I agree totally but, unfortunately, such a friend is so hard to find. But I'll never give up trying to find that special friend.

So many people get caught up in how many "friends" they have on certain social media sites. Friends? I guess that depends on how you define the word.

I can count my friends on one hand. If you are lucky, you can too.

A true friend is rare these days.

Even in Internet Marketing area, there are tons of fake people..."I will be your friend....if you buy my product!"

People are interested in "what's in it for them", and the whole Web 2.0 "me, me, me" online stuff, it's making us more self-centered than before.

    Nice Hubbard quote.

When you have a true friend, you know it. There's an unspoken bond which forms gradually over time. As for # of friends I agree with you Andy, a select few friends are all that one needs.

Don't forget the best friend you could ever have: yourself. Most seek friends but are their own worst enemy. Make friends with yourself. Love yourself. Treat yourself with care and you won't have a problem making friends.

      Excellent.

The best relationship starts with yourself first.

    Hello:

    ...Elbert Hubbard...

I came across his name recently in the autobiography of Conrad Hilton. The third hotel Conrad ever bought came with a set of his books called "Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great". The "great" included famous (living and historical) businessmen, statesmen, and philosophers as well as others.

The set made a great impression on Conrad. As he puts it (page 120):

"As a youth I was certainly proof against any attempts to make a reader out of me. But now that I was older, and vastly busier, I found a lot things I wished I knew."

"Not since my teenage discovery of Helen Keller had I sat still so long or been moved so profoundly as I was by Mr. Hubbard. He is, I am told, rather passe now and all I can say is, more's the pity."

(Conrad would have been in his early to mid-thirties. Also, "passe" should have the french acute accent on the "e", but I cannot type that.)

The book, "Be my Guest", was put in guest rooms and guests were free to take it with them. It was not sold. My copy was published in 1957 by Prentice-Hall, Inc.

The exact wording is as follows:

"This book is placed in the rooms of Hilton Hotels to provide entertaining reading for our guests. It is not for re-sale, but if you would like to take this copy, please feel free to do so."

    Caritas

P.S. What was Conrad's secret for success? Prayer, work, and a dream.
