OMIGOD!

This is a major blow. I have always loved Dennis Hopper - young, old or whatever.

He really played some despicable characters and yet I just got a kick out of how diabolical he could play.

I usually hate seeing an actor I like play a really bad person - it tends to stick with me and I never like them that much again - not really fair since they are acting - but just a quirk of mine - 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree' -

At least we have his great body of work to always keep him alive.

At least he lived to be 74!

Rock on Dennis...

(note the gaggle of stars passing in a cluster AGAIN - the two musicians, Gary Coleman and now Dennis - all in about a week or so).

I remember him from Big Valley and most recently, 24.

Boy did he play a great bad guy.

I saw Easy Rider recently and loved it, one of the best films I have ever seen. Denis Hopper gave a great performance. Watching from the UK, I it thought it represented what is great about America. The freedom, the huge scale, the individualism, those bikes! It also had an awesome soundtrack.
There showing some stuff about him on the BBC news now.

What I liked about Dennis Hopper also was that he was an art collector and very knowledgeable about contemporary art. He started collecting in the 50s before he really had much money at all.

Yes you make a fair point! I was looking more at fascination with the two main characters who seemed to capture something of the of spirit escapism.

Motor cycling across cold and rainy Britain which is only around 350 miles wide, with small roads doesn't quite have the same appeal as riding through the vast open expanses shown in the film!

I think the vastness of the landscapes is why American road movies are so popular.

That Blue Velvet guy was the worst character Dennis Hopper ever played. It took me a while to get over it.

That was the only David Lynch movie I really didn't like - probably his biggest commercial success.

Rest in peace, Dennis Hopper. You are among the greatest in my book, man!

p.s. Anybody know what the name of the film was (saw it on cable) where Dennis Hopper played a very sadistic prison warden and - he ends up getting mutilated by this perp that he was having executed (who had magical powers)... It was really gorey.

Yeah, dennis hopper is one of those that just seemed to FIT in the role. In some cases, if I were to cast a film, I would have looked for HIM! well, like patrician said, he lived a good loong time and probably had a good life.
