Okay, this is somebody with WAY too much time on their hands.

I could have made about $3,000 in the time it would have taken me to go
    through all that.

But I give him tons of points for coming up with an amazing reverse scam.

That takes quite a bit of thinking.

Deperation can really lead someone to do stupid things, I'm appalled that he would take the bait, it would be far better if these scam artists were put in jail for all the scams they pull.

Yeah - it would be better, but in some places they probably just believe that it is an adult's own problem if they aren't smart enough to see through such blatant scamming. They don't believe in babysitting adults everywhere you go.

I kind of feel bad for the scammer too but everytime I start to feel bad for the scammer I have to remind myself that this scum bag is trying to rip off what he believes is a church that gives charitable contributions to disaster victims.

I also wonder what happened to the scammer when the emails abruptly stopped but to quote Ivan Drago from Rocky IV "If he dies, he dies."

Not to mention, the overwhelming majority of scammers aren't in Nigeria at all. Advance fee fraud goes on everywhere. You never hear about the rampant fraud in the Netherlands (what, and avoid Amsterdam?!), and let's not forget the forerunner of the typical "Nigerian" advance fee fraud was the "Spanish Prisoner" con.

This reminds me of the Dateline special where they reverse-scammed a couple of Nigerian scammers. They had them fly into a town and everything only to find out they were going to be on national television. Too bad they didn't take the reverse-scam further.

You'll see it a lot in scam baiting comminities. Good fun to read, and see how easy it is to hook someone who is greedy.

          From Wikipedia :

The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (part of Chapter 38: "Obtaining Property by false pretences; Cheating") dealing with fraud

There's another similar site, scamorama . com that is just brilliant...

It was VERY cleverly done, and the scammer has been branded for life as a result.

I know I shouldn't be, but I feel a bit sorry for him and I can't help but feel that this guy had got himself in deep with some people who he owed money to. The fact his email suddenly went cold is probably not uncommon for a scammer, but the more alarming thought I have had, is that something significantly more sinister may have happened to him. I hope it hasn't. For whilst I think he deserved being taught a lesson, I would never wish anything malicious or brutal on anyone, and it seems that this guy did not mix in good circles in Nigeria.

    Fascinating read though.

It's just so too bad that it comes Nigeria (or wherever for that matter). I've met Nigerians who are most wonderful and hard working. But it's too bad it comes from one country and gets bad reputation like this.

      1. Not every Nigerian is a scammer.
      2. 419 is their penal code for fraud.

      3. Not fair now all Nigerians painted with the same brush as their scammers and some 419 are no longer in Nigeria. holy mrs oli in the ivory coast, baby.

4.I am glad Paypal ClickBank etc do not bar Americans because of how many crooks do we have again?

I see why it may be necessary based on rampant fraud and self protection which is understandable. But lets not persecute and ban an entire country.

5.I have been watching the 419 scam for close to 20 years now and it is no joke.

having worked with bank secrecy act compliance when 419 came to be infamous, back when their mission statement was to bring down the US Financial System. credit card chippies. (LOL everybody ends up on the internet and 419 is no exception.

....not condoning anything either way, but it is hard to say what one would do if they were starving and their country was even in worse shape, having been occupied and pillaged globally and locally. (yeh the yin yang)

the really dangerous one now to me is ConfIcker fLicker or whatever. it has some strange patterns and as soon as someone 'gets it', it morphs into something else, it hides and then it re-emerges and nobody knows where or when.

The reason I correlate Conflicker is because it has gone back and forth and recently (last few years) was discovered in internet home banking, ok...

Next just in the last few weeks it is making noise (not sure if I saw that or if true that it is now in email/spam.

Maybe ya had to be there but it makes sense to me they are both symptoms of the same evil disease.

The 419 scam is the most successful con of all time. Billions of dollars have been lost to it.
