Serious - I just saw on a tv - a cartoon called Uncle Grandpa. WTF?? Seriously - WTF kind of crap are our kids watching now? I haven't seen anything that grossed me out like that in a while. Found it disgusting even though I only watched about 30 seconds (one of the characters was farting for most of the clip I saw). Couldn't watch any more of it. What happened to stuff like Looney Toones?

Looney Tunes is racist, and very name discriminates against loonies. You should be glad kids aren't watching. After all,

...generations of kids might never have been taught that Africans and Native Americans are dim-witted, foot-dragging savages (and sometimes cannibals), Jews are hook-nosed shysters, Mexicans are lazy, Italians are Mafioso, Germans are all Nazis, etc.

I know that's where *I* got all my racist bigoted ideas from when I was a kid. Shame on them.

      LOL, Steve!

I guess I got mine watching Betty Boop when I was just a wee little girl, like this one.

and if you liked that one, here's a whole bunch of banned ones for things like sexual harassment, drug use, racism, vulgarity, adult content, etc.

OK, #1? NO WAY! Then again,I am not surprised agenda driven people would name Fox News.
#2? Seinfeld was plenty #ist, but they DID have different people on, INCLUDING blacks.
#3? Looney tunes WAS racist. What took so long? I guess I did see through THAT garbage, then again, having known a number of rabbits and ducks, I NEVER found one that could act or talk!
#4? GIVE ME A BREAK! It wasn't racist AT ALL! Did ANYONE even know about Garys condition when that started?
#5? YEP, RACIST! BTW it was racist against straight conservative whites ALSO.
#7? I don't remember a case where they exploited that, other than to build the story line. I wouldn't call it racist.
#9? WHO KNOWS what tonto means? Some words, EVEN in different spanish dialects, can mean different things. The story is built on a ranger left for dead that is saved by an indian. BTW you can GUESS that Kemo Sabe can mean one who knows, since que means who is spanish, and sabe is from saber to know, but it shows it is NOT spanish. It is no secret that there has been some spanish influence, but that is all. STILL, NOT generally racist!
#10? YEAH, stupid, but I think he only lucked out most of the time.
#11? YEP RACIST! Like a lot of hanna barberra!
#16? It had a TON of stereotypes. It did NOT make the US look good. It took the WORST of the 70s, and mixed it with several stereotypes, and just let it run.
#18? It is a FAMILY GUY spin off! WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?
#19? You're kidding, RIGHT? A caucasion can't be ANY good? This show said a LOT bad about the wild west, and a lot of good about china. HOW is that racist?
#20? YEP, RACIST! OUTSIDE OF ISLAM, it has offended pretty much EVERYONE!
#22? YEP, the show was about an arrogant guy walking through life stating things as he saw them, though it was rarely reality. Of course some of that was racist.
#23? WHO KNOWS? A LOT of cubans blend in VERY well, and people would refer to them as WHITE! One cuban I met I found out was cuban YEARS after I met her. Her spanish was too good, and I asked basically "What gives?"!
#24? So a show is racist if you don't feel they properly present the demographic? My father told me the first jewish person he knew of, that he met, was in COLLEGE! He knew the guy was jewish because, after they played a game that BOTH liked, the other guy said they likely wouldn't play again because he was jewish! For the record, my father didn't care. Most of his friends ended up being jewish, and his 2nd wife is jewish. He also hired two jewish employees. He also hired two blacks, and two chinese persons, and about half the employees were female. Just for the record.
#26? It was a nice show. Makeup your mind? Were blacks SO disadvantaged, or were they in every private school in the nation? As for JO? She played a strong in your face tomboy type. She was from a disadvantaged area. OF COURSE she feels entitled and especially knowledgable about it.

I could say more, but WOW!

WELL, there IS a show on TV where a main character is called GRUNCLE! GREAT UNCLE! I guess it is the brother of one of the grandparents. It might have been the show you saw. YEAH, it follows the standard pattern of PC programming today, and the main plot is that they live in a weird town with some weird secret that includes the center of a lot of paranormal and other weird events.

As for the standard pattern of PC programming? It is on the simpsons, married with children, modern family, etc.... I was born at a time when TV was STILL somewhat in its infancy and remember hearing about what they thought TV could evolve into. I even saw some of the potential of that on some early programming, and UHF. ALAS, if they ONLY knew what would become of it!

That show is absolutely the worst. My kids were excited about it when it came on because it had the full Cartoon Network "machine" promoting it.

I only needed about 30 seconds to despise it too.

