I remember in pre teen era watching Letterman ( in 1980 or 81ish I think) start with a morning show. It didn't last long as he went to late night and the rest is history.

Stopped watching very much in last 12 years or so with advent of Internet and Cable.

But great memories growing up with Dave

I will tune in tonight, no doubt

I hadn't watched Letterman for years. I have for the last week or so. Very sharp guy. I wish now that I had seen more of him.

Although I haven't watched Dave much the last 10 years or so, I was a big fan for a long time and remember his first shows when he wore a sweater before they made him wear a suit.

I hope I remember to watch tonight...

I just got a spam email to my online mail box, Subject: David Letterman Cancels Last Show.

Content: Sandra Bullock punches David Letterman multiple times in the head for revealing what she uses to look younger.

Link to Dr Oz Wrinkle Cream webpage.

Clever spamming.

I don't know what he was like years ago but although I find him personable, I don't find him to be that funny as opposed to the likes of Jay Leno. The replacement to Leno (whats his name) is not a naturally funny man either. Your only as good as your writers in a lot of cases.

Yet Carson wanted Letterman to replace him. Plus, I'm a huge Carson fan and preferred Letterman myself. Letterman also followed Carson for many years, so I'm not sure I totally buy that his audience was much different than Leno's when it came to Carson's viewers.

How many older viewers were even up when Carson, Letterman or Leno were on?

Claude's usually tucked up in bed by 10 pm. But sometimes, if he's been good, his wife leaves the coffin lid open so he can watch it.

It really is strange how many of us on this Thread say 40 and over had migrated away from watching Dave in the last decade or so.

Do you think it was the deluge of other quality programs like Cable shows i.e. The Sopranos, Sex and Th City and also finding entertainment on the Internet ?

It is just fascinating to how a number of you guys on this Thread had the some experience as me...really into him in the 80s and 90s but ended up trailing off after that

I watched Johnny Carson, then David Letterman,. When Jon Stewart took over The Daily Show, I watched that, and then Letterman. When The Colbert Report started, I switched to that.

But The Colbert Report is really the reason I kept watching The Daily Show. I use these shows as background noise. I'm usually reading when they are on. But Colbert really kept my attention.

Not a fan of Willie myself, on this point, I'd say Dylan makes Willie sound like Sinatra

About 2 years ago, some friends treated us to a Dylan concert. It was horrible. We left about half way through. But just as surprising was that probably half the people there were also leaving.

The other thing about Dylan, there was zero audience interaction. He came on stage, started singing. Rolled from one song to another, no segue's, song names...nothing.

Disappointing.

Ok, back to Letterman! I watched him a few times over the years. Late Night TV was never my thing.

  Never saw that. He did have a TV show that I recall as being quite funny, though I was smoking huge amounts of pot in those days. I thought that my dog was a comedic genius. :-(

I'm sure that it was. I would never pay money to see any musical performance. I was fortunate to have grown up at a time where I got to see almost all of the bands that created the soundtrack of my generation, including Dylan. His performance was electrifying. One of the best that I had ever seen. I was a huge Dylan fan, so I'm sure that had something to do with my appraisal.

I have no idea why he keeps going out. He probably has the absolute worst voice of active performer and he hasn't written a really good song in many years, but folks still flock to see him.

I doubt very much that he does it for the money, so his motivation eludes me.

Dylan is also a bit crazy. Always has been, always will be.

Dylan has the worst voice on the planet, followed closely by Willie. :-)

Ok, back to Letterman! I watched him a few times over the years. Late Night TV was never my thing.

Late night TV died when they took Tom Snyder off the air. :-)

I will never get the allure of Dylan. Maybe a great Poet but that is about it. I would think his concert would be ultra boring.

While I would never call myself a Dylan "fan", I do like some of his stuff. If I wasn't given 2 free tickets, I would not have gone to see him live. The guy that gave them to me is such a fan he goes to every show he can drive to.

Time to retire. He's ruining his legacy with his tours.

Dylan's a great song writer and a horrible performer, IMO. I like when other people do Dylan's songs. Hendrix's version of All Along the Watch Tower, Johnny Winter doing Highway 61 Revisted, Clapton and Knocking on Heaven's Door, for example.

I think the only Dylan song I like Dylan doing himself is "Everybody Must Get Stoned". His bad voice seems to fit that song well.

As for Dave's show, it was great to see a few clips of Larry "Bud" Melman. It's been so long, I had forgotten about him.

  I DVR'd it. It stopped recording at the regularly scheduled end time, which was about 20 minutes before the actual ending of the show.
