Listening And Learning

Hi People,

Over the past couple of weeks I've realized something:

In order to progress in life (and keep evolving) you have to "empty your cup" (as they say in Zen) and listen to what other people are saying.

You have to literally stop thinking and start listening.

In the past I thought I had learned everything however nothing could be further than the truth. I think being open to learning is something that a person has to consciously choose. Many times you have to put aside your "beliefs" about something to be open to learning something new. (Something that you wouldn't have learned otherwise.)

One of my favourite quotations from Socrates is:

"True knowledge is knowing that you know nothing."

Life starts to become really exciting when you're start learning at a fast rate. So be open to this opportunity to start learning. : )

    hmm..

slightly different take but on the same page or at least same chapter ..

the key to learning is to accept there is a lot you don't know yet ..

Heh, very interesting, Jonathan. I agree, also - nice quote from Socrates, it is true. It's a great thing to sit and listen to people, understand their needs, understand why they feel like they feel, listen to their experience. These things can help you a lot, you earn experience on someone else's back, you can learn from others' mistakes, now that's a very important benefit.

EDIT BY MODERATOR: Why does your location say "Chicago" when your IP is in Romania?
I'm staying in Romania for a while but I'm from Chicago, is there a problem?

Emptying your cup is also important for releasing doubts and fears and negativity instilled as a result of past experiences. I know so many people who simply can't get ahead in business because they still live with the insecurities of a previous business that had gone belly-up. I often think if they can release the negativity of a past failure, they stand a much better chance of making a success in the future.

    Nice post.

The problem I have with emptying my cup is sometimes you have no control over what people may pour into it...after all, we all live in a state of constant collective hypnosis...hence suggestive advertising etc..I have a filled cup..to the brim ...with hapiness, acceptance, positivity,a willingness to learn, the courage to fail and visualizations of who i am and where i am going...

Thank You for the replies everyone. : ) Just going to comment on a couple of them:

      @ OZ Dude

I think the “meaning” (in my example/context) is that many times a person thinks they know everything about a subject- so much so- there’s nothing left for them to learn.

For me learning is a life long endeavour. As I once heard: “You can’t outlive your evolution.” Many people, however, think they’ve learned everything. In some aspects of life people are struck in The Matrix. They’re blinded. And, only people who have “evolved” (and been freed) can see it.

I’m not saying I’ve learned everything or whatever, however, I’ve realized that’s there so much more for me to learn. For instance my last couple of posts in this forum didn’t connect with anyone at all. : ) So there’s much more I can learn about communication.

Anyway, I think it’s good that you see yourself as being filled with happiness, acceptance, etc. OZ Dude. : )

      @ Terra K
I discovered a long time ago that the more I learn, the more I know that I don't know.

      Good point. That’s exactly how I feel. : )

    Nice thread!
Knowledge can easily be learn. There's a tons of information around you. Watching and listening is a way of observation. If you just observe everything in this world you'll know that even a piece of trash you can already gain some knowledge on it. Take note that no one knows everything. But we must try to learn everything that we can.

So true, people can't absorb every knowledge of the world. Everyday is a chance of learning.

I discovered a long time ago that the more I learn, the more I know that I don't know.

This has always kept me from assuming I already know a topic thoroughly whether in listening to someone or in my own reading.

I therefore eat the meat and spit out the bone. I won't starve myself just because something may have some bones in it.

Hi, there is power in listening, when you listen to a speech or to any statement you learn lot of thing. Through listening you learn and improved on your daily activity. If you stop to listen you stop learning Because without listening you can not learn.

It is quiet humbling that learning is a continuous indefinite process. Or is it not?
