matter what it is about can only be established in one of these two ways.

              1. Through argument - a story, a discussion, a great book read over and over such as Think and Grow Rich (you get the idea)
              2. Through hard evidence - like if you put your finger over a flame you will be able to totally believe anyone who says that fire burns.

Now, I'm sure that you would agree hard evidence trumps mere argument any day. So the real question is: How can I create authentic belief in myself (that "I can be a success" for example) through the use of hard evidence?

For the last 80 years or so those who promote the great works of the original personal development pioneers, such as Mr. Hill for example, have been trying to convince you that the main argument that's carefully laid out and expertly crafted in these works (as well as in all the derivative expressions of it) is enough in itself to deliver the goods.

Because of this it's not surprising that you - and many millions of others like you - are still found wanting.

It turns out that the argument that these books espouse - which are great works indeed so don't get me wrong here - only seem to work for the lucky few. Maybe 2% to 4% of overall readership.

That's because the argument itself is mostly based on the success stories of others. It is their story not your story so all it has power to do is resonate in your thoughts and thoughts, as we know, are way too changeable in
              today's over-stimulated world.

The idea that "I did it and therefor so can you" is powerful motivation but, unfortunately for millions of readers, that's not always good enough to get them over the first few tough challenges they run into so they give up.

Hard evidence has to be felt by you personally, not just in the head brain, but through the physical nerve endings of the gut brain (enteric nervous system).

There are sound reasons for that and I've spent many years studying them. I have proven in my testing that head-based motivation is a lot weaker than agut-based drive like persistence is for example.

More power to you my friend.

A belief can be created by spaced repetition--- autosuggestion. Or an emotional event like near death. That's what the chapter on Autosuggestion spoke about. Many here need to really read this powerful book. It'll change your life.

Oh my gosh, I haven't heard that term in so many years. To Grok!
I read that book, Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlen, (for those who don't know) when I was 18 yrs old. wow that would be about......yrs ago!
          thanks for using it.

Think=as in thinking using the mind to its greatest ability.
Grow Rich= as in being rich with love, care, giving. Receiving those gifts back. Maybe even material wealth for survival and spiritual joy and satisfaction? Can we, do we give of ourselves.
Life is a series of special moments, not sure how they happen. I want more of those.

I know rich and poor. $10 can be a lot of money for 1 person. $100 may be no big deal to another. But so often I see if you don't have some grace in your life, you are struggling for more. The guy with $50,000 a month has to have $100,000 to suit a better lifestyle. It seems to never end.
Good luck and think wisely for what you want!

I haven't heard the word grokked since sometime in the 60's when I was involved in a yoga group and was reading all the great books like "Magic of Believing", "Think and Grow Rich" and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "Stranger in a Strange Land". We also "shared water"...It's like a shot out of the past.

Regarding "Think and Grow Rich", the author tells the reader that what he is talking about (the secret) can be found in each chapter. It has to do with taking control of our thought process, which normally runs along it's own course and out of control. Then, we begin to write out our goals and choose the direction we want to go.

You're absolutely correct! I misrepresented this in my first statement. Thanks for clearing this up... the key is learning to control and direct thinking (as a whole both consciously and unconsciously), which is a very intricate process that few master.

In my mind, "The Secret" is no secret at all. It's only termed a 'secret' so every Tom, Dick & Billy Bob will pay top dollar to 'learn' it from someone who claims to know!

P.S. If you remain true to yourself, work constantly to maintain a good, healthy self image without appearing to be conceited or stuck up, and wake up each day with a 'can-do' attitude, a zest for life and respect for your fellow man....Then You Already Know The Secret and you can't help but be a success!

        The secret is 'visualization'.

Whatever it is that you want, if you visualize already having it, your unconscious mind will find ways for you to get it.

That's it: simple and easy. All you have to do is do it.

Very very true. When we read a book for the first time, we only read and remember what we are looking for. But the more we read a good book, we start looking at so many things we had overlooked before. In most cases those are the ones that gives new ideas and help us solving our problems.

You need to understand that this book will be different each time you read it. Alas, there are many secrets and most are in plain sight.

Here are the 13 Success Principles as Napoleon Hill outlined them.

Desire, Faith, Auto-Suggestion (same as programming your subconscious mind), Specialized Knowledge (being an expert of something), Imagination (visualizing your goals/dreams), Organized Planning, Decision, Persistence, The Master Mind, Transmutation, The Subconscious Mind, The Brain and The Sixth Sense (intuition)

Napoleon Hill spent 20 years studying the most powerful and influential 500 people. He found all of these people had something in common. They experienced or had done these 13 success principles.

The book is more of understanding these and then feeling them in yourself for the most part. Some of these principles may need to be practiced to be developed, understanding may not be part of it. For example the suggestion that you give to your subconscious mind doesn't necessarily need be understood but done. Once you keep doing that your mind will start to believe it and that's when you start to take action which intern will help you achieve your goals that much sooner.

In my opinion, this is exactly what the "secret" was. Once you identify a definite purpose, you can essentially organize the rest of your life around fulfilling that purpose. I have used this personally and so far it seems to be working well for me. I am very happy with my results.

The secret in "Think and Grow Rich" is simple but not necessarily easy to accomplish. That's why Napolean Hill spent 20 years of his life creating the book and interviewing hundreds of real successes to verify what he was told by Andrew Carnegie.

I'm there with you on that one. If I had to summarise the book in one sentence, that would be exactly it.

        Thoughts are things.

It took me awhile to really "get" it.

It's easy and hard at the same time! If you become a bit more aware of your thoughts, you realise how much of what we think is not positive. Easy to understand, not so easy to change, especially at first. But it does become MUCH easier with practice. Every time you find yourself thinking of a negative possible scenario, ask yourself how you would prefer it to be. Every time you think of yourself in a negative way, change that in your mind, and take steps to change your habits or whatever you think needs working on.

The thing is, the mind is not stationary. If you don't force yourself to think positive, the mind wanders to the negative side -- and let's face, one only has to watch the news to sink into gloom and doom, not to mention the problems we all come up against in our lives.

        Cheers!

I don't think that's the complete secret as he flat out says it in the book which makes it not all that big of a secret. But if you have the actual letter you know better than me. I do think that's the first half of the secret he was referring to though.

So most people buy the book (except when recommended) because they get the perfect promise through a method that is nearly effortless.

"Watch TV and get women to worship you" would be a similar title.

Anyway, I think it really is an extremely helpful book, but its title was originally going to be "Use Your Noodle To Increase Your Bootle" (The spelling of the last word is wrong. Sound it out). Look it up. Do you think it would have been the best seller that is is with that title?

I agree with all the positive thinking warriors here - but I wondered if any of you get torn between the money-making part of your vision for your life, and the charitable part. I am always cutting myself down the middle doing charity stuff and my money-making stuff but there isn't enough time in the day. I wonder if I should put charity stuff aside until I get my cashflow higher. If I van make $1000/month I can make 100K/month - its just working smarter, right?

From the Title itself, Think and Grow Rich teaches us to let our minds dominate our actions by creating positive thoughts and eventually take action! No one will never want to be rich I guess and with this kind of globalization that we're having, our thoughts should be strong enough to visualize and plan for the better and not waste every precious time to start making money.

Everyone will have different answer! No one thinks alike. I have read the book TGR several times. Each time you read a chapter, you will get a different idea! Indeed, what matters most is to do your job or work and leave the result to the infinite intelligence. We are the true masters of universe, however, covered with veil of ignorance and weakness. Indeed, we have dedicated a entire forum to discuss the principles outlined in TGR!

It's a hugely powerful emotion, stronger maybe than love.

Since February my Adsense revenue is up 500%. That's the secret of this book.

I agree with other posts that the whole secret is about your "mindset" and what you set yourself to do in life and how you can accomplish it. Napoleon Hill states that "Our only limitations are those we set up in our minds." I agree that you should read the book again and absorb the 13 Principles, which is also posted by Thinker1.

