My son was born less than two hours ago. 20 inches, 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

(Okay, that's not his real name, but it doesn't sound too bad.)

I'll post a pic once I get a good one. (He's currently too busy playing with my wife's boobs - he's definitely a Riffle.)

It did, but he didn't come out the same way he went in.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

damn - all kinds of dirty jokes are popping into my head right now.
I'll be nice though, after all, as of today, your life as you know it
        is pretty much over.

        Welcome to the real world....sucka

Dan; Contrary to what you heard in high school. You can't get pregnant from swallowing.

And...Finally, a man in the family.

OK, I'm done. I'm very happy for you. I can't imagine a better day than this.

I think you're missing the bigger picture here.

              You got a cat.

Riffle went out and outdid you with a baby.

              Game on...

But - who will get more sleep?

                  Who will spend more money?

By his second birthday, the cat will be acting like an adult....the baby will be hitting the "terribles".

Claude's new cat wakes him up at 6:30 am...

Dan's new baby wakes him and his wife up at 12 am, 2 am, 4 am, 6 am...

(Hope you really like coffee, Dan!)

Dan will pay more. Unfortunately, he will also get more. Some of my favorite memories are of my son, learning something new...figuring something out. It happens almost daily, until the boy is 17...and enters the "Age of infinite wisdom"...where he knows more than you do..and you "Just don't get it".

And my cat will still be chasing his tail.

I truly envy Riffle, for the experience he is about to have.

Of course, Riffle will get to hear, "You don't understand me at all! I need those $300 sneakers"

And my cat will never say that.

By the way..Dan..Remember SEX? Remember how great that is? That's all over now.

Oh, you too? My son hasn't spoken to me in four years; I became irrelevant.

Ah, well. I always leave the door open. Maybe he'll find it when he turns 30.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Years ago (when my son was in his early 20s) we didn't speak for about a year. I suspect, if I waited for him to call...it would have been many years, maybe never. So I called.

David, I don't really know you at all...other than you are articulate.

But you need to get in touch with him, and make an attempt to bond again. If you can't stand to be with each other, you're the one that has to be civil, and make the effort.

In discussions with my son, I can see that he has no idea what it's like to love your child. He won't know, until he has one of his own. And I know that I'll always love him more than he loves me. The bond to a child is simply stronger than the bond to a parent.

But (And I will now sound like an old Jewish mother), someday, you'll be very very sorry you didn't make the effort. And if you die before your son, he'll be very sorry he didn't make the effort.

My son hates to hear things like this, but I've told him that I love him enough that it's more important that he's successful (whatever that means) in life, than if he loves me.
And that everything I've ever said to him is to help him, not me.

I don't know your situation. But I suspect you'll feel much better, if you make the effort..even if you're rejected.

Four years is a long time.

Not to worry. I am civil. I do make the effort. He's not interested.

If it makes you feel any better, I wasn't interested either.

My father was a hard... hard man.
                              I was a stubborn...stubborn kid.

Eventually, we made peace and became family again.

                              Edit:
Unfortunately, it took a terminal disease for us to even try.

                              Don't let that happen.

And the second part is why you reach out - so HE won't feel guilty at some point. Doesn't have to be a rah rah - just a contact - an open door.

It never hurts someone to know they are loved - even if they don't want the hug that goes with it. When someone is gone - it's too late.

Sometimes it does not happen, ever. Or, it does in
                              the due course of time.

Sometimes it's better for both to leave things be.
Especially if professional guidance is needed to avoid being
destructive, but is not an option because of stubbornness
and having a mind that is simply closed to therapy.

Keep the door open of course.

Trying with my Dad seems to have made things worse for both of us.
I probably caused him more guilt feelings and he was already obsessing
over the ripples he caused in the family. On the other hand, he would
do more of what I did not like.

Life for me was much more peaceful after we had no relation.

I figured out later the he probably has OCD - the rudeness manifestation of it
like Nicholson in the movie "As Good As It Gets". Even so, there was intentional
meanness on his part, so I could not just say, "Oh, that's just the OCD talking."
and come back to the relation.

Although he is alive, I grieved the same as if he had died.
                              It's been about 20 years.

Really depends upon the dynamics and the issues.

destructive, but is not an option because of stubbornness
and having a mind that is simply closed to therapy.

                              Don't stop trying.

