I came across this video and hadn't seen the movie in a few years. This is one of my favorite comedies ever. Here's Michael Palin and Kevin Kline from A Fish Called Wanda:

Wow, you got that one right Michael! You are in top form.

Apparently you don't think A Fish Called Wanda is funny. That doesn't surprise me at all. However, many who have an actual sense of humor think it's one of the funniest comedies of all time.

So Michael, you know a comedy is supposed to be funny. However, what is really funny is you don't realize great comedy when you see it.

So Michael, you know a comedy is supposed to be funny. However, what is really funny is you don't realize great comedy when you see it.
        That's true.

        Thanks for the clarification.

I keep forgetting that the critics are always right. And you're always right.

So, are you suggesting that comedy is objective and not subjective? What's funny for some isn't funny for others. Personally, making fun of a speech impediment isn't funny to me - it's the equivalent of hitting someone in the groin for laughs. It's a cheap shot. If you find cheap humor funny, that's okay, I'm not going to put you down for it.

Anyway, I suppose there's a chance we may agree on some funny movies.

Do you happen to find The Holy Grail or This Is Spinal Tap to be funny?

Oh, and I have no idea where they rank on somebody else's list, nor do I care where they rank on somebody else's list. If I think something is funny, then I do; if I don't then I don't. I don't need another list to justify what I think is funny or not.

        All the best,
        Michael

Look, you had to make a snide comment to my thread. I posted something I thought was funny and might be interesting to others. You felt compelled to slam my subjective choice of what is funny or not. I pointed out I am not alone in thinking A Fish Called Wanda is a great movie. Now you feel compelled to slam the critics and lists who agree with me and also myself again.

So don't accuse me of being someone who is passing judgment on what is funny or not. You are the one who obviously is guilty of doing so in this thread. In my book, that is being a hypocrite. Seems to me this quote is better suited for you than myself: "Passing judgment based upon what someone finds funny is pointless intolerance."

BTW, yes I love Holy Grail and Spinal Tap was funny because of the satire of the pretentiousness of the rock music industry/culture which you obviously buy into.

PS... thanks for derailing my thread. Maybe I will return the favor some time.

pss...BTW, many people may find WC Fields unfunny, unwatchable and politically incorrect. His onscreen character hated kids, people, women, dogs and loved to drink booze. Personally, I won't hold that against his humor.

I didn't derail it at all, but no matter.

See, my initial post perfectly points out how subjective comedy can be. Allow me to explain.

When Jeff Foxworthy first hit it big, I made up my own redneck joke. It went like this:

You might be a redneck if...

...you actually think Jeff Foxworthy is funny.

To be honest, some of his stuff WAS funny, but I was trying to do a 360 on the source material for comedic effect. I will be the first to admit that not everybody "gets" it, in fact, most don't.

Unfortunately, you can't hear the "tone" of the delivery in the written word.

What I'm saying is that my initial comment was meant as a joke in the same vein as my take on the redneck joke.

No need to take it so personally - it was a joke. Nothing more. I will also be the first to admit that if I have to explain it, then it isn't funny. That's okay, too. You know why? Because the best comedy comes with the most risk - sometimes you have to fall flat to get a few zingers through.

Does that make me a moron, too?

Be careful using that word because the last time I used it Mr Myers threatened me with cruel and unusual forum punishment. I'm not sure exactly what the punishment was, but I knew he was serious when he referred to me as "Mr. Phelan". He usually refers to me affectionately as "that pompous a$$hole".

I perused the lists Tim posted and I have to say, what some people consider good comedy is baffling. Believe it or not, for many of us stupid != funny.

A significant proportion of those lists are movies many people would not sit through. In fact I would go so far as to say those lists prove that anyone with an Internet connection can post whatever they want.

Humour is hugely subjective. What one person finds hilarious others find puerile. Passing judgment based upon what someone finds funny is pointless intolerance.

How about some William Claude Fields to lighten up

    Uh.........Tim?

I can't tell if you are joking around in here or not. Are these lists actually meaning something to you or are you just being slapsticky?

A fish called Wanda to me was "cute" but I didn't see it as hillarious.

Cats 'n' Dogs made me laugh out loud - a lot - so that one I have to call really funny. I saw Meet the Fockers after that one and I had heard good reviews of that movie, and I thought it was boring. I don't think they got an actual laugh out of me the whole movie.

