Is anybody rooting for any teams or watching any games? So far the Packers, Lions, Texans, and KC have won their games. Today the Bills pay the Steelers and the evening game is Tampa Bay vs the Eagles.

Yep, UK-based NFL viewer here. Was up until c4.30AM this morning watching the Lions hang on for victory. Thought the Packers really took the Cowboys by surprise and seem to be getting better with every game.

Being a Giants fan, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'd like to see KC win it again. IMO, Mahomes is the best QB I've seen since I started watching the NFL in the early 1980s.

Just about my favorite sporting spectacle of any is an NFL game in the snow - so tonight's Bills game should be fun!

Well, as a Browns and Buckeyes fan, I'm trying to manage the dichotomy of mourning the Browns and celebrating CJ Stroud.

That said, I'm all in for the Bills the rest of the way.

Divisional Games this weekend 1/20/2024 & 1/21/2024 First game is at 4:30 PM with Roberts, Houston Texans playing the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore. on ESPN

That should be an interesting game to watch. The second game is Green Bay at San Francisco at 8:15 PM EST. Good luck Jamell and Moodesburn1977 with your picks!

Sunday's games Jan 21 - Tampa vs Detroit at 3:00 PM on NBC

Dan's, Buffalo Bills are home vs. Kansas City @ 6:30 pm on CBS.

Any predictions on scores, or who will win each game this weekend?

Will Taylor Swift and the Swifties brave another cold weekend, and show up in Buffalo?

Which game will have the highest score?

Which game will be the biggest Upset?

Which game will be a complete blow out?

I'm hoping the halftime entertainment is a fight to the death between Taylor Swift and Hailee Steinfeld. Pretty sure Steinfeld can take her.

You know that Taylor Swift caused a small earthquake where she was playing to fans in a stadium. They were making so much noise and stamping their feet etc, that a local magnitude 2.0 or so quake occurred in the area. She may be a crap songwriter and really just an average singer, but she certainly resonates with her fans.

Since the pet rock that made the salesman who boxed it over a million, nothing surprises me about the public who will follow anything, even if it is mediocre. She has been around many years now and not one of her songs could be considered a classic. At least Barry Manilow wrote Mandy and a couple of others which were ok.

All subjective, Mark. I personal think she is outrageously talented. Not only does she write her own songs, she designs and creates her whole stage show !! All of it

              Talent at its highest, imho

I always have this beef about song quality. A song must have a good tune or memorable, original melody to be considered a classic. Why are the Beatles still listened to today, because in many of their songs they did just that. Swift has not produced a single song of that quality, by all means, if theirs one you can think of, please name it or post a link to a YT vid of it or something.

So, Swift will be remembered as being an entertaining choreographed performer and having a flashy stage show and perhaps a pretty face but she will not be remembered for the quality or longevity of her songs. Her singing voice is ok but not a "Great" voice like some of the artists that have been around a long time and known for their singing voice alone and interpretation of other peoples songs that they cover or have been written for them.

                We must differentiate here.

                  .
I like Taylors' Country music, her biggest hit was Love Story. I won't post YT links because that is currently against the rules. I saw her at the Prudential Center when the album Red came out. I thought it was one of the best Performances I have ever seen in person. She packs them in and appeals more to a young audience mostly teenage girls and young women.

Now back to Football, Cheifs pulled it out in Buffalo. Going to be an interesting game in Baltimore. Lamar Jackson had a great 2nd half this past weekend. The Chiefs will have a tough time with them. I think Baltimore goes all the way to the Super Bowl.

The Lions play San Francisco, home field advantage will probably be the difference there.

What is defined by quality ?? The group Kiss sure had a number of memorable songs that are considered "classic". But they are all bubblegum three chord progressive songs.

Like I said it's mostly subjective. Even the Beatle's 'say it's your birthday' is definitely one of those simple , bubble gum songs

Quality is a memorable, diverse tune and melody that flows together in a harmonious way. Listen to some of the early Carpenters songs. That is quality songwriting.

The lyrics are secondary, the fact it might have a beat to dance to is also secondary. The genre is also secondary, a great song is still a great song regardless of it being poppy or rock, or even in a country and western style.

I'm sure you know yourself in what is considered as a classic tune that is timeless and replayed a lot. This is what sticks with people, regardless of if they know how to play an instrument, can read music or not. It is instantly recognizable.

Sure, their are songs that remind people of times in their life that are memorable for having a dance beat etc, but if they were asked to speak honestly, they would say, well the songs not very good but I loved the beat to get down on the dance floor too.

Let's compare it with art. Little Timmy at 5 years old draws and crayons pictures constantly. The pictures are of stickmen families, typical of what any 5 year old can do. It entertains his mother, she compliments him and sticks them on the fridge. Years later, little Timmy looks back on these pictures with nostalgia, knowing, it could be called art, but not great art.

Bands of yesteryear often have a renaissance period where their first couple of albums are filled with great tunes and songs. This is often due to having a principal songwriter who later leaves to go solo, or the inspiration to create great songs dry's up and they produce lesser albums. The public becomes disinterested in these later efforts. U2 is an example, they lost it. They went on, like the Beatles, longer than most. The public, despite having no musical knowledge still recognize what was great and the nostalgia is for those first few albums alone, the best stuff.

When an old band reforms years later, for money or whatever, they just generally play their best material. They recognize it too.

Lets see you have the New York Knicks vs the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday at the Garden. Kicks have been hot lately according to the local news.

ESPN and Fox Sports will probably overloaded with College hoops. I'm sure you could bore yourself with the Pro Bowl to fill in a time slot ;>)