You may also want to start from the last chapter (Chapter 15) - How to outwit the 6 Ghosts of Fear. Read that and go through the self analysis towards the end of that chapter and once you go through that start reading the book all over again. All the Best!

I think writing your goals down with pen and paper is one of the most important things you can do. Can't remember where I heard this, but the act of writing them down brings them from the world or potentiality into the physical world, thus making them "real."

    Hi there to you all,

From my experience, and practice of what I have learned from the book I beleive it is about the fact that Thoughts are Things. In addition to that, it is about constantly learning from the book. What do I mean by that? Quite simply, that you need to regularly be reading it, as you will pick up gems each time. It's just like that, and takes regular reading, and practice of all you learn from it.

Have you ever read a book and then gone back and read it again at a later date and found a different message/s to what you thought was there the first time.

      Well Put
THe key to it all is the determination to fail if you must till you succeed. True faith that you will succeed amplifies your efforts 1000%

The Secret was never a secret.

Most of us are too lazy to succeed. Do the hard thing first and it will get easy. Do the easy thing first and it will always get hard.

We spend our lives avoiding the things we know we should do. Take the easy road and except what life will give you. Rather than going and getting what it is we want.

We all have excuses. Some of us solve them and end in success and some of us continue to use the excuses as the crutch for not getting what they want.

Is it failure if we never really ever tried?

TAGR teaches that life follows the direction of your thoughts.

Choose your thoughts and you choose your life.

The error is to choose thoughts based on appearances. Hill discusses how the keys to success are states of mind and have nothing to do with outside conditions.

Thoughts are things, and they become tangible, touchable things when held in the face of circumstances which don't conform to them.

This book and Bob Proctor's teachings were my inspirations. I strongly recommend anybody going into business for themselves to read and study TAGR on daily basis.

Just read it - my "holiday" read

Hill's words are true! I also read (and practice) Charles F Haanel's "The Master Key" which is pretty much the same philosophy, just a different way os saying the same thing.

To the OP... I suggest you read Haanel's book too (ISBN 0900 604050), then compare & integrate/apply the two; each will give you a better understanding of the other.

The "secret"? (explained better - but more profoundly - in "The Master Key") is simply about how to use your mind by the power of autosuggestion, and how/why autosuggestion works. As I said, what you don't understand from one book, you'll find in the other.

I personally believe that there's more to LOA than Napoleon Hills wrote.

The steps and methods laid out in Think and Grow Rich, as I see, are merely ways to "tune yourself in" with the Universe. They are just the beginning, not the ending, thus shouldn't be overly emphasized on.

Despite scientific approaches does help in understanding LOA, it's more a spiritual thing. You get it, you get it. You don't, you don't. Focus on our mental development, and we will get there naturally.

If I have to put it into words, LOA is simply the manifesto of our minds.

We attract only like-minded people. So turn around and look at your best and most closest friends, are they what you want to become? Are they, in your own term, successful enough?

If not, go hang out with people you want to become, so you can change the way you think and become one of them. Then you'll start to attract more of the same kind of people.

Yea... I know this has been said a zillion times by many others.. but geez.. it does work like a charm..

At the end of the say, we are what we believe, that's for sure.

      Just my 2 cents.

I think T&GR was written before The Master Key, as in the latter, there are explanations of a couple of point that T&GR suggests are "not known to mankind" (i.e an explanation of the Universal Mind:

Since all mind is as one... that, by default means that our own minds are all part of the whole - and that is how and why we can tap into the infinite mind (or intelligence)

For me "the secret" is that he (or she) who wants things most (what others have called 'burning desire') will get what they want. I think the story early in the book about the girl asking for a quarter for her mother and insisting on it and the full-grown man ending up giving it to her shows this.

I read of a more modern day example of this phenomenon, where a 70 or 80 year old woman was accosted in her apartment elevator by a young healthy man who attempted to steal her handbag and money. Anyone would assume that the young man would be the victor. He had stolen from old folks before, but she was bound and determined that no one was going to take her money and she beat him off and sent him fleeing the scene wounded in some way. I don't remember the details. This made her quite a local celebrity and it was written up in the paper which is where I read it. Why did the old woman and the little girl win? because each wanted what was being fought over more than the other person involved. They would not be denied (or as others have stated here, they were determined to keep doing whatever it took until they achieved their goal).

I really like that you posted this thread. I had a year or two after I first read the book where I didn't really feel that I had a sense of what "the secret" was -- that which the book had said would be revealed to me. And while the answer might be different for each person, I find it interesting and helpful to hear others' views.

The secret to the book is the 'law of attraction' like in the book "The Secret".
You keep your desires in the forefront of your thinking, you believe that it will be so, you diligently pursue your dream, and couple it with emotional enforcement. Appreciate what is, and expect to receive what you want. You constantly think, see, and feel your success until it comes to fruition. You put out the 'success' vibration until it is your reality. Greater belief and stronger conviction/emotions bring results faster than self doubt and listening to people who think they can't.

        I hope this helps.

Actually, the "secret" is that there really is NO secret. But just the word alone compels people to want to check it out, savor it, desire it, search for it. It's THE WORD "secret" that is the proverbial Panda's Box.

I was going to use that word as part of the title for my book (The Book on Amazing, Internal STRESS Release: 10 Steps to Free Yourself Forever). The first title I had halfway through the writing of it was, The SECRET to Amazing, Internal STRESS Release, but my bookwriting coach strongly suggested I change it. So, since he's a wealthy, multimillionaire, NY Times Bestselling author several times over, of course I obeyed him.

And, because of that, my book is tearing up the charts and doing extremely well. So, if anyone is getting "stressed-out" because your business is not profitable yet, or not going as fast as you want it to, then this book should help you mentally. I read somewhere one time that "if you want to make something really secret, make sure that everyone knows about it". This meaning that the "secret" that is in the book, is not secret a all. Everyone knows it, and this is why it is so "secret". Because no one gives it importance. You know it, I'm sure, but still you do not realize it is the key that opens everything.

Start thinking of successful people in your life, and maditate on how they became successful. When you see someone who is successful, see what makes him different from everyone else. This is how I realized the secret in the book. When you will see it, it will hit you like a thunder, believe me.

I got it! Here's the secret: it's passion. If you truly love what you do you will naturally attract every one of Hill's keys to success. Love for for what you do creates unbelievable riches in every way incl. the key to create money. If you read through the examples he cites in his book when he's talking about the secret you'll see that every person loves what they do: his son was passionate about helping other deaf people to talk, Edwin Barnes was passionate about working for Edison, Ford was obsessed with creating advancements in the fledgling motorcar industry. All these people cared deeply about what they were doing. That is why Hill said that when you discover the secret there will be no call for hard work. If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life. If you love what you do you'll throw everything into to, you'll never quit, you'll have outstanding ideas about how to make it better, how to develop it to serve more people, you'll naturally want to learn every ounce of knowledge on it, you'll want to join forces with other people who are just as passionate about it. And so it goes on. Good luck everyone!

I posted a while back and changed my perspective on the "secret" so wanted to see what people thought. There is the obvious one that we become what we think about. It's becoming well documented by scientists and quantum physicists (read anything by Lynne McTaggart to do your research) that our thoughts alter subatomic matter and in turn our own reality. Hill was spot on there, way before science could back him up. It's a pretty extraordinary discovery and I believe it is the secret but something else strikes me about T&GR.

In each instance that Hill mentions the secret directly (without specifically naming it) eg describing Edwin Barnes' journey to becoming Edison's partner, Ford's invention of the V8 engine, his son's job with the hearing aid manufacturer, there's something these all have in common: they are enriching others. Their motive is to benefit other people and as a result they get rich. Carnegie was the same, he set out to sell the best steel available. No one just gets rich and I believe the point Hill was making was that you must give before you can get. One cannot exist without the other. This is one of the major problems facing society today with celeb culture and consumerism gone mad - people want to be rich without giving anything in return. Given when Hill wrote this in the depths of the American Depression, I wonder whether he felt the same.

