It depends on your business. BTW when you consider a the CRM system, you have to know that the future of CRM is Integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Systems.

All the big CRM companies like Salesforce are developing AI systems for their CRM.

Probably, you are absolutely right about AI and CRM, however I do not think that it is our nearest future. However, big CRM vendors really invest into AI. The software which we use in our company, Bpm'online crm, validated and improved its position in the Leaders Quadrant for its unprecedented agility to modify business processes, continuous investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), mobile development. They are direct competitors to Salesforce, which was mentioned above.

I believe that "Know when to walk away", "and when to run", are pretty high up.

Knowing what the needs and how to move up with it, the better way to get in touch.
    CRM comes in 4 types:
    1. Conversation CRM
    2. Leads and Deals CRM
    3. Contact CRM
    4. Marketing CRM
they're each designed to help you understand your contacts better, and then put that knowledge to work.
They can price from 0 to 80$ per month as per the app you choose.

In the internet marketing / affiliate marketing space, specifically. Here is what I suggest:

    - Lead gen and e-commerce support baked in
    - Landing page integration with split testing
    - Offer management (Campaigns, etc)
    - Fraud detection (check the quality of your sales / leads)
    - Call center support (whether you're doing it in house or outsourcing it, ability for admins to log in and change details, orders, deal with cancellations, etc)
    - Merchant gateway integration (Authorize.net, NMI, etc)
    - Fulfillment integration (Fulfillment.com, Amazon, e-Fulfillment, etc)
    - Ability to handle rebilling and trial offers
    - Ability to log notes and followup tasks to leads
    - Ability to BCC the CRM when emailing your clients/leads (tracking communication)
    - Handle affiliates (in case you are getting traffic from affiliate marketing)

There's much more but that's a list to start with.
