OMGosh! OMGosh!

Hubby just filled out the application form for Jake!

I sooo hope we get him!

He's not the type of dog I initially wanted, but when I saw him, it was like he looked into my eyes and soul right from his picture!

I want him so desperately!

Oh, haha! Here he is...

What do you think?

He has a pink nose,...a match made in heaven l think!

Does the name Jake have some hidden meaning or was it a name out of a hat?

He looked into me soul too (what's left of it- I have it split up and hidden as 7 horcruxes).
    Can I have him?

Time for you to put the Harry Potter books down for a while.

      Cute dog Terra
Keep him away from WC, I think he's hungry.

Oh Terra, he is just so cute and makes you want to just pick him up and give him a hug. He looks young, how old is he?

        How soon will you know?

I really wish we could have more than one at a time, but I doubt our pup would be happy about it.

Jake is his current name and I like it. If I do get him and Jake seems to fit him, he'll keep that name unless his personality just shouts a different name, then it'll be changed.

Haha! I hope not. As electrifying as it is to look at his cute lil face, that is not the reason.

I think his crazy doo just adds to his cute appeal.

He is at an animal hospital that is open 7 days a week and they request that you fill out the adoption form and email it to them first and not call and ask questions or to make an appointment to see him as they do have scheduled appointments for their patients and not all employees are part of their adoption team. Once they go over the form and verify some things, they'll call you.

So it's just a waiting game now...And the wait is driving me nuts!

I hope it won't be very long! I'm on pins and needles!

I don't know how old he is, only that he is listed as a baby. The site didn't give very much information, only this:

Jake: Dog • Terrier Mix • Baby • Male • Small

Jake is an adorable and happy little guy. He is playful and funny and would love to be your next bestie!

          Spayed/Neutered • Current on vaccinations

          • Our adoption fee for dogs is $300. This covers their spay or neuter, microchip, 6 months of heartworm preventative and whatever vaccinations they receive while they are still at our hospital
That's all the info I have thus far.

So again, it's just a waiting game. It's hard knowing I have to wait when I know he is only about 15 miles from me right now, lol!

That is exactly how I met Maddy back in 1998, my aussie/lab mix. Except it was in person, not online. I must have looked at a dozen dogs at the shelter that day, but she was the one I connected with.

She stuck around for a great 9 years after that - and there was never any regret.

Good luck Terra, I hope it works out. You know what they say about getting your hopes up though...

          Yes, Yes I do.

And if it doesn't work out for some evil reason, haha! If if doesn't work out, then I'll just know he wasn't the one for me. And I'll keep on looking.

Terriers make good snacks for Huskies.

Seriously, though, they usually have a good, confident personality and
a West Highland White Terrier was the only small dog that could play well
    with my Husky.

I think your Jake, (hopefully) is a mix between a Jack Russell Terrier (they'll try to take on a bear) and a Yorkshire Terrier or Cairn Terrier. However, I'm far from an expert.

When I was a courier, I was also dispatcher at night.
We had been making deliveries to the Mountain home
        of a company executive.

He called to ask me if the courier might have taken his Jack Russell.
Sadly, the answer was no and they are really not the kind of dog
you leave off leash, outside, in the evening, in the mountains.
No dog is safe like that, but Jack Russels really will take on
an animal like a bob cat, cougar or bear.

Tempting as it was, I did not tell him to his face that he was stupid.
(For leaving his dog out and accusing my courier.)

His ears resemble a Chihuahua's, but seem to be more on top of is head, while Chihuahua's ears are more on the side. There really aren't many breeds with ears that stand up naturally that I can think of...Yorkie is one of them too.

Maybe he just got into a bucket of starch?

Odds are, Jake probably isn't a mix of just two purebreds.

I'm still waiting for the Serenity Animal Hospital to call. Hopefully it will be today.

I'm sure they have to verify some things in the application first. Like the vet I used for our kitties, my property, that we own and don't need a landlord's permission and things like that.