In my family, it was the flip side of the coin. My brother was constantly rebelling against my mom, a teenage thing I'm sure. One night he was angry with her trying to reign him in. He called her a "Bitch" and walked out the door. He didn't come home that night.

The next morning on her way to work, she was hit head on by a drunk driver. She was DOS, but they kept on working on her because she was so young. She clinically died 4 times in 39 1/2 hours, with the fifth death being final. She was 39 1/2 years old. He was 17, I, 19.

It took my brother forever to get over the tremendous guilt he felt.

As a matter of fact, I had to go and talk him off the railroad tracks on 2 occasions after that. The first was relatively easy, the second time wasn't, the train could be heard in the distance. Hubby (before he was hubby) talked him off them without much time to spare.

                              Very scary!

Anyway, we never know what tomorrow holds. Keep trying and don't ever stop.

It's funny that you ask that. My family has historically worked for one of the hospitals in our area for decades. Thus, my family considers it the superior hospital. Of course, my insurance only works with the cross-town rival hospital. I've been getting shit for the past ten months about ending up here.

The hospital doesn't really offer anything and the Wi-Fi is unsecured. I'm a tad disappointed. However, the food is surprisingly decent.

                          "Christian names
a name given to an individual that distinguishes him or her from other members of the same family and is used as an address of familiarity; a forename, especially one given at baptism."

But not exclusive to. The use of the expression "Christian Names" has gone way beyond the connotations of a religion or baptism, just an expression that is commonly used to describe a first or forename, at least in the UK. All words and expressions derive from somewhere.

                            Congrats, Riffle!

My three kids are hands down my favorite people. Even the one who's an a-hole most of the time. The best times and best memories of my life are the times I'm with my kids.

The first 8 years are the best. Then they morph from "my little guy" to "my kid". It's still great, but the first 8 are the best.

You're at a perfect time in history for this. I so wish I had my current cell phone when even my youngest (11) was born. Almost all my youngest-years videos from all my kids are from actual video cameras. Infrequently taken, and even less frequently watched. Today's short clips are so much more accessible and easier to store and watch than sitting through hours of tape with no chapters.

Capture as many moments as you can. Watching them later never gets old.

Best wishes to you and your family!

I do not believe Dan would swap his baby for a new one for the benefit of a photoshoot.

What works out for animal documentaries heavy on fluffy narrative does not play so well for hoomans.

I expect he is usin' alla the time the baby is jus' sleepin' to catch up on workin' out.

I get it now. Claude and MA were in co-hoots.

Claude pretended like he was upset with MA but it was just a ploy to disguise the fact he was traveling to Dan's to participate in all the poop and circumstances ( As God is my witness I did not see where Dennis already posted this last part until after I just did it. Awwww!

      I think I'm in love!

Just look at that little face! His skin tone is wonderful, his skin is nice and supple not all red with white flakes peeling from dry skin like some babies are. And a head full of hair, too! He's just an absolutely gorgeous little guy.

I'm impressed, Dan! Perfection from a Riffle. Wow!

jeez... leave the forum for a month or two and all hell breaks loose.

    Congratulations Dan!

Remember sleep fondly. Even though you always loved it, you never really appreciated it like you will now. Now, of course, that it is no longer a reliable commodity.

    Marketing Equivalent: The Takeaway.

Once your wife has forgiven you for the pain, it is time to start making the cow jokes. I used to take my newborn son down to the basement so my wife could sleep in peace. We had walkie talkies. When he needed to eat, I would pick mine up and moo into it - her signal that we were coming up and it was time to whip out a boob.

I also got a huge kick out of telling dirty jokes while holding my kids like ventriloquist dummies.

Enjoy every moment. They will go by quickly, and pretty soon you'll be an embarrassment to him.

      Awww!

      Dan, he is absolutely adorable!
He, almost, I said almost, makes me want to have another.

It's a good thing my own baby boy (26) is getting married this summer. He can make me another baby to hold, lol!

Anyway, you take as much time away from this place as needed. Little ones grow up so fast, the time just flies by. Enjoy each and every moment you can.

Just go ahead and say something like this...

Okay Warrior Forum, leave me alone.
I'm now busy, with a little guy of my own.

I've got a little guy to hold in my hand,
With time passing like hourglass sand.

I know I can hold his hand but for a short time,
So I'm going to make that time quality as can be.
So that I can hold his heart forever, throughout eternity,
And have a son that is proud that I am his daddy.

      We'll understand.