      Greetings all,

I see a lot of Warriors have touched on the "secret" in Think and Grow Rich already, so I'll just agree with them and add my 2 cents... or maybe more like 20 or 30 cents.

"Thoughts are things" is definitely a true statement IMO.

I would expand on it by stating that more and more evidence (dare I say proof? Personal experience definitely confirms it) indicates this:

Whether you look at spiritual/metaphysical new-age stuff (Law of Attraction, The Secret, TUT, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Kristin and David Morelli, Eckhart Tolle, that sort of thing); or middle ground, somewhat spiritual, motivational-type stuff (Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield/Mark Victor Hansen, John Assaraf, NLP, etc.); or even science (at least more forward-thinking sciences like quantum physics); all of them have some things in common...

Without going too deep into this topic, which would take many pages, basically all the folks above, and many more, assert that on greater/deeper levels, everything is connected (including people), and that all things (thoughts included) affect all other things on some level.

Essentially the entire universe (or universes, as some say there is more than one... perhaps an infinite number of them), including people and all other things on this little planet of ours (and maybe elsewhere if you believe in all that X-Files/Roswell-type stuff), is made up of the same "stuff" - physical/material/matter, energy, all the way up through sound, light and on into thought, consciousness, awareness and beyond.

As a self-aware, thinking entity or "being" what you "think" or "perceive" or "envision" or "visualize" immediately springs into existence on some level... maybe not physical/material right away, but apparently as soon as you picture it (become conscious of it), it can become "real" in the physical/experiential realm, sooner or later.

Common attributes of those we call "successful" be it in business, the arts, entertainment, athletics, or whatever, is that they are focused, generally have a very clear vision of what they want to achieve, and they get out there and take focused, immediate, consistent ACTION to get it done. (Tony Robbins is big on this for sure.)

Read the biographies or autobiographies of anyone who is "successful" financially or otherwise (learning from others is something you definitely must do if you want to become "successful" yourself - study those who have made it already, learn what they did/how they did it, and then emulate them), and you'll find this same kind of attitude among all of them in one form or another.

A lot of it comes down to really exploring your inner self, taking full responsibility for where you are now, realizing that YOU are the ONLY PERSON that got you where you are now, and YOU are the ONLY PERSON who can get you where you want to go... and one of the fastest ways "there" is:

      1. Determine what you're really passionate about and enjoy doing (think back to what you really dreamed of as a kid, before others came in and told you differently);
      2. Look at how you can use your passions, abilities, talents and natural gifts to create value, serve/assist others, and add to the greater good (we ALL have this ability, although most of us have repressed it to some degree);
      3. Put it into ACTION as soon as possible, then monitor your results, make adjustments as needed, and keep moving upward and forward with it.
      4. Build momentum, and always, always, always create some kind of value and service for others and/or the greater good. Yes, some people have become "rich" and "powerful" (both extremely relative and subjective terms) through cheating, intimidating, dominating or otherwise hurting others and/or the greater good, but this will ALWAYS come around and smack those folks back HARD, sooner or later. Believe it.
Other people, resources, circumstances and other things can and will come into the picture along the way to help you (or hinder you if your focus is on the wrong things), but the truth is that IT ALL COMES DOWN TO YOU and WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR OTHERS.

That's the underlying message I get from just about every good book I've ever read, whether it's a biography/autobiography, motivational/spiritual book, or even a great work of fiction. Also just about every good audio recording/music, movie, website and even *shudder* television (not that there's much good TV though - my recommendation is generally to avoid it). It's also my personal experience in this life.

Another way to look at it is your entire WORLD is basically a reflection of what YOU put "out there" or what you focus on.

This is a tough pill for many of us to swallow, as we have increasingly become a society that both blames anything and everything outside ourselves for "negative" circumstances and results, and also looks for solutions and distractions for our problems outside ourselves.

Not to say that "outside" things cannot or will not come into play as you move through life, but the seed for all of them still comes from within you.

Consciousness and perception is creation... "thoughts are things" and what you "think about" consciously, semi-consciously and subconsciously, becomes what you experience.

I have more to say but will not write a book here. This is my 1st post on WF, though I have been lurking for a while now... purchased a few WSOs too. Time to put my money where my mouth is now, and take my own advice. It's interesting that this first post is in the self-improvement section of the site as opposed to online marketing, offline marketing, WSOs, etc. I actually come from a self-improvement/inspirational/artistic/musical background so it's definitely relevant. But this ain't just about me... it's also about you, and yours, and him, and her, and all of us. So offer feedback or input if you like. It'd be good to hear from ya.

I agree! It's all our choice.

Though it may vary in different situation. Like for instance you were born very poor and you don't have a chance to go in school then it's depends what kind of strategy that you will do in order to be rich.

So still education, ideas, knowledge, being brave to apply your expertise and budgeting are the main part in order to be rich aside from marrying old rich man haha

IMO, you'll going to succeed and be rich in your chosen career if you love your job, expand your knowledge, continues learning, try smart strategy and Consistency.

      I love the keyboard analogy.

I remember going to a seminar once when they gave a really good analogy.

They said the results in life are like a printout of what's going on in our mind. If there's a spelling mistake in the document, it doesn't matter how many times you print it out, it will always be there. If, however, you changed the document in your mind, the printout will always be correct in the future.

I think that sums it up perfectly. Focus on the computer and the printout will take care of itself!

I dont think the book is fake at all, and it IS possible to get rich using the secret, you just need to focus your entire mind on it and im sure it will come true. And btw there are a million testimonials in the book itself of how people using the secret have seen a change in their lives.

The secret is simple....."take possession of your mind."

We live in a world where we allow media, politicians, church, friends and family to possess our mind. We allow them to influence us, and tell us what we can and cannot, should and should not do.

Andrew Carnegie said it best: "The man who acquires the ability to take full possession of his own mind may take possession of anything else to which he is justly entitled."

mkterbynite, I'm in the middle of my 3rd read of Think and Grow Rich. I love this book!! I've heard people tell that Bob Proctor still reads this book almost daily.

I've been interested in crystallizing the secret that NH refers to multiple times in this book. Maybe some day I'll read it only for the fun of finding every single reference he makes to it...

I really want to hear your thoughts on what it is.

At this point, here's what I'm thinking. I posted this in another discussion thread on the Forum (is Think and Grow Rich about action?) and here's what I've come up with so far:

Here's my discovery of what I think the secret is:

This book is about the power of autosuggestion (or might we say the Power of the Mind?)

Hill says this at least 2x (at least that's what I could find):

"The actual performance of transmuting desire into money involves the use of autosuggestion. The other principles are simply tools with which to apply autosuggestion. Keep this thought in mind, and you, at all times, be conscious of the important part the principle of autosuggestion is to play in your efforts to accumulate money through the methods described in this book." (Chapter 4: Autosuggestion, the 3rd Step to Riches)

    and

"The 13 principles are the stimuli with which you acquire the ability to reach and to influence your subconscious mind." (Chap. 12 The Unconscious Mind: The 11th Step to Riches)

And the way we reach the subconscious mind is through the principle of autosuggestion.

So it seems to me, that while action is how we implement the steps to becoming wealthy, the foundation of the book is aimed at mastering the art of autosuggestion. [or said another way, using our imagination to express the power of the mind?]. I think Hill is suggesting that we receive the motivation for carrying out successful through the power of autosuggestion.

    Just a thought!

mkterbynite, I'll be really interested in hearing your thoughts. As far as the folks who say there is no secret, well... it's hard to believe they've read the book. Maybe they think we're referring to the movie, rather than Hill's book that was published in 1937.

thanks for asking a great question!