It did say at the bottom of the adoption form that if they found out any information is incorrect, you can forget about it!

I'm sure they're doing that for Jake's benefit so I really don't mind.

It is! I was very bummed when I didn't get a call today, but I just got an email from them saying they are processing my application and ask for my patience as they are an extremely busy organization but are acting as promptly as they can.

They said when the process is complete, they will call to make an appointment for me to come and meet Jake face to face and we'll go on from there.

Hurray! But darned processes and red tape, haha!

Best to ask them are they doing a DNA test as well?

One council in Au, is doing that for all new pets, (and offering an incentive for current dog owners, l think) so that if one let's his dog, do his business in a park and not clean up, they will be fined.

Or send it off to the lab, so they can match it will the current database and fines issued!

I tried to edit my last post, but I just get the spinning cursor thing.

Anyway, I wonder if DNA testing can determine the different Terrier types
    that may be in him?

      Maybe. It depends. They say,

Mixed-breed dogs can be simple or complex. The more pure or mixed breeds in a dog's ancestry, the more difficult it is to identify a dog's pedigree.
The further back a given pedigree is in a dog's history, the more mixed and diluted the characteristics in the genetic signature will be. Genetic signatures from purebred parents of a mixed-breed dog are easier to detect than grandparents, and both are much easier to detect than great-grandparents.

They do a blood test version that supposedly recognizes all AKC breeds. You have to get it done at your vet's office. The swab version recognizes most of them. Supposedly.

I had a dog that many people, including vetted vets LOL, thought had some wolf

I would have done it in a heartbeat. She was the gentlest dog ever - a Gamma

      Thanks Sal!

Hubby put in his mom and our friends who have the four dogs for the two references. If they ask for another though, you are it!!

I just cant believe how difficult it is for you to acquire a dog. All this references and good character stuff. You could have gone to a pet store or shelter, taken your time looking and got one by now!

And you told them already that you only eat Poodles.

Maybe they can only thoroughly investigate a certain portion of applicants and Terra just hit one of their "it's you" milestones. I do remember when I got a kitten from a local shelter years and years ago, someone came out to my home to check on him. At the time, you just picked out a kitten and paid a small fee, gave your name, address and phone. They gave me a box to transport him home and that was about it.

The lady who checked on him only made a very fast visit, but I think it was a couple months after we got him.

She is new to the area, which might be a automatic yellow flag, and she mentioned that they are a 24/7 animal hospital that does pet adoptions on the side. Hopefully it's just a little more time.

One of the biggest pet adoption facilities in the Denver, CO area does pretty thorough screening and tries to at least drive by a lot of residences. Adopting a Husky, or other escape artist breed, and they

The area she's "new" to is only a few miles from where she was. The dog is at a vet - it might just not be back to good condition enough yet for them to care if it's a quick adoption or not. I'm more worried about if the little guy is okay.

Some of these shelters, while doing great work, get a little high on themselves. It really depends on the shelter. We had one nearly not allow us to adopt because we both work. Another came out and did a home inspection. I think I probably could have gotten a foster child easier.

We have a 3000 sq ft home with a stay-at-home mom, 2 kids and lots of woods on our property. Perfect for a dog, right?

Some of the shelters in our area actually turned us down because we had invisible fencing installed (our neighborhood has regulations against real fences, plus the amount of property would have made the cost prohibitive)

We found our husky/chow mix Blue Bear (yes that is one blue eye and one brown eye) at a shelter an hour away in Kalamazoo. He very happily rules his woods now, striking fear into the hearts of chipmunks and charming delivery people & passersby every day.

Oh you guys, I am so distraught!

We still hadn't heard anything as of yesterday afternoon so hubby did call them.

They told him Jake is still available and hasn't been adopted yet. Again, they told him they are a very large and busy organization and that they receive numerous applications for all of their cats and dogs daily. They go over all of the applications meticulously trying to find the perfect home for them.

