Pets also Suffering from the oil spill

There's a crisis in LA as out of work families are surrendering family pets at animals shelters in record numbers.

Shelter workers told of families coming in with tears - they can't afford to feed themselves and can't afford to feed their pets.

Some of the cutest puppies and dogs you've ever seen. Healthy, trained, friendly and the rate of surrenders is said to be 8 times what it was a few weeks ago.

If any of you live in other areas of Louisiana or nearby and can take in a pet or foster a pet, they could use some help there. The idea of children having to give up their loved pet just breaks my heart and the animals have no way to know what's happening.

Just one more casualty at BP's door. But these victims won't get help.

    That is so sad, Kay.

I wish I was there and could at least "foster" a puppy.

(except I already know I would not want to give it up and it would kill me to do so)...

All I can do is pray that they will find good homes and the broken hearts will mend someday.

It's always the innocents that get hurt worst. My heart is heavy hearing this one.

I can't take in a pet - we have 11 here, two of which are dogs. Each was a rescue. My sister's heart keeps her broke but happy.

I have taken over little Ricky. We don't know how old he is but her young dog is 10 and the vet believes Ricky is older. Ricky is a special guy - he has bone cancer and I am doing everything in my power to save him. Even if he goes from old age, I am determined that he will NOT die from THIS.

Ricky is now about a half a month beyond the longest life span given for this cancer and is still walking, sometimes trotting, and is smiling a lot. We have a great time together and I have been trying to go slow so I don't overwhelm his system. Kill too much at once and it makes their blood toxic. In the next few days I will be hammering it for 72 hours and am confident of more remission.

Saving Ricky is almost more than I can manage right now. If I were rich, many of those people would have help to keep their pets. I would rather help families keep their loved ones than foster them. Everything I don't need to use to support my own decrepit little butt is going to saving Ricky. How fast they ingrain themselves in our souls.

I urge anyone who CAN, help a family by affording food, and medicine if needed - help the family keep their kids at home with them. It's the best way we can help a whole family.

    gareth,

Given your location, I don't know if you're kidding! 8-) There probably aren't.

BTW I would LOVE to get a dog, but my current situation really doesn't allow it. 8-(

Some good news - New Jersey and Virginia sent trucks to transport many of the abandoned pets to their states. PETA is providing spay/neuter.

There are states where the pet population has been properly managed. This isn't the case here along the coast.

It's great that many of the animals will be rehomed and have a second chance. Kudos to those states and animal lovers there!

Stories like this make me sad, although this one sounds like it does have a bit of a happier ending. We have always had rescue and shelter animals as pets. They are the best pets one can have.

Its the worst because the animals can't protect themselves and people can't really do much themselves to help because they are having a hard time. Hopefully, the spill we get all cleaned up and things will get back to normal.

Facts about the Oil Spill have essentially been swept under the rug by government and the media. Response to it has been as incompetent and corrupt as the response to Katrina before it. Lives are devastated by it. Of course, this is the direct result of the rush to offshore oil drilling as soon as a massive propaganda effort led to a temporary support of the idea by the fickle public. Now the truth is seeping out like an ugly oil spill despite massive efforts to suppress it.
