Are You An Eagle or a Chicken?

Once upon a time, at a large mountainside there was an eagle nest with 4 large eagle eggs inside. One day, an earthquake rocked the mountain causing one of the eggs to roll down to a chicken farm, located in the valley below.

The chickens knew that they must protect the eagle egg. Eventually, the eagle egg hatched and a beautiful eagle was born. Being chickens, the chickens raised the eagle to be a chicken. The eagle loved his home and family but it seemed his spirit cried out for more.

One day, the eagle looked to the skies above and noticed a group of mighty eagles soaring. "Oh," the eagle cried, "I wish I could soar like those birds."

The chickens roared with laughter, "You cannot soar like those. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar." The eagle continued staring at his real family up above, dreaming that he could be like them.

Each time the eagle talked about his dreams, he was told it couldn't be done. That was what the eagle learned to believe. After time, the eagle stopped dreaming and continued to live his life as a chicken.

Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away.

Moral: You become what you believe you are. If you ever dream to become an eagle, follow your dreams, not the words of chickens.

That's OK. Still is a good story even if it is not yours.

As Talfighel said, it doesn't matter. You still get credit for it

    Arun,

    Nice story and well said.

People want to reach their goals and dreams in life but let friends and family tell them that they can't. That is very sad.

    Here's another thought:

The old saying is still true...

Birds of the feather flock together. If you hang around losers, you will become one of them too.

Interesting. The variation of this story that I heard the eagle flew off, changed his mind mid-flight out of fear of the outside world, then was shot by the farmer who "thought" the eagle was a predatory hawk coming after his chickens.

The lesson there was that you can't change how you might appear to others due to situational circumstance.

Anyway, that was from one of my early philosophy classes. I like your variation a lot more

Great story. Dreams can be real if we choose to decide and not let ourselves be deceived by the lies other people tell.

Take a shot at that dream and start risking and enjoy the ride once in a while.

Great story. Also reminds me that you have to want it enough. People can only hold you back if you let them.

I've heard this story before and it's an excellent demonstration of the power of belief.

Beliefs shape our emotions, which determine our actions. There are a few ways that beliefs are formed and reinforced and as the story displays, our environment is the probably the most persistent of them all.

It's one thing to occasionally hear someone tell you what your limitations are and another to constantly live surrounded by people who speak words of lack and limitation.

That's why it is crucial to distance yourself from people who complain too much.

Thanks for sharing this great story with everyone.

  • Arun, . . . I was so rooting for the Eagle. Now it turns out he's dead. I'm depressed.

Fortunately, we are not Eagles or Chickens at all, but wonderfully complex beings with infinite potential. How exciting is that?

Your parable is well taken. I am just having fun with the unfortunate story line. I'm telling you, . . . I was really pulling for that misplaced eagle. Darn!

Seriously, thanks for a good thought provoking post.

I used to be an Eagle but after having my wings plucked out by some fake Gurus who promised thousands but delivered nothing, I became a Chicken. God there must be something out there that will make me consistent income online!

I want to soar the skies again and see the views from top of the mountain instead of a chicken pen house.