Once the applications have been processed, they take the viable ones before a board of vets and the adoption team and a decision is made.

They said it may seem like a long time, but honestly it isn't as they only want to get their little guys adopted out to a forever home and they strive for a 100% success rate.

I'm so bummed! I've almost given up hope. I'm afraid my birthday is going to come and go and I won't have my puppy. That's all I wanted. That's all I've ever wanted!

I have searched more for another puppy just in case, but I just can't find one that suits me.

I did consider just going to a pet store and getting one, but I really want to rescue one. Hubby is not happy with all of this. He told me that if we don't have Jake by the end of the month, he's taking me to a flea market where breeders sell puppies every weekend.

                But I want Jake.

I never dreamed trying to adopt a puppy would be so hard!

Terra ... a flea market where they sell puppies from backyard breeders would probably be your worst bet. Like Jack mentioned, some rescue operations have made the process so cumbersome that it defies logic. The one you're dealing with sounds like that is the case.

I went to my County shelter. I walked in, picked out two dogs to walk, made my choice, filled out the application and went home with Walker. He's the happiest hound dog alive and I love him. If I hadn't been suitable, the application process would have picked that up. They don't fool around there. They want the dogs and people to meet and qualified people to walk out with their dogs. It costs $65 and he is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Have you checked the County shelters in your area? Those dogs have a death sentence over their heads if they aren't adopted. Walker was listed on Petfinders.com. That's not likely with Jake.

We have checked them and the ones that house the dogs all have large breed dogs like Pit bulls, Boxers, Rotties and Shepards and all mixes thereof. We want a small dog, preferably a puppy as we have 5 small grandchildren that are over on a regular basis.

Most of the shelters around here foster their pets out and they are all listed on Petfinders. The cheapest adoption fee I've come across is $225 but most run $400.

PS Jake is listed on Petfinders, that's how I found him.

Small dogs are hard to find in the shelters because they go very quickly. If you can rescue an animal, that is great, but if you can't find a dog that you want via rescue, there is no shame in buying a dog from a reputable breeder. I had my heart set on a West Highland White Terrier and bought one. I also have bought a Bassett Hound and a Boxer. Those are breeds that I really love and it's important to get a dog that you'll be happy with.

Puppies and small dogs are premium ... very hard to find, as I said, in rescue and they will disappear in a heartbeat. If you do end up buying a puppy, try to find an AKC registered breeder rather than some backyard breeders who care nothing about the breed ... only want the dough. Pet stores often get their pups from puppy mills, the scourge of the pet industry. Breeders advertise on the Net and in classifieds.

Your birthday is Sunday. Mine is Monday. Happy birthday from one Taurus to another. It doesn't sound like the vet organization is going to get this done by then. That's disappointing, I know.

It hasn't been that long - 4 days (weekdays). The person you are talking to on the phone is probably a volunteer or a receptionist and can't rush this through for you.

Ask yourself honestly - is this about giving THIS dog a forever home...or about your birthday present? You've waited a long time to get a dog so what's the rush?

It's about Jake - so put your big girl pans on and give the people time to check out the placement. I asked at the foundation where I volunteer and was told it can take them 7-10 business days to approve a placement. A woman there told me they don't want "impulse adoptions" where people get a dog and then change their mind a week later. That's one reason they take some time.

It's frustrating to wait - but these agencies are making sure the animals are placed in safe homes. They have to because of the idiots who treat animals badly.

Yes it is disappointing, but I've waited a long time to adopt a puppy and hubby wanted to give me one for my birthday. Hubby is the one getting the most upset and I'm sure it's because it's not unfolding the way he wanted it to and because he loves me and wants to make me happy. Gotta love him back, lol!

Terra, if somehow it turns out that it isn't Jake, just maybe a bit older, larger dog would be okay if you can get enough info on it what it likes and dislikes to start with. I've always had bigger dogs, and I really do think, properly trained, they are just as good with children.