To me the secret is that whatever you think about will come true. The more time you invest in things, the more you uncover. Since the separation between the 99th and 100th percentile is very small, the person who has the small advantage will reap the greatest rewards.

I personally believe in what Tony Robbins once said "what you think about, you bring about".

Everything that we have in our own personal worlds started first with a single thought before it ever came into existence so if our current lifestyle started with the power of thought why can't we use our thoughts right now to build the lifestyle that we really want?

      Hi Scott.

I think the secret (or at least my understanding of it) is really good. And, definitely something anyone can use to be more successful. I agree with you - much of what it takes to succeed is good old fashioned "hard work." Still I think the secret in TAGR can really help people. (Once they understand it.)

People say there are no "short cuts" (and I understand what they're saying - people want everything to be quick and easy) ... However I think there actually are short cuts. Or put differently, certain ways to speed up the path to "success."

For instance an important discovery for me was understanding how to deal with "failure." Here's some informtation:

another way to say it : Work = execution, action, daily tasks...

maybe the real secret is something we don't want to know.

the answer is action (today's culture obfuscates this so we lose sight of action or really what is called "work"), all else can follow from action.

I can have the clearest goals, complete belief, all the financial, psychological, and experiential (experience) capabilities. but if I don't act?

      Nothing happens

I can have no experience, little money, low intelligence, lack emotional maturity, no written goals, not even think about Belief....what if I take Action?

Then results happen and I create, develop, and improve upon all the above.

In my opinion, having given it a lot of thought recently, the secret is this:
                  1. Focus your entire being on something that will help other people while making you happy doing it.
                  2. Make an immediate decision to take action toward that focus.
                  3. Based on the result of that action, make another decision that gets you closer to your focus.
                  4. Repeat step 3 to infinity.

The secret is focused, passionate, incremental, analytical action toward a goal that serves mankind as well as yourself.

          • Taking action often isn't enough. (Well it can be however it's analogous to trying to drive with the hand break on.)

For me an important component of taking action is "Inner Game." Taking control of your mind to "release the breaks" so to speak. Which makes everything easier. : )

The reason why so many people fail in taking action (and accomplishing their goals) isn't because of lack of determination ... It's because they're being held back by their own mind. And so the solution is in their own mind also.

appreciate what your saying. However here is what pops out for me:

makes everything easier (oh, so no work )

If you had to choose 1 what would it be, a right mindset or action?

              That's not what I'm saying.

If you plan to climb Mount Everest and find a "short cut" then it makes the journey easier. However you still have to put in the work to reach the top.

                speaking of Everest :

1 man goes to "find himself" and get his mind right.

Another man stays at home to work, takes action.

1 month later, when the man comes back form the mountain top, he is enlightened and "ready"

the other man has made some money And enlightened by his results lifting up his mind, spirit, and capabilities.

neither of them is wrong. but being right is not the answer.

                my 2 cents

ps - by the way with the "shortcut" , you just described the story of the tortoise and the hare

I'm here to share my thoughts too.
Gone through loads of seminars and read loads of book, now according to bob proctor in most of his seminars where he ref think and grow rich as his inspirational book.
He say, which i believe truly in is, its where you direct your mind

That is Goals, Write your Goals in a piece of paper with the deadline of what you want. Write it in such a way that you've already achieved it.
This is where faith and autosuggestion with good feeling comes into play that you' ve already achieved thats the crucial stage.
keep that in your wallet, whenever you get time, see that paper and let the vibration flow through within your body with good thoughts so that you attract more.
The best time to see that is before going to bed and after getting up in the morning

I have loads of thing to share from Jordan Belfort Prespective and Anthony Robbins many more.

I hope the content which i shared today might improve some1's life.

I'm not sure there is one secret in it, you can take from it what you want.

However when read this book for the first time, it changed my life forever... Here's how...

At the end of 2007 I took a sabbatical. A lot in my life changed in that 4 months, however at the end of the trip I still had to come home and return to work... About 6 months later I had this real urge to return to the country I had visited previously. I knew no one there, had no job to go to and it was on the other side of the world... I would be leaving my friends and family , my well paid job and my apartment I had bought.

Basically it seemed like just a fantasy and I'd be really stupid to up and leave and drop everything and risk it all.

It was at this time I got into reading a few books, mainly because I had turned my life around from drinking, smoking slot and got really into exercise. One of the books I was recommended was think and grow rich.

I remember reading it and getting to the point where you write down your goals and a sum of money and what you will do in exchange for that.

I did this, but more importantly I went to my laptop and emailed a few contacts I had about designing their websites if they were looking. Two of them got back within half an hour , and one the following the day. The work done on them gave me enou to buy a ticket and enough to last me 3 months work. Within 3 months I was on my way... 2 years later I'm still here and well... Life is amazing. No regrets.

Now... I'm not saying the book, or any magic made this happen... But that si ple step of getting of my butt there and then and doing something was what caused the chain of events.

That is what I think is the secret, thinking of something and manifesting it through immediate action, no matter how small... That small action makes your idea born into reality. That's the secret I've taken from the book.

That's the secret. Hill said when it hits you it will change your life forever, just as it's changed yours. Why? Because you focussed first on what you were going to give others (in this case better websites) and in return you were paid money and other riches: self esteem, confidence, positive attitude etc.

The secret is so, so simple but so, so hard for people to understand if all they're thinking about is themselves. Even now people on this site dispute this with ideas like visualisation, believe and receive etc. Those are part of the system Hill developed but underpinning it all is the basic tenet to serve others and in return name your price.

If anyone can counter this by showing how "rich" they have become thinking otherwise please share their experience. I bet there isn't one person on this post who considers themselves rich because if they did they wouldn't be on here speculating about the secret.

To be rich (in all ways) you must give and you must make other people your focus, not yourself. It boils down to logic - improve someone's situation and receive something in return. Then you will be rich in so many ways including money.

I cannot speak for others on this site but the fundamental reason why I'de not made it in life was fear and self interest. I've been too afraid to act, take risks etc and also almost solely focussed on making money without giving a great deal of thought to how I'd benefit others to deserve this money. This is the society we live in: something for nothing. once I stopped focussing on my fears and started thinking about how my professional skills could benefit others I've gone self employed, helped businesses and made more money than I've made in all my life. I know giving is the secret because I'm proving it.

what I think we do today (given the cultural and social conditions)...

The secret is "IDEAS". The secret is simply having an idea. Everyone has ideas, and good ones at that. However, if you don't see ideas as valuable you will never act upon the steps the book lays out.

But, after reading the book and understanding what it takes to become wealthy, once you get that "IDEA" it will strike you like lightening and you'll have what it takes to succeed with it.

He mentions quite frequently how simple ideas were what made the many men in the book fortunes.

Simply put, the secret is having an idea worth something and then turning it into a desire, having faith in it, gaining the specialized skills for it, etc...

It IS ideas actually. "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve." What else does the mind conceive other than the idea that can spawn you a fortune?

The idea can be an original creative idea, or an innovation off of an existing idea, but in the end, without the IDEA to make something happen, then you are skipping the "mind can conceive" part of the secret Hill shares with us.

Haha I'm not disagreeing with you that the POWER lies in that big red word you've pointed out here. That is where the power is, in the human mind, which does all of the thinking.

The famous sentence goes as this "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe in, it can achieve"....

Now the key word is "Conceive"... when you conceive something, you don't "formulate" it.

The title "Think and Grow Rich" uses the word "Think" like it's a verb, when in reality that's not the secret. The secret is to understand the POWERFUL subconscious/spiritual side of ourselves and allow the thinking to become more of a receiving station than a sending station.

Thinking is the power of course, but the SECRET is in the conception rather than the formulation.

When you use THINK like it's a verb, you're interfering with your smarter self because the conscious mind limits itself constantly.

Using the steps in TAGR you can open yourself up to CONCEIVE the ideas you need. Follow the steps in TAGR will give you the ability to do that.

