Hilarious Tech Offer From HP

Yes, it appears that the tech giant, now somewhat floundering has made an offer that just about anyone can and will refuse.

You can now rent a printer from them instead of buying . Yes, you can now rent from them for the paltry sum of only 9 bucks a month. For that, you can have a printer which you could buy outright for about 80 dollars. They will replace the printer if it goes wrong and provide unlimited ink refills.

Only one problem, for that, you will only be able to print 22 pages per month. But, if you pay 13 bucks a month you can print 100 pages per month. How generous How's that for a bargain..Not!

Honestly, what are they thinking? Worst offer ever, lol

I suspect that HP is one of those companies who's printers will detect if you are using non HP cartridges, but perhaps you can refill originals or buy them refilled from Amazon for a lot less, certainly older ones.

My friend has a Canon, printer/scanner/copier, just a few years old. She buys replacement third party cartridges dirt cheap from Amazon, they work well. I have a Canon from 2008, still going strong.

What's your experience with printers and the price of ink?

    I have a Cannon, b/w Wi Fi enabled printer, which l bought after my other Cannon broke phew probably 5 years ago and get replacement cartridges online from Cannon, (tried Ebay with some third party one and it jammed).

    I have an HP printer/scanner and it's like that crazy girlfriend you had in college: moody, judgmental, goes offline at random times, needs constant reassurance and validation, and, even though it constantly asks for help, refuses to let me fix it. And I can't let her go because the evil I know is better than the evil I don't know. It's an abusive relationship.

      Yeah, never had much luck with HP, had one many years ago. The feed was temperamental. Worst than that was an early Epson color inkjet, the 600 series. I used to work at a computer superstore in the UK. We had so many of them back. But, the print quality was excellent. So, against my better judgement, I bought one. And true to form, it completely failed just out of warranty.

      Another latest from HP, equally hilarious, about the checking chip they had in the printer, if not their legitimate chips in their genuine cartridges, getting third party, dangerous, it could have a virus in it that could be transmitted to the PC. lol. Not one single instance of that has ever been reported.

      I would be quite happy if HP and the others who do this just made a solid product and put the price up to get a reasonable profit and not worry about the ink side.

      Another thing, the tech in printers has not changed much at all. You could buy a printer as new but but it is exactly the same printer first brought out several years ago.

      Anyway, Canon has been a solid investment to me so far. and a few others over the years. The least problems and third party cartridges available. So if you ever change it.....

      A good test if you are looking, is to go on Amazon and look for third party cartridges for the model that you are looking at.

      My non computer savvy friend tried them all. Lexmark, HP, Epson. All failed. But the Canon I got her several years ago, still going strong.

    When corporations offer these "deals" they have done
    extensive market research to ensure profitability. I don't
    know what the wholesale cost of that printer is but their
    cost is probably covered in less than 6 months, so after
    that it's all profit.

    This business model is the same as AT&T leasing their
    telephones and you paid thousands of dollars for a rotary
    phone that you had for 20 years.

    For the youngsters reading this, back in the olden days
    you couldn't just buy a telephone, you had to lease it.

    I print quite a bit so their limitations wouldn't work for me,
    and I prefer to own things not rent them, but there are
    people who would go for this because they can't afford
    to buy a printer, or whatever reason.

    I won't go into my printer story but I have one in use
    and one NIB in case the one in use stops working and
    I purchase cartridges from Amazon.

      Seriously though, 9 bucks a month with a 22 page per month print limit?. I would love to see the stats of the signup uptake. That's 108 dollars "per year" to rent a printer that you can buy with ink and print 100's for around 80 bucks. And replace the ink yourself for cheap. No research here to my mind. Strikes of desperation to make money. Although, I do realize that people use printers less these days.

    I currently use a Brother DCP-7040 that we used to use at work, it's a great workhorse, I do not remember how old it is but I have been using it here at home. I also have a Brother colored printer the colored ink kept running out. I got tired of paying for the inks, since that time it's been put on the shelf in the closet.

    The HP color laser printer I've had for many years cost only slightly more that a set of official HP replacement ink cartridges. But at least most compatible cartridges work OK with it.

    My current Canon inkjet is reliable but I only use Canon inks as others don't achieve the same quality prints. It's either that or have it converted to run on cheaper liquids such as Chanel No. 5 or human blood.

      Human blood I understand works best. I have never been comfortable with my prints smelling like a Turkish Brothel.

      Not had the same experiences with third party Canon ink cartridges, but not one to print out photo's very often, so can't pronounce on it. But it's fine for general use.

      I have heard about color laser cartridge based printers being far less problematical and last a long time and cheaper per page if you print often. Not something I do much these days.

    Another new one on the strange behavior of HP. From Lous Rossman. A right to repair advocate.

    HP bring out all in one fax, copier, printer and scanner units. Apparently if you have one and just want to scan It will not work if the ink is out or cartridge missing. So we need ink to scan?

    There is a current lawsuit against them for this from someone who wanted to scan and send an important document. Fortunately the judge has let it proceed,

    We will see. I wonder if a recall is on the cards, lol.

    Just stay away from HP products.