When my first son was born, we had a beautiful pedigreed German Shepherd. She was a bit jealous the first day home and then quickly turned into his second mom right away. And, this was despite some dopey people making frightening remarks about what my dog was going to do to my baby. The thing was, I knew my dog well since she was 8 weeks old and made sure she knew what I wanted her to do.

You can't just auto-trust any dog, big or small. They have to know their family rank and what is expected of them as well as include them as much as possible with new or unmet family members.

It is just about loving control of the dog. While there are some that just won't behave, it is likely most will if you train them right.

I decided to take Suzanne's advice and had my son take me to the pound when he got home from work and OMGosh!

We walked in and the people at the desk explained how it all worked, about the 3 different cards on their cages. One type of card was for those who were ready to be adopted out today. Another for strays that had been picked up or turned in who were healthy had to wait 7 days to see if their owner claimed them before they could be adopted and the third card was for the ones who were being treated by vets until they were healthy enough to adopt out.

We opened the door and walked through. My heart was pounding. Lining the hallway were different doors with letters on them representing size. The large dogs were first. We went through that door and there were cages upon cages with all pitbulls and pitbull mixes with a couple of other big dogs I couldn't identify. Some were lying down looking so sad with bloodshot eyes and didn't even move when we entered or walked by. Others were crying. Just a couple barked.

I started to talk to them and then I lost it. I burst out in tears and couldn't stop them from forming or falling. When I started to cry, one of the dogs who hadn't been crying stated whining, crying with me. Then came the big sobs! I had mascara running down my face and looked a fright!

My son had to escort me back to his car so I could pull it together. Everyone was looking at me and I was so embarrassed! Once in his car, I got a grip on myself and regained control, so we went back in and went through some more doors. These were bigger dogs too, different sorts of hound dog mixes. I managed to just have tears rolling down my cheeks slowly.

When we entered the last door, the first cage held a 3 year old Pomeranian girl. She was so sweet. She was excited and started turning circles in her cage on the upper level. When I stepped closer, she stuck her little head out of the slot where they slip in food and water, I think. Anyway, she licked the tears on my cheek.

I took her card and she was on her 7th day meaning she could be adopted tomorrow/today now. I took the card to the front desk and found out there were 5 "interested parties" but filled out my adoption form anyhow. They told me they work on a first come first served basis. I know I probably won't get her, but it was a start anyway.

Then a gentleman gave me a card with a website on it. He told me they get anywhere between 4 to 12 dogs in per day and I could view them from that website. He said if there was one I liked, to come back down, see it, get the card and hopefully be the first "interested person".

I still want Jake but, as each day passes, I lose just a little hope. I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst, but hope for the best. If Jake falls through, I do have other options.

I swear, I never knew adopting a pet would be so difficult! Hubby is like, "Screw 'em! We'll go to the fair and buy you a puppy there. No wonder people get puppies from puppy mills. They've gone overboard and have taken it too far and made it too difficult to rescue a poor puppy!"

Don't worry! I will never ever do business with a puppy mill!!

As many here know, Huskies are my favorite breed. My second one looked very, very much like Mishka. My first one did this low in pitch and volume "howl-growl" thing in the mornings after I
woke up. I think she was saying, "Dad, lets get going and I have to pee".

The way they talk is one of the reasons I like them. Also, one of the reasons they need
owners who have done their research on the breed. Some howl a lot when left alone and
often the neighbors don't care for that.

I'm not surprised. Sorry that happened. He was so adorable he would get adopted very fast.

I know what you mean about crying at the county shelter. When I advised you to go there, I looked up puppies in MI and then I went back to my zip. And I found Elsa.

It broke my heart. The hounds are such gentle loving dogs and here's another just like Walker who is so emaciated. Only 8 months old. And I can't take another dog. I have enough. And there were 3 more new hounds. It never stops. And here's Nadia. She's in better shape than Elsa is, but I would take Elsa in a heartbeat. Both actually. lol.