Of course you have to also take into account the very first thing he mentions in the video in regards to the "Spiritual" side of things.

I'm not here to preach to anyone, I have my beliefs and I know others have theirs. I'm a highly spiritual person and have recently read a great book called "Power of the Soul" by John Holland.

Anyways, it has helped me align myself with the more intuitive soul. To summarize the book, he basically explains how a person is merely a soul experiencing a physical existence using the body as its tool. The book is about gaining a higher consciousness, hearing the intuitive guidance, and ultimately listening to what you learn from INSIDE of you.

At the end of TAGR, he mentions this Sixth Sense (and even in the video mentions that he searched for the spiritual forces), which I honestly believe sheds light on the "clue" he's talking about.

The clue is really simple. If you learn to connect with yourself, learn to believe and have faith in your own inner guidance, CONCEIVE THE IDEA, and adhere to the guidance of your sixth sense (soul) towards getting it done, then there is NOTHING you cannot achieve.

Yeah, coulda been shorter I guess, LOL. I started typing and that's what came out before I stopped. Thanks for the reply though.

      CliffsNotes version:

Thoughts are things... and are just as "real" as any physical thing.

Nowadays, spirituality/self-awareness, forward-thinking sciences (like quantum physics) and more agree - and offer proof - that absolutely everything, physical and non-physical, is made of the same "stuff" - basically energy vibrating at different frequencies, though there is a bit more to it than that.

Being "real things," thoughts can - and do - affect every physical thing, influence its creation and more. The kind of thoughts you put out there, what you focus on, and how you act according to your thoughts, directly impacts what you get back. Put another way...

You get what you focus on, in one form or another. Focus on negatives, scarcity, lack, gaining at the expense of others, etc., and that's what you'll get back. Focus on positives, abundance, creating value and serving others, etc., and that's what you'll get back - in greater and greater amounts as you build momentum.

It's a cumulative thing... and "like attracts like." Yes, there is something to all that "Law of Attraction" stuff and the like.

Hope this version is a bit more digestible, although it leaves out some things!

The answer lies in the sentence - "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

Chris made some great points. Profound life changes come from deep within, and this process can be as simple or as complex as we want to make it.

That's why the quote from TGR holds so much truth. If you're able to focus on your goal and create it within the mind, then you'll be able to actualize what you desire. However, if you don't have the ability to see your goal clearly, then it's going to be much more difficult to bring about.

That's why I believe creative visualization is so powerful. It allows you to internalize your goals so that you naturally begin to realize them as a part of your being.

Visualization doesn't have to be about "The Secret" or the LOA. However, visualization is an incredibly powerful tool for influencing the mind. Business people use it as well as artists, athletes, and psychologists. The power of visualization lies in psychology and physiology; you don't have to change your belief system to effectively use it.

There is so much to be said about the practice of creative visualization, which makes it difficult to do it any justice here. It's what I believe to be at the core of TGR. Every successful person has found their way to this practice, even if they call it something different.

Mental movies, mental imagery, theater of the mind, imagination - whatever you want to call it, it's the most powerful thing you can learn to influence and manage your mind on its deepest levels

When you really read all this books, you will find out that they all talk about faith and God. The real secret to success is written in the bible, read it from cover to cover and you will find it out. Be open and don't follow men laws, but what it really means.

Success is the result of your action. Your action is always depended on your ability to multiply what you have, and that everything must be earned, because there is no free ride.

Think and grow rich may misunderstand from many people. I think that you must think first for what you want and what you need to do to get the results followed by massive action. That there are also new skills that needs to be learned and when hold through and believe in yourself that you will make it happen no matter how many time you will fail, than you will succeed with the new skills you learned from your failure, and when success arrives so will the money.

But the biggest mistake people are doing is, that they only think and miss to take action, and without action there is no results nor wealth.

Stick with that epiphany. We get back in this world what we put out, in every single way: spiritually, emotionally, financially. That's the nature of reality and that's what Hill/Carnegie etc understood long before scientists began to find real evidence for this.

Have you read any Lynne MacTaggart books? I'd really recommend The Field, The Intention Experiment and The Bond if not. These are cutting edge science without the new age speculative BS.

Most of people who are telling they know the "Secret" just have nothing to say about this. 99.99% will try to sell you something and this is their "real secret".
The secret of "Secret" for everybody is in a core believing in something you really want to happen.
No room for doubts at all!!!
Why 99.99% of people fail in manifestation of their "Secret"?
Because they do not believe it can happen!
Or, to say more correct, they try to force themselves to believe , but have some doubts that overweight these attempts to believe.
So, if you want something and do not believe it can happen, it looks like pushing gas and break pedals simultaneously.
    The result?
    Car is moving nowhere!
    Breaks are burning!
    Driver is very disappointed!

You are describing mastering positive emotions which is key to achieving any goal. It's proven science now that thoughts change matter at a subatomic level and eventually on a macro level (if anyone disputes this then read up on the extraordinary research of Robert Jahn and Eizabeth Targ). If you think about something with sufficient intention it will manifest physically. The nature of thought does not judge whether it's something you want or don't want hence why Hill makes it clear you must learn to tune your mind to positive thoughts to get more of what you want and less of what you don't. Part of that process in moving to positive thoughts is taking the focus off yourself and stop thinking in terms of 'me', 'I', 'mine' etc and start thinking 'you'. Again, research has shown that people who think in terms of 'me', I etc live shorter lives. We are all connected, quite literally and by nurturing those connections with others we expand. Think about Hills 13 steps and what they're aimed at. You might think they're aimed at you but they are not. They are aimed at empowering you to deliver service to others.

Hill said in recorded lecture whilst discussing PMA, and I quote "we are now rubbing shoulders with the great master key to success...If ever you should be unfortunate enough to find yourself feeling sorry for yourself stop right there and then and look for someone less fortunate than you and start immediately to help them".

      Andrew,

What do you think of this :

your in your car heading to a specific place.

considering you really want to just park quickly ( "law of Attraction") , Quantum Physics (everything is connected atom to atom), you can effect the outside world (with Internal Mental Forecasting - Goals and thinking and feeling what you want )

as you drive, your in tune with all this. you drive naturally at a certain pace, making turns that seem right, with positive thoughts along the way... your "in the flow " , so by the time you arrive a spot is available.

you received and sent somehow that connection?

can you duplicate it so it happens more often? Recent research says happy people are successful, not the other way around!

Maybe it's best to believe that, since being "in flow" has the "living in the present and accepting whatever comes" attitude?

The secret is in the 'model' of success. The success principles are not the actions you take but the mindset you create coupled with the actions you take.

I began creating a set of recorded techniques to help me program my mind for success based on the most successful models of goal setting success - I am now turning this into a product to help others achieve success too. This was my original goal after all!

Drill down for me. What is your definition of Model?

I consider it a "feedback loop".
Between the mind and the action.

ever hear of the LED Traffic warnings and how it applies here?

driving on the freeway, see the speed your going, quick feedback to change behavior for good results (no ticket, be safe, etc..,)

Are Goals built for this feedback loop, or are they too far out, to unachievable that we lose the Positive Feedback and beat ourselves up? I wonder

It all depends on the specific model you follow really... You are right, it is a feedback loop between experience, perception, and action/reaction.

Typically what we experience creates our perception, then based on our perception of our immediate reality we act/react in a certain way which creates additional experience, feeding more perception, and so on.

The idea of positive thinking, controlling your mind, and directing it towards what you want needs to happen on all levels. You must enhance your perception of your everyday reality so that your experiences become more positive and then you can and will act/react in a more positive way.

If someone cannot purposefully inject positiveness into this cycle then they can't expect to get it back because the cycle is really on autopilot and is continuously turning.

As far as goals go... it depends on your way of setting and achieving them! If you set them in a way that challenges and holds you accountable, and you complete your challenges one at a time, you'll build up momentum from one goal to the next.

