Scarlet? Sounds like Dallas or Dynasty, or maybe Gone With the Wind, (that reminds me l have been meaning to watch that movie for the last 50 years).

MASH was really good with creating replacement characters. Trapper and Honicutt...Burns and Winchester...Cols Blake and Potter.

Off the top of my head, other good character swaps where both characters were good:
Festus for Chester on Gunsmoke
Saunders for Benson on Soap
Al for Arnold on Happy Days
Woody for Coach and Rebecca for Dianne on Cheers

And Bewitched swapped the two Dicks (York and Sargent) that both played the same character Darrin.

Wishlist: And speaking of Dicks...How about a swap of anyone for Claude on the Warrior Forum?

That's because the characters weren't just changed, the old characters were written out of the show.

It would've been a completely different thing if they replaced McLean Stevenson with Harry Morgan in the role of Colonel Blake, or any of the other characters were just played by different actors.

Swapping out the Darren's on Bewitched was part of the show's downfall. Dick Sargent had nowhere near the chemistry that York did with Samantha

I like your idea of swapping out the Whitacre for someone else. Anyone really.

And unfortunately they used the same characters a few times over its lifespan, (the guy that took Hawkeyes bandage off his eyes, when he was blind, showed up a few times, and a patient).

Colonel Potter also showed up earlier as a nuts General Steele, if l remember correctly.

And Radar apparently mangled his hand in a farming accident, (in real life) and made sure he was always holding something to hide it.

As for patients, l believe l have seen the same one a few times over in the series, but who cares, it lasted far longer than most.

Lucky if it lasts one season.

PS Dan was supposed to have died in the 80's one, so yeah....