New ones come in every day. Check the site daily and and if you see one you're interested in, run to the shelter and put in an app.

Terra, I'm so sorry you didn't get Jake.

Your puppy will get home with you sooner than you know it. You are ready for one, you know it will happen, the waiting is just your biggest difficulty, that would certainly drive me to tears as well.

Except for one purebred, we've always gotten shelter pets. I really can't bear to stop by just to visit because it makes me want to cry as well to see these poor animals wanting to go home with someone. At this point in our lives, we now only have one pet at a time, so we stay out of the shelters except to run in and check out their newest dog toys.

Why don't you give the vet you know a call and see if the office knows of anyone looking to give away puppies? Last year there was a woman who brought in the most well behaved and absolutely gorgeous grey kittens for their checkup. She was also looking for homes for them. About killed me to have to tell her we couldn't take one.

              You have my sympathies.

After burying Hansel, I went to go find another small dog for Maggie and Mittens.

One of the ones I found was a collie mix named 'Minnie'.

When I went to go get her, I was told her original owner finally came in and claimed her.

Yeah it hurt, but hey when Hansel went missing, I was overjoyed to get him back....so I can relate and it made my day.

I second Suzanne about the hounds. The gentlest dogs I've known in my life were hounds. By "gentle" I don't mean the super friendly sort that my pit bull Gracie is but the hounds were content to just BE with you and so anxious to please. They were great with kids, too.

That top photo breaks my heart....we should turn the dogs loose and put those owners in the cages.

They are ... Walker lives to be with me. He's so happy just walking with me, being in the same room with me. He is large, but I have 7 grandchildren and would never get a dog that I couldn't trust absolutely around children. My grandchildren love him. They love him more than they do Buddy ... Buddy, true to his terrier genes, is headstrong and obstinate. lol. Walker is just appreciative of all attention paid to him.

I found the same when I had kids around. The big dog will lay next to them - walk with them - watch out for them.

Terra - I was a bit concerned when you mentioned "pomeranian" - I don't think of that breed as a good "kid dog". I've known several as a former neighbor always had poms. They are cute but can be "touchy" and a bit hyper around kids.

I bet all of those poor dogs in cages cry each night they have to stay locked up hoping for a new owner, imagine how they must feel.

It's good to know at least one more will go to a good home and will be loved and spoilt soon.

I agree rotties are the best dogs ever -- but they are not for everyone. These wonderful animals end up in shelters far too often just because people don't know how to handle them. It's very sad.

Terra - I've been also denied a dog before because I didn't have a fence. I'm the one that teaches dogs "road" "cross" "no cross" and "no go in the road" -- and goes out every day and walks and trains with the dog -- but gotta have that fence. So....I know your frustration.

Also - I agree wholeheartedly to not get a dog from a puppy mill. If you run across anywhere that is milling puppies - report them to your local Humane society, police, and rescue organizations. Getting every one of those hell holes shut down would be a dream come true for thousands of animals.

      No worries!

Growing up with my Dad as an AKC Beagle and Weimaraner breeder and helping raise and train the pups my whole childhood, I despise puppy mills!

I wish my Dad was still alive, with all of his connections, I would have had my puppy like yesterday!

But such is life, so the waiting continues....

Terra - so sorry. Must have been in great demand. That's why you couldn't get any time commitment, right? Because you were on the list - but not on top of the list?

On the bright side - you know they are careful about the homes dogs go to...so you know that little guy got a good home. There's a dog waiting for you - you just have to find him/her!

I talked to the head of the AAF (Animal Adoption Foundation) this morning and he said in some parts of the country, the spay/neuter programs have been so successful that small dogs, especially, often have several people apply to adopt them.

If you apply for another dog - I wonder...will they tell you where your application stands...#1,2,3 etc?