I think many people bite off more than they can immediately chew... it's ok to have GRAND dreams, but you can't achieve it all at once. It's about incremental and measurable progress that you can hold yourself accountable towards and use to build momentum with.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4821373].message }}

          *****************************************

good points- "scale down" your goals.

find what you can do, reward it, and garner the momentum and confidence to continue, and not give up?

          for example :

Schedule in to do 3 hours of work. you don't do it.
so next day, try 2 hours.

better to reward the small, rather than punish the failure.

At long last i understand the secret. Remember, it ceases to become a secret when you're ready to receive it. Therefore some may dispute what I'm about to write and that's fine.

The secret begins with having a goal: knowing where you're going. That is the most important part of any achievement. Without direction you go nowwhere and you'll notice it's something that every one of Hill's examples shares in common. His goal was to give his son hearing, Edwin Barnes' goal was to go into business with Edison, Ford's goal was to build the first 8 cylinder engine block, Charles Schwab's was to create US steele. Etc, etc. Second, the secret to riches is about giving. Hill, Carnegie, Ford, Barnes all gave something in return for what they wanted. They served others. No man can get rich unless he enriches others. Unless you're providing something useful to others in return for their money you won't get rich. Third, they absolutely refused to allow external circumstances to stand in the way of their success. Barnes had no money and no credentials to work with Edison but that didnt stop him. Ford was told by his engineers that what he wanted to do was impossible. Doctors told Hill that it shouldnt be possible that his son could hear. The list goes on. Tied into this they were obsessed with their goal. Success was the only option. They poured all their focus, THOUGHT and energy into it. They worked together with other equally motivated men (mastermind principle) to achieve their goal.

The secret in a way is the whole book because it covers a number of principles. But ultimately it comes down to this: people who get rich get rich by having a goal, becoming obsessed with that goal and serving others to get what they want. If you do that you'll become what you've been thinking about faster than you could ever imagine.

      Good luck

About as clear as any I've seen.

I read the book when I was 18, again at 22, again every few years....

It wasn't until I was in my mid forties that I think I finally got it.

I agree with Jonathan here as none of these things can happen without you deciding that you are actually going to carry out the steps it takes to be successful! Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich

    ... the secret

    He says
The secret to success is very simple but you'll have to read the Book to find out what it is!

Hill felt readers would benefit most if they discovered it for themselves. Although most readers feel that he never explicitly identified this secret, he offers these words about 20 pages into the book:

    If you truly desire.....

... so you will need to read the book over and over again to get it!

The "secret" is on page 204 in the "Fawcett Crest" edition. It says:

Anybody can wish for riches, and most people do, but only a few know that a definite plan, plus a burning desire for wealth, are the only dependable means of accumulating wealth.
That means you need the following 3 things:

    1. A definite plan. ONE business that you're going to put all of your time and energy into.

    2. A burning desire. You become obsessed with making that business grow and make money.

    3. Persistence. Never giving up. If you can't go through, go over. Can't go over, go around. Can't go around, go under. Keep going until you figure it out.

He gives many examples of these 3 principles and that's the "secret" of the book. It took me years of reading it until it finally jumped out of the pages at me. It's in almost every chapter of the book.

    I hope it helps you.

I Think that the book reveals the secret over and over again not only in the instructions from Napolean Hill but also in the stories of the successful people mentioned. There's a saying that "Success Leaves Clues" but I Think that if we start with a "Needy" mind we tend to miss what we are trying to get.

Bob Proctor made a statement one time that kind of sums it up. He said we don't need to slow down but we need to "calm" down. Take a deep breath before we read and understand that if we keep doing things the same way then we are sure to get the same results. Calm down and absorb the book. Become a part of it and the secrets will be revealed to you.

Step 1: You must have a definite chief aim or goal.

Step 2: You must reinforce that chief aim or goal with persistent repetition until it becomes a burning desire (a super strong belief that you can accomplish it) the answer rests in what he did with his son.

The book Think And Grow Rich doesn't have a secret. Saying there was a secret hidden in the book was simply good marketing, a teaser...a reason to buy the book. That claim of a secret, the story of Andrew Carnegie, and the greatest title in the world....made that book a best seller.

The book simply lists the qualities that most wealthy people have. There are no techniques in the book. There are stories of people that possessed these personality traits...and how these traits helped them succeed.

Here is the problem with how we see the book. There is nothing wrong with the book.... but the vast majority of people simply don't possess the traits needed to achieve wealth.

And reading about how the quality of persistence can almost guarantee wealth...does not make us persistent. Reading about the quality of desire...doesn't generate the needed level of desire in us.

For example, Napoleon Hill died penniless. He knew all about the qualities needed to be successful in business, but he didn't have those qualities himself..

So....boys and girls......If you already possess the qualities needed to rise above the rest of the world in business, and you read Think and Grow Rich, you'll think "Yup. That sounds about right".

But actually changing your personality, to acquire permanent personality traits? becoming a different person, one that will ultimately succeed? I've never seen that happen.

If you already posses the traits listed in Think And Grow Rich, you don't need to read the book. It's a great book, but you don't need to read it.

If you aren't that person already? Reading the book won't make you into one.
And the entire reason the title Think And Grow Rich sells so well, is that the title suggests that by merely thinking...which takes no physical effort, you'll automatically get rich.

If the title was "Work Really Hard For Twelve Hours A Day, For A Decade... Become Obsessive, Add A Little Luck, And You Have A Good Chance At Being Successful"....nobody would buy the book.

How To Win Friends And Influence People is another incredibly good book on "What personality traits you need so that people automatically like you and trust you".

It's why no diet book is titled "Just Eat Less And You'll Lose Weight". It has to be positioned as effortless and painless.

And nothing sounds more effortless and painless than Think And Grow Rich.

I have to say that one of the Principles that I learned from "Think And Grow Rich" (which was explained by Copywriter Gary Bencivenga at his Website MarketingBullets.com) ... Literally changed my life. Or more specifically, the challenges of Life that I have been experiencing.

For those of you who don't "believe" in "Personal Development Books" and/or don't read them ... You're missing out on a whole wealth of knowledge that can make you significantly more successful. As it's been said: "Knowledge Is Power." (And you can gain a great deal of knowledge by reading these kinds of books.)

Jonathan; What principle from Think And Grow Rich was that? (If I may ask).

by the way, I should mention that I have 6 different editions of Think And Grow Rich, including two leather bound editions. I read books like this all the time. My library is my treasure.

In fact, I think Think And Grow Rich and How To Win Friends And Influence People are the two best personal development books ever written.

My point is that Think And Grow Rich cannot change you as a person. It can reveal you to yourself...it can explain why you are successful.....and it can give the rest of the readers "Hope" (The entire purpose of the self help field).

But it can't make lazy people persistent. It can't make a bad person good, it can't make a weak willed person strong willed. It can give the weak willed person "Hope". But it can't change their basic core personality.

"Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit."

Personally I don't think it has much to do with a Person's "personality." We're all different and unique -- and that's a good thing. IMO the most important component (for being a successful Entrepreneur etc.) is a Person's Mindset. When they believe in their Dreams (etc.) and that they can be successful no matter what, that goes a long way to being successful.

          Jonathan:

In every biography of successful business people I've read, the person had a burning desire to succeed, determination, a strong independence streak, and an entrepreneurial mindset very early in life.

In some cases there was terrible failure at first, in some cases a terrible personal tragedy, in some cases abject poverty as a youth...but they always had the seed of greatness inside them from the beginning.

That's why I said books like TAGR can reveal things about you. But they reveal things that already exist.

For example, single mindedness. Moderation may be the key to happiness, but it isn't the key to monetary success. Who gets wealthy? People who are obsessed with their business.

A trait I didn't see in TAGR that I've noticed that all great salespeople (switching gears a bit here) have is a bulletproof ego. It isn't failure that doesn't bother them, but rejection...which is a different thing.

