A Common Mistake I Have Stopped Making
Share on:

I’m fairly new to mobile marketing. In fact it was just about a month ago I bought a few WSO’s, and after many hours playing around with them and learning the ins and outs, I just started reaching out to potential clients last week. I wanted to share this in hopes that some other newbie out there (maybe even some non-newbies) will benefit from it.

The leads I have so far I have got from searching groupon deals in my area and finding all the sites offering deals that are not mobile.

There is a common mistake I think a lot of people make, and which I have certainly made in the past, but have resolved not to this time around. And boy is it making a difference!

The mistake I refer to is basically thinking like this (said as it would be in my mind for my scenario):

Sure, I want to offer this service, and know that companies can benefit from it. But why should they buy from me? I live in Austin, TX and there are MANY marketing companies in the area that have far more knowledge and experience than I do. And there are TONS more marketing folks out there scrubbing groupon every day for leads. So what are my chances? Pretty slim. But I need to make money, so I guess I’ll try it out and see what happens.

This time around I decided to keep in mind as I go thoughts of others that have started from virtually nothing and built massive success. For example, Michael Dell while in college decided he wanted to compete with HP and IBM. The result? One of the biggest and most successful multi-billion dollar tech companies in the world, started by a college nerd no one had ever heard of.

What then is to prevent me from getting results despite the current competitive landscape described above? Others have faced and overcome far greater challenges.

So I reached out to all the sites I found on groupon that do not currently have a mobile site. And guess what? This guy who just a month ago knew virtually nothing about mobile now has a few clients.

Ok, so here is the reason I am posting this right now.

I just got off the phone with a potential client that it turns out has actually been featured on Oprah, Martha Stewart, and Good Morning America. In the end I did not get the deal; it turned out the project was beyond my current scope and I decided I would rather gracefully bow out than try to get him into a solution that’s not best for him, and thus have an angry customer.

The point though is that this guy who’s been featured on all those shows responded to me and was interested in hearing what I have to offer.

Here’s my point:

You’d think that living in a city with so many dozens of marketing companies that a newbie one man operation would stand no chance at all. Wrong!

You’d think that with so many others are already using things like groupon to get leads, you would just be one more among the many and it would not be worth your time. Wrong!

You’d think that a company that has been featured on Oprah, Martha Stewart, and Good Morning America would either already have a mobile site, or have marketing companies beating down their door to help them go mobile. Wrong!

If any of these limiting thoughts have hindered you from taking massive action in the past, please let them hinder you no further!

May the force be with you.

This is what it's all about, doing what is best for the customer, even if it means gracefully tapping out when you are in over your head. Your reputationis worth more then a few bucks for a botched job. If you are going to take on the business make sure you can deliver as promised.

Glad to see what you are doing in mobile, and should be very inspriing to othres looking to get started in selling mobile websites to local businesses.

Earning bucks from the industry of mobile when there are large number of offerings to people makes it more complicated. The thing that matters is what we learn from previous deeds, and you are doing good. Show your leads what special you have and what more you can offer them compared to others.

Nice share Jedi, as an aspiring mobile marketer suffering from the same mind set you mentioned in your post.
