How Often Do We See Friday The 13th?

Someone once told me that Friday the 13th was a special day...and very rare.

I did some quick math.

Every month of the year has exactly one 13th in it.

And there are 7 days in the week. One of them is Friday.

So the changes of that 13th of the month being on a Friday are one in seven.

So on average , there is a Friday the 13th once every 7 months.

By the way, that same guy once told me that "Everything happens in threes".

I said "Do you know why? Because after something happens the third time, you start the count over again".

This is why I have no friends.

    Well, one of many, anyway.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

On average, there is a Friday the 13th once every 212.35 days. Friday the 13ths occurs with an average frequency of 1.7218 per year or about 3477 since the year 1 CE.

My trainer met me at the gym this morning pointing out it was Friday the 13th - and telling me of several weird happenings so far this morning. Only mildly motivated to work out today, I joked 'maybe we should skip today just to be safe'... His reply - 'nope - those weights aren't going to lift themselves.'

Yup. But this is one of those rare moments that, for a change of pace, I thought I would use reason.

The same thing happens with a full moon.

There is no difference in anything with a full moon, other than the night is lighted slightly better because there is more light reflected off the moon. The gravity of the moon stays the same in all phases.

But there is no more instances of crime, no more violence, no more insanity than at any other time. Superstitions are nearly immortal.

    Question

    40 + 40 x 0 + 1 = ?

    Answer, is it..

    A) 1
    B) 41
    C) 82

PS: Alexa did not answer this correctly for some reason

It's 41. But the only reason I know that is that on a Facebook thread Paul Myers posted years ago, there was a similar problem, And I didn't know that (40 X 0) would be a separate set.

      I'm retired...it's a VERY slow day.

        40 + 40 = 80 Then we have the answer of 80 and times it by 0 = 0, plus 1 = 1

No. The 40 X 0 is a separate set, even though it doesn't say that in the question.

The answer 1 is the intuitive answer. The reason this sequence (and others like it) are found far and wide as Facebook and forum posts... is precisely because the set isn't shown, but the math rule still applies. It's a trick question. A joke.

I made the same mistake years ago, until it was explained, and then I looked it up. Yup.

      That's what I thought.

But somehow, the math rules are that the multiplication is automatically a set. I wasn't aware of that myself. So yeah, it's designed to elicit the wrong answer.

It's technically not written incorrectly. For this specific question, parentheses could be added for clarity but they aren't required. Order of operations are to be assumed. The question is simply designed to see if you understand PEMDAS.

I don't think it's anything worthy of humiliation. Had they even created math yet when you were in school?

The only thing he learned in school was about tables, the ones in the dining hall.

That math problem I think brought back memories of seventh grade math . My Dear Aunt Sally . Multiple then decide then add then subtract.

As far as Friday the 13 th . The Free Masons claim their lineage as the knights templer. And the king of France with the permission of the pope had like 15000 knights templer arrested. The on Friday the13th 1307 the leaders and many others where burned at the steak.

It was an attempt to get all the wealth the templers had but that disappeared along with the navy of the templers.

So superstitious yes but with an interesting history if you understand how many of the founding fathers and leaders of the USA where free masons. Nothing sinister about it.
