Our closest neighbor is throwing himself a birthday party today (50th) and just invited me to come over to 'try the food'. Knowing him - before committing I asked 'what are you serving'.


A whole alligator - smoked with vegetables. Seriously. Like the photo here:

I will so NOT be there - may not eat for a couple days with that in my mind. I know - that's not 'adventurous'...oh well.

    I cannot even look at that picture at all as I am squeamish.

    But you should have just offered to bring some potluck thing,
    brought him a cheap gift and kept the peace.

    I don't want to read about you in the news where something
    happened in a neighbor dispute because you snubbed his
    50th B-day party.

    Since that is your closest neighbor, you really should go.

    Just tell him you have a reptile allergy and eat your potluck.

    It wasn't an 'invitation invitation' - he has a whole list of his fam0ily and his guy-buddies coming. It was a 'stop over if you want'....I think he was dying to tell me what the menu was....
    Besides - if it rains more he'll be moving his party into our party barn...we've told him he's welcome to use it.


    I had never heard of this 'meal' and it's fine if I never hear of it again.

    I wouldn't mind tasting alligator....but the visual of seeing the head of a dead animal (pig, fish or reptile) would really bother me.

    But putting out a whole animal for food? Maybe it's a macho guy thing, I don't know.

      The first time my wife, who is Asian, met my parents, they were interested in eating some "real" Chinese food. We got ready to sit down and eat and my mom urgently called me in the next room. She said that there was a dead fish on the dining room table. I went and looked and it was a whole fish, cooked the "real" Chinese way. My mom was trying to hold back the gagging just looking at it. Because you know gagging when someone cooked something for you is kinda rude. But then when she was convinced to take a bite, she actually liked it.

    Sounds like a bunch of Croc to me. Waiter, get me my Alligator dinner and make it snappy, Oh, and I'll have some Gator aid to drink.

    I expect it will be rubbery in texture like squid or octopus. There is obviously a reason why we stick to traditional, proven, tasty meats. Not something I would look forward too.

    Please report back on it's flavor if you go, I may be wrong about this.

      It farm raised and probably breed for a more pleasant texture. Kill it skin it brine it freeze it ship it.

      Says the texture is similar to pork and chicken. So say chicken breast or pork loin but at10x the price

    Gator tail is actually delicious. I can understand why people wouldn't care to indulge in eating a giant lizard, but once you get past the mental woe... it's really clean white meat.

    I eat meat but I've always drawn the line at eating young animals. I understand 'livestock' - most of my uncles were big time farmers. Just as crops are allowed to grow to maturity before they are harvested, I think livestock deserves the same. I don't eat veal or lamb....and a gator this size is also a 'young'un'. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

      I am not a big Red meet eater ground beef I am fine with. But pork and chicken are just much simpler to cook and make taste good. While being less expensive.

    Don't take too serious that you are not going although you know what triggered you to come up with your answer .

    Certain foods and food smells turns me off too