And one thing I can say for sure is that all people that build wealth are responsible for their own actions. They take responsibility for what happens to them, they don't blame others (or even circumstances) for setbacks. They never play the victim.

When I hear people talking about faith, hope, and a secret ....they are relying on something apart from themselves for their success. And that fact dooms them to repeat failures.

The only way to control your future is to take responsibility for it.

And the title TAGR (like The Secret) appeals to the people that are hoping for some external thing to change...without them having to change themselves.

Nearly every successful person I know has read Think And Grow Rich. But I'm convinced that they are the kind of people that would have succeeded anyway. The book just explained to them what they unconsciously knew already.

          By the way.....

Maybe "personality" is the wrong word. "Core traits" is better.

What kind of person are you at your very core? That's pretty much the same your entire life.

I've never been successful (for example) at making a lazy salesperson ambitious. Because, at their core...they are lazy. And any motivation I give them...dies quickly, as they revert to their true selves.

I believe that this is true. But another way to put is (less poetically) is that change brings opportunity. And the great fortunes sometimes came from opportunities created in time of crisis.

For example, when I was prospecting for sales, I asked questions that told me if there was a recent change in their life. Any change is good...it promotes action.

In fact, the Status Quo is the enemy of opportunity. Being satisfied with how things are is the enemy of change, innovation, and invention.

          I enjoy talking with you.

For some reason, I can't get this quote out of my mind. In the movie Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne is being trained. And the trainer says "The training is nothing. The will is everything!" And even though it was just a line in a movie, I knew a great truth was being told.

            Hi Kay.

Many times that's true ... However sometimes a simple change in Mindset can be enough for a Person to begin seeing/realizing the positive aspects of a "problem" or "challenge" (etc.) Thanks. : )

Claude -- just a couple of comments.

Absolutely -- I couldn't agree more. (That used to be me many years ago by the way.)

Something I learned from a ... (Wait for it) ... Personal Development book (specifically "The Success Principles" by Jack Canfield) ... Is the concept of taking 100% responsibility for everything that happens to you -- similar to what you were saying. Because, as it's been said in the book: "When you do take 100% responsibility you can re-create and un-create anything at will..." (or something along those lines). At first I kind of found that difficult however now it's just part of me.

I'm going to be really honest here - the majority of people who lecture me about "believing" in 'personal development' etc aren't earning much money. They have quotes out the wazoo about 'success' and talk about the various 'secrets'.

When it comes to business and work - the only knowledge I want is how to efficiently earn the money I need to survive. Once that is done, I get on with my life doing things I really enjoy.

Napoleon Hill not only died penniless but had problem getting TAGR published because it was nothing more than a rehash of a previous book. Just as with "The Secret" - the title sold the book....mostly many years after it was published.

If reading 'personal development' and 'belief' books helps you move ahead in business or in life, I think that's great. But if you are in the same place you were last year or the year before...are they really helping? Are you earning more and living better because of reading these books? Sometimes I wonder.

Don't mean to be trite but....

While I agree that adversity builds strength...you have to PLANT those seeds to harvest any results. That means letting go of the 'seeds' of failure and heartache and turning the adversity (can't trust spellcheck) into something that HAS benefit.

Look at me getting all philosophical....don't' worry, won't last long.

I believe he explicitly stated the secret in other places, like in this video below.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GCaEZscfvA

The secret is: "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

He said he got it from Andrew Carnegie. Take note of his mention of "spiritual forces" with which we're all blessed.

So that phrase has a deeper meaning than just practically applying your thoughts to an objective world through actions. Yes actions are key but these guys are talking of something more profound than that.

They're saying that we "see" in our reality what be truly believe. So if you work hard on the action front but have limiting beliefs then all your hard work may not bear any fruits. If you believe it will be a struggle then that is exactly what you'll get.

The implication is that what we "see" as our external reality is somewhat subjective. There are forces already set in motion in the formless world based on your subconscious thoughts and these precede any actions you take in the tangible world. If you have limiting beliefs that are counter to your actions (to get rich for example) then you could struggle for a long time with nothing to show for it. Conversely if you have an unwavering belief that you can achieve what you've set out to achieve then it actually gets easier to achieve it.

So in essence we have a formless world and a tangible world and we have to pay attention to both.

The secret is ``stick-to-it-ive-ness``... don´t quit... believe in yourself...but just wanting something is not enough... you must work toward your goal or dream, you must plan and then carry out your plan... when it does not work, attack it from a different perspective but never give up because the day you give up is the day you lose...

I just started reading the ebook version and I'm not sure if this is how the actual book is but the word "DESIRE" shows up in CAPS in the first 3 chapters that I read. Is it really a secret though? How many times have we all heard if we dream it, it will come, those that want it more will get what they desire! They had a dream, a desire to make it no matter what and that did whatever they needed to do to get what they wanted. Can we do the same? Of course we can, but how many people will actually sacrifice what do what is needed? How many of you (especially if you have failed at something in the past) actually and honestly can say that they worked 110% on trying to complete their goals. I'm in the same place as a lot of you, BUT hopefully not for long as I have the "DESIRE" . . .

I'm on my third reading of this book now.
I believe the secret is this:

(knowing with absolute clarity what you want, and
having a strong enough desire that it will drive you to
take whatever actions are necessary, with singleminded focus
      to achieve that goal)

Napoleon Hill's best book was and always will be:

Grow Rich with Peace of Mind

Yet this isn't the book most people read. Perhaps because it's a more complex version of Think and Grow Rich?

I think the secret is only a secret because people don't want to believe it. your mind, specifically your unconscious mind, has amazing power to direct your life and lead you to make the decisions that will draw you toward what ever you focus on. Obviously there's a bit more to it than that but in a nut shell, the title is the give away.

There really isn't ONE secret in life.

There are dozens of "secrets" you must execute at the same time. Looking for that ONE secret will not get you to your goal.

Think in terms of the 20 secrets you must execute to get what you want in life.

I too have read Think and Grow rich several times. The formula works. However, it must be applied/reviewed on a continuing basis or, like happened to me, you may revert back to your old way of thinking. In 1977 I followed the book to the letter and typed out my plan on an old Smith Corona typewrite (now an antique). I used AUTOSUGGESTION to program my mind. After a few months I got tired of repeating the plan over and over and eventually packed the typed plan up in a box for a move to a new city. Three years later I was sorting stuff out in the attic and found the box with my plan. I read the plan while sitting on the attic floor and to my amazement I was living the plan to the exact date I had planned. Family, house, car, boat, plane, business, etc. I was absolutely stunned to realize that the principles in TGR had worked for me. Now here's the downside. I packed the plan back up and left it in the attic. 20 years later, after several moves, I could not find the plan. Nearly everything I had accomplished had slowly slipped away. I was back to square one. Think and Grow Rich is not a one time deal. You have to keep your plan in front of you often and continually refine and update it or you will drift back to your old way of thinking like I did. This brings me to the purpose of this forum topic, the "secret". I THINK the secret is "THINK". It is the first word in the title of the book, THINK and Grow Rich. It is how we THINK that will determine our future. Proverbs 23:7 confirms this. As a man THINKS, so will he be. We can choose how we want to think. We have free will. Sometimes success can make us lazy. I became a lazy thinker after achieving success the first time and began to drift off course. I created a new plan in 1999 which has not been put in the attic. My new plan is a living plan of action. Not a one time plan. So, twice I have started from scratch and twice succeed Think your plan often and the plan will eventually manifest itself without you even realizing it. Maybe one day, like it happened to me, you will look back and see how you were able to THINK yourself into success. The principles in Think and Grow Rich teach us what to think. What we think is what we become.

Most people not Understand the concept clearly,,,,,

Many people have difficulty understanding NO ACTION part
    It seems so weird
    BUT

Did your actions help you till now ?? Does everyone take the "Right action " ???

    NO...

