Thought I would start this Paris Olympic Thread. A place where you can provide dialogue and commentary on all your favorite sports involved n the 33rd Olympics.

I'll start : just got through watching US's Katie Ledecky winning bronze for her 11th medal in the Olympics for the 400 meter swimming. I was hoping she would get Gold but can't be too down for what she did.

Shane's fellow Australian, Ariarne Titmus , took the Gold. Congrats !!!

Not really sure how to describe this...

We just came up from the basement - more tornado warnings. My poor dog is so afraid of thunder and lighting she's been totally shaking for the last 45 minutes. Lightening has been spectacular tonight.

I did get to see the USA men's gymnastics team before the tornado alerts went off - they did a great job today!

So far the US has 25 Medals according to this site - https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/medals

4 Golds, 10 Silver, 11 Bronze. France is the second highest, China is in third place. Followed by Japan, and others. Great Britain has 11 and Australia has 10.

I have not watched more than 10 minutes so far. Only caught part of the women skateboarding early Sunday morning on CNBC. Plus two Women in the Gymnastics competition. I do plan on watching more later in the week.

As of Tuesday 10 a.m. ET, 38 teams have earned at least one medal, but the only teams to reach double-digits are Team USA with 20; France with 16; China with 13; Japan with 12; and South Korea and Britain with 10.

I think the US has a decent split of bronze, silver and gold

The female gymnastic qualifiers were a treat to watch for me. Look forward to the finals for gymnastics.

Simone Biles is truly amazing - she took a lot of flak for withdrawing in 2020 due to spatial issues. At 27 she is back with a vengeance - what a performance.

I can't even imagine the work and discipline necessary to maintain that level of physical ability....and the mental stress must be off the charts.

I agree with that statement. The whole team was a comeback story. Suni Lee with her return after suffering kindy disease. They were all impressive yesterday. I was glad to see them walk off with the gold. They all looked like they had a lot of fun.

I liked the way NBC programmed the show with limited commercials. Two USA gymnastics competitors followed by a rival than Simone would perform her routine. Not once did she seem like her slight injury a few days ago bothered her at all.

I admired the interaction of the American teams - in mens and womens gymnastics. They are so accepting and supportive of each other and I agree the programming this year has made it far easier to watch the US teams and SOME of the better competition without hours of sorting through to find them.

Simone Biles was almost 12 ft OFF the floor in one of her tumbling runs yesterday....and she's 4'8" tall. She like a human spring.

With 8 gold medals and the level of dominance in her races...well iam not so sure Katie Ledecky is not the greatest Olympian ever !!!

I don't believe there is a 'greatest ever' but there are some real greats in the US teams. I do wish NBC wouldn't get quite so excited about celebs in the audience....sort of reminds me of 'SQUIRREL!!!!'.

I've read a couple articles claiming the pool in Paris is 'slow' - the technical stuff seems to be that it's 7ft 3/4 in deep where the last few Olympic pools have been 9.8 feet. Minimum depth for Olympics is 2 meters and this pool is 2.15....but the standard in the past and for world competition has been 3 meters. The depth is the reason being given for not breaking any world or other records this year.

I'm going to need to research more and think about it - I understand why 2.8 ft more depth would affect diving results but not why it would affect swim races. Dust off my physics? I'm sure it's some sort of 'drag' or 'resistance' calcs but way above my math skills.

When the pool is shallow, there's more surface wake because the displacement has less area to move. It makes the water choppy, and choppy water makes for slow swimming.

That makes sense - I used to boat on a lake just North of Atlanta - a long, narrow and not terribly deep lake. I've never seen water get so rough so fast in a storm as on that lake.

Guess the same principle would work in a pool...but don't tell Ledecky that...

Simone was perfect the other night she deserves those gold medals. Last night I watched the men's Diving and Swimming. Just my .02 the Chinese swimmers looked like they used steroids compared to the French Gold Winner.

Also, I caught the US win a medal in track. The guy moved up to the Mountains in Colorado to get use to not getting enough oxygen. Very interesting way to train.

I wish NBC would show some other sports in the Olympics without subscribing to Peacock. Or show some highlights on Primetime. I saw a video clip from the Men's Kayaking Down Rapids the other day. I prefer some of those events over, Basket Ball or some Track and Field events. USA Network had Badmitton on last night, and CNBC had Bike Racing over the weekend. A little different than the same old same old.

I would have watched both of them if I knew they were on during Prime Time. I didn't know Wall Climbing was even at the Olympics.

Yesterday they had Hand Ball on USA Network, it looks like a combination of Soccer, Rugby, and Basketball. That is more interesting than watching the NBA professionals play. If I wanted to watch Basketball, I would watch it during the regular season.

I dislike top professionals playing against Amatures, especially in men's Basketball or other team sports. Agreed. I have a serious issue with making the athlete correct a judge's error - and having only one minute to do so is silly.

Chiles earned the corrected score - which should have been the original official score. The judges made the error, yet it's the athlete who gets punished.

At worst, the two athletes should share bronze. At best, the corrected score should stand.

And now we're saying they submitted the request on time? Egregious!

Because the American team is so cocky - assuming they will win - bragging they will win...and I don't care for a few members of the team.

The best solution I've heard proposed for the gymnastic kerfluffle is to award a three way tie for 3rd... Romania proposed the idea and it would be the kindest option for all.

Robert, did you watch the men's Basketball between the US and Serbia? Serbia almost pulled the upset. On another note, I watched some Track and Field and caught a segment where they showed rock climbing. Also on the USA channel, they had Indoor Bike Racing. I watched most of the race. The winner from France was knocked off his bike with 25 laps to go. He had lapped more than half the field early on so the the crash did not affect the final results.

In the Paris Olympics, Pakistan won their first-ever Athletics Gold medal. can you imagine a country with a population of 225 million people winning their 1st gold medal?

Great idea starting this thread! Katie Ledecky's bronze in the 400 meters is still an incredible achievement--11 Olympic medals is nothing short of remarkable. It's fantastic to see her continue to perform at such a high level. Ariarne Titmus's gold is well-deserved, and it was an impressive race from her. Looking forward to more thrilling moments as the Games continue!

Just an FYI - the games ended last weekend. The next Olympics will be the Winter Events in February 2024 in Italy.