It took them a few months.

Think about it... if someone is your uncle AND your grandpa, what are the implications of that?

Beyond that, it is stupid and insulting. I could actually feel myself getting dumber just watching it.

I have no problem with my kids (7 and 11) watching The Simpsons, because even though it is - some might say - wildly inappropriate, it is clever, funny and does not talk down to its audience.

My kids were destined to be a bit subversive anyway. I would rather have them learn from Bart and Lisa and Homer and Marge than from this steaming pile of crap.

To their credit, they eventually figured out that they were above the idiocy of Uncle Grandpa and abandoned it on their own. It took a bit longer than I would have liked, but they rose to the occasion without a heavy hand from me, and I am very proud of them for it.

Yes, true Looney Tunes, was racist, and bigoted and used excessive violence and probably a few other things our politically insane world couldn't handle.

But compared with the modern day stuff, it is a lot better!

I tried to watch modern day takes on Looney Tunes, and it is crap to put it mildly. The Witch in Hansel and Gretal, with Bugs Bunny for example has a black, female doing the voiceover for the modern take. It is terrible, little old witch, or lady, use an old lady, duh.

Probably some 20+ year old, exec, thought that we will teach our kids how to be more racially tolerant by doing this. Make me want to pitch the tv!

I love the old ones, probably "Chow Hound", is my favourite, (haven't played that one in AU, for at least 10 years) but there are ways around free to air wastelands programming!

Unless we are lucky, some crappy modern day version mixed in with the classics, is the best we will get!

From what l have heard they are redoing Thunderbirds with computer animation. Another classic series bites the dust, sigh!

Oh, this kind of stuff happens in real life, amongst people you wouldn't suspect if you didn't know. Sadly, in my travels through life, I knew a couple who was actually an "Uncle Grandpa and Aunt Grandma" and another family that had an Aunt-Step Mom. I can't imagine what they were thinking/not thinking...

These were not backwoods types of people that you would ever expect, but I'm sure stranger and worse things have happened. What worries me is the possibilities of what can happen via the in vitro or closed adoption methods where a brother and sister get married without knowing who they are.

It's been around 40 yrs since I've seen Looney Tunes. It's surprising to me it's considered racist. I don't remember it being so. What I remember is Bugs, Elmer, the Road Runner and Coyote, etc.

As far as racist - exaggeration is one of the aspects of humor, so I imagine that characters were displayed stereotypically. We still use stereotype in comedy. That's one of the things that makes it comedy instead of reality. Every group has aspects that can be used to caricature it. We've just become too sensitive and humorless to be able to say anything or even admit there are varying cultures or groups without being accused of hatred. It's gone so far, we can't even use general descriptive terms to identify without being accused of hating someone. It's time to stop going along with it, ya think?

As far as Uncle Grandpa - it is vulgar as hell. Based on an incestual character, is better than what they thought was "racist" in Looney Tunes? Really?

I remember when I was 2 or 3 growing up on East Tennessee we had a local grocer named Cas Walker. He used to run these Ads for his Grocery Stores aptly named Cas Walker.

In the tv ads he would run these commercials with this silly song showing young black kids and adults devouring watermelon like it was nobody's business.

This commercial would run all the time with different black boys and girls chomping down on delicious Cas Walker Watermelon.

At that time not knowing better I always saw these black boys chomping on watermelon so assumed ALL blacks just loved their watermelon ( my parents thankfully told me otherwise.)

      But others kids' parents didn't.

So whats the big deal about this ??

When you ' pigeonhole' a group of people with certain characteristics and proceed to blanket that group as having these particular characteristics, it gradually takes away and limits their freedom to truly grow as human beings.

      Thats the bottom line.

For example, Freddie Krueger was played by a character actor named. Robert Englund. For many years the perceived view that all he does is play horror movies has limited his Success as an all around consummate actor

Well, it was a WHILE before I heard the black<->watermelon stereotype. Frankly, I dislike watermelon, and I am white, but I have known a LOT of whites that LOVE the stuff! If blacks loved it too, BIG DEAL! The same goes for CHICKEN, though I DO like chicken. How could such stereotypes limit freedom?

As for the films you saw, what about context? It is funny! Blacks have complained about ads for primarily white consumers in white areas being all black, or only having a "token" black. Now YOU speak of a case where they could complain because there are no whites.

As for robert englund? That affects MANY actors that hit it big with a character. He generally plays the nice outcast type. Sometimes he plays the recluse genius type. He played the first honest alien in V. Look at Bob Denver.