The law of attraction is "trusting the Universe"

That the Universe KNOWS whats best for you and will bring it for you ONLY if you TRUST it !!

"if you have faith as small as a mustard seed"

Then the action will not be an issue as it will come all together in a strange way of coincidences that may surprise you or even freak you put...you may put it down to "coincidences" but you will soon understand that the UNIVERSE delivers if you trust implictly.... then your actions will be so smooth and not full of effort and huff and puff ....

and you dont need the law of attraction if you trust god or the universe

    when you ask
    KNOW that its done

    simple
    but difficult for skeptics

    Trust means having no doubt

    KNOWING is trust
    knowing that it is done

You need to let go of worldly logic and theories to make it work !!!

You also need to know what you want and ask properly

I used the LOA to attract my car and my house

Both came to me in the form of loans
I was happy and overjoyed in the beggining
But few years on as the home loans became a burden i thought over my "asking"....i never thought of loans... I just wanted the house fast and "no matter what "....thats what i asked and thats what i got infact even in the exact neighbourhood

Now I know how to ask ..

try small stuff and go to the big things as you succeed

Recently i saw a video about a guru saying Law of attraction sucked and was really really bad .......... NOT because it did not work !!

But because it works always !!!! and there is only one direction it works....It brings you what you FEEL !!!!!!

    He said......

Its so unfair that when you are negative , you think and feel negative and then you get more negative things in your life and then you become more negative and you start thinking and feeling more negativity and....so on........and on......

so it seems BS to people who cannot get out of the vicious "mental and emotional " negative thinking processes !!!!

Changing your vibrations and emotions WILL do the trick !!

    YES IT WORKS
    LIKE MAGIC

I have read "To Assume the Feeling of your wish to be rich as if it has already been manifest" is the true emotional, visual method one must practice. Having that vibration of already being successful (even though you are not yet) is what attracts the circumstances into your life creating the equal desires.
Visually and emotionally it's not easy to do... thats what makes it simple yet profoundly difficult at the same time. Having Faith in your higher feelings and believing in your limitless self is the key.

The secret isn't really a secret. When you find your calling/passion/purpose in life, you'll know the secret without putting it into words. In the actual book, it's basically a burning desire to persist until you get what you desire.

I recommend reading the book about 10 times and highlighting it up like crazy. Then, you'll not only know the secret, but the other 100 secrets buried in the words and you'll start to put it into practice without realizing it.

personality is critical..most people don't build businesses .. and the business tends to reflect the personality of the founder or current ceo ..though GE probably still hass Jack welsh personality ..

because most people chase money .. and try to supress their personality it really become hard for them to build success.. in a business.. if Tiger woods had not had one real personality off the course .. and a completely personailty sold to the public .. he would probably have hit the bilion net worth point by now or 5 years ago ..

ford called his company ford motors .. walt disney .. Oprah just spelled hername backwards ..

most very wealthy people never really fit in to the crowd growing up and where unable to hide their personalities ..or supress them.. like so many do ..

Without Doubt Think and Grow Rich is one of the most important books of our time.
My interpretation through re reading Napoleons classic at least 5 times is belief in your self, your project, your dreams and your own ability to make those dreams a reality. Never give up and take action towards your goals and don't be distracted by naysayers or next shiny objects. Spend 100% of your time on your goals and you will reach them. Don't waste time on things that are not driving you closer to your dreams. Take continuous action and those dreams will become reality faster than you can think.

the 100 percent responcability thing .. makes a lot of sense when you grasp how are perceptions and judgements create our concept of reality ..we are mostly always working with a small piece of the puzzle when it come to events.. and when we remember something we are more likely remembering the events according to how we remembered them last time ..

to function as a human we depend on patterns that we repeat over and over again buit from childhood and borrowed from our parent and those around us at a young age ..

our response to thing is based on these patterns ..in order to change the outcomes we get .. we need to understand the patterns and change our responses rather than revert to default habit ..so by taking 100 percent responsability we don't have to beat ourselves up ..we have to learn to figure out what is happening and change how we respond to it .. ifwe want to change ..

no it can be a harsh and brutal process to change these patterns.. and honestly look at why you do the things you do ..

the earlier you learn to do it the better ..and some people or most as they get older get married have kids build a career get into lots of debt ..tend not to be able to get out of those patterns ..that why very successful people either start out young ..or after financial ruin .. or jub loss ..

when the patterns get forcibly broken and you can't simple change a job and pick up where you left off .

but more people end up destroyed than pull out of it

i think the current focus on passion has been misleading ..it is more to do with finding you element or environment that puts you in the best line to build success .

Interesting point. : ) Thanks Odahh.

In many respects Hill was kind of a "reporter." In the sense that he organized/reported the Success Philosophy that he learned from W. Clement Stone. And, because of that, we now have one of the most influential and empowering Personal Development book ever published.

The Life of being a successful Entrepreneur isn't always easy. However I'm certain that if Napoleon Hill had more time -- incorporating all the principles he learned and organized -- he would have been "successful."

        Jonathan;
The two times (in a long life) that Hill had money was right after Laws Of Success was published, and right after Think And Grow Rich was published. Hill was a consistently bad businessman, and his start ups never lasted long.

Like you said, he was really an author and reporter. His subject just happened to be success. You see, you can study the habits and traits of wealthy people...even understand them well...without actually having them yourself.

There are authors today that write biographies and how to books based on incredibly wealthy businesspeople.

For example, in selling over four decades, I understand the way the customer thinks (usually). I can explain what they are thinking and the reason they are thinking it....but I almost never actually share the same thought...or even share the same thinking mode.

Think And Grow Rich was a book that was very very similar to several other books written at the time. In fact, from the years 1900-1940, there were dozens of self help/wealth authors that wrote the same things. I have a few books written before TAGR that are almost the identical book, by a different author. Orison Swett Marden wrote several books that are interchangeable with Hill's books.

The genius of TAGR with the ideal title and the story of his interview with Andrew Carnegie. Also, Hill included several celebrities in his examples. Smart writing.

By the way, W. Clement Stone got rich because he sold an easy to understand product (accident insurance), created a very easy to memorize presentation, that he used himself in the field.....and recruited thousands of agents He did much of this before Think And Grow Rich was written. Also, Stone had a work ethic that was almost unparalleled, and he instilled that in his sales force. A billionaire made out of cold calling low priced insurance policies.

see it's a scale thingand it bothers me when the same word Entrepreneur is blanketly used to describe anyone who starts and runs a business ..it's like lumping everyone in who has a job into the term employee..and thinking that there is a master skill set that would make any employee a great employee ..

so it is really meaningless when you lump the guys who started google in with someone who own a food truck .. both where entrepreneurs but totally different skill sets ..

this is where the dark cloud is right now ..because food truck type oppertunities are exploding ..with that small scale people can make 500-4000 a month or more but not build a company to sell amd make a fortune from ..while the next big thing might have 1-3 people at the head and make the hundreds or thousands of employyees in at the start rich over a few years ..

but the literature/motivation .. 90 percent of it is trying to aim people for the small sliver .. and ignore the better way to earn a living that most are searching for ..

instead of building a big business ..or a business at all.. hill would have been better of writing books doing workshops and personally coaching .. like many in the motivation industry do today .. as the books are more advertisments for their tape course /workshops/ coaching programs .

you might not be n the elite .. 1 percent ..but you can be way ahead of the masses ..

        P.S.

Claude -- Although Napoleon may have been an ineffective Businessperson what he accomplished (IMO) was simply amazing and a great success in and of itself:

That being spending many, many years studying all of the most successful, influential, and powerful People of the time (including Henry Ford and Thomas A. Edison) ... And understanding everything that made them successful. Then taking all that knowledge and organizing it into a Success Philosophy that anyone can follow.

It depends from people to people. What they understand and in what situation they are? The title "Think & Grow Rich" is not only about riches. Our thinking can be applied in any circumstances.

How we think and what we think is very important for all areas of our life.
