Hi Y'all

I was just wondering how many of us here practice Zazen.

I keep on reading lately people with titles under their name that says Zen Rhino or Zen Redneck or people whose avatar is of an oriental spiritual practice, so the better of me got curious.

How many of us here actually do Zen?

Me - Zen Center Philippines - Sambo Kyodan.

Zen as a way of life for the most part.
    1. Simplicity
    2. Non-interference
    3. Non judgement
    4. Non-hoarding

    Etc; etc.

I like that zen uses examples in nature to explain very complicated problems; or to prescribe a way of being.

"Why is the ocean the greatest body of water on earth?"

    "Because it stays lower."

Message: Stay still, stay humble and all great things will come to you.

        Zen,

not so much... although I am continually becoming more relaxed with age.

Kaizen (the practice of continual improvement) most definitely.

        Kindest regards,
        Karl.

I also use the nickname zenmagic as my username even though my avatar is not so zen at all. In real life, I actually practice Buddhist meditation and I'm really inclined to Zen teachings since I've been reading lots of books and teachings from the great Zen masters like Thich Nhat Hanh and Suzuki Roshi.

Btw maybe this is a bit off topic but If you've read Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Earth", he also borrowed a lot from the teachings and stories of the Zen masters. And yes, I practice Zazen as well. Maybe we can create a zen group or something? :-)

When I compete in ballroom dancing, I try to have a zen-like attitude of non-judgement. I don't judge if what I am doing was good or bad. I just focus on what I am doing now.

Living in and for the present is the basis for every action I take.

It's not just a practice or belief, it is a way of life.

For anyone curious, get to know this man's works: Official Website of Eckhart Tolle, Author of A New Earth

        Raul,

I chose the "title" because it accurately explains the sometimes wildly different attitudes reflected in my posts.

On some things, I'm pure redneck. On others, I have a very Zen-like approach. The latter is more likely when dealing with issues of attachment to one's image of one's self (also called "ego").

I don't practice Zen as a way of life, but I do incorporate much of the mental state in my personal philosophy.

I found zen very interesting when I discovered it.
I am attracted by it but also by other indian and
eastern ancient philosophies, but not all of them.

I just lost my dog, a boxer, last month, and his
name was Zen, and he was very zen by the way.

I've never attended a center, but I practiced zazen daily for about 2 years (then I fell off for a year & a half. I'm reincorporating it into my daily routine now though).

Anyone interested in the subject should definitely check out the book Zen and the Brain by James Austin. He's a neuroscientist who began studying Zen on a sabbatical to Japan years ago, and has written about what science can tell us about how meditation changes the brain, and what the "enlightenment" process is from a neurological perspective. VERY interesting stuff.

I have read a bit about Zen and it sounds pretty cool. What is cooler are these quotes from that movie called Fight Club:

“No fear. No distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.”

“I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let’s evolve, let the chips fall where they may.”

“It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”

“You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your ****ing khakis.”

“People do it everyday, they talk to themselves… they see themselves as they’d like to be, they don’t have the courage you have, to just run with it.”

“Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.

“This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at a time.”

I love the concept of 'being in the middle' - that all creatures see themselves the same as we do, as in the middle of everything - but also 'in the way'. The ways that we get in the way of ourselves and the paradox it creates are a great example of the Ying/Yang in action.

We love life but know that the thing that gives it meaning is that our death is impending.

One thing we all have in common is our impermanence.