Here's the movie scene that got me the hardest - I laughed about this for years after that movie and seeing it again is still making me chuckle:

Marx Bro's are my all time favorites - I like well done slapstick.

Sal, I didn't look for these lists until Mikey felt a need to say he didn't like my choice and I then wanted to defend it. I loved that movie. There are so many good lines and great acting that is really is a classic. It isn't just critics who liked it, but comedy fans. BTW, most of those lists I posted aren't just some dude living in the basement who makes these things up. They are compiled by viewers and critics alike.

Here's another stat people can ignore if they want: A Fish Called Wanda was one of only 24 movies to be named on all three of the American Film Institute, Bravo and Readers' Digest "top 100 funniest" lists.

You didn't LOL at it? Fine.

LOL - I forgot about Owen Wilson. He's awesome with Jacky Chan.

Tim - well, that explains it. I don't think Michael meant any offense when he said he didn't think the movie was funny. Neither did I. But I just didn't like that one. I'm sure there are some that I really do like that you don't, too.
I just wondered why everything got so defensive between you and Mike.

For TV - My sister and I sit and just howl at Two and a Half Men, so it's not like I consider myself the most sophisticated of humor buffs. In fact - where funny is concerned I can be damned tasteless. What the heck - I don't give a rip as long as I'm laughing at something.

I think that one thing has to be considered -the difference between English and U.S. humour (and I'm not saying one is better than the other!)

For instance, I have not laughed once at "Friends", but obviously it must be funny to some people.

I think the great scenes can be instantly recalled by a couple of words e'g' "chicken soup", as mentioned above.

For U.K. people, just the words "dead parrot" and "four candles" will raise a smile.

What was actually a thread that was suppose to probably make you smile and laugh if you opened it has turned quite serious and interesting.
Personally,I like A Fish Called Wanda. To me parts of it was funny, but it would never make any on my Top 10 movies I would take to a dersert inland with me list.
Some of those lists that were posted had many movies that should not have even been considered. Why? Because they haven't even been out long enough to be true classics. One of the definitions of classic is standing the test of time. If a movie has only been out 10 or 20 years, it has not done that yet.
Strangely enough, the movie I posted scenes from, The Princess Bride, I considered almost unwatchable when it first came out.Now I can watch it over and over.
Sal says she likes slapstick. I do too to an extent, but, and I said this in another thread a while back, I have never liked The Three Stooges nor seen what people find so funny about them.
But I love the Marx Brothers. I love WC Fields.I love Mae West.I love Our Gang, etc etc.
And don't forget Laurel and Hardy!

While I like Michael a whole lot, and Tim and I have had our own battles, I
have to agree with Tim on this one. I found Michael's remark, well, let's just
say it did kind of criticize Tim's choice. So I can see why his need to defend
      it by posting the lists.

My 2 cents on the subject?

Comedy is VERY subjective. I have been bored to tears by movies that
people told me were outrageously funny. On the other hand, I have found
some movies that were supposed to be serious an absolute scream in the
laugh department...especially horror movies. I can't take very many of
      them seriously.

Some people love the 3 Stooges and others hate them.

Nobody knows why some comedy works for some and not for others, and
the fact that a whole bunch of people like something is meaningless in
      my book.

A movie is only funny if it's funny to you.

Because of that, I will never judge or criticize somebody else's taste in
comedy, even if it's offensive comedy like Andrew Dice Clay. I actually
loved him and thought he was hysterical, but I can understand some
      people finding him very offensive.

We tend to become so emotionally attached to the things we love and
hate, sometimes to the point where we either feel the need to slam
somebody else for their preferences or defend ours to the death.

It's the one part of human nature that I am less than proud of and
because of it, try each day to be as objective and open minded as I
      can about things.

I didn't see A Fish Called Wanda nor did I watch the clip, so I can't
comment on it. But even if I could, I'd never criticize somebody else's
      enjoyment of the movie.

Robot Monster was said to be the worst movie ever made, next to Plan
      9 From Outer Space.

I enjoyed it immensely...especially the scene when the girl died and the
mother and rest of the family were walking away with her crying.

I was laughing so hard I almost split my sides.

Some people might have thought I was being insensitive. But the acting
was SO bad, you couldn't help but laugh.

At least that's how I saw it.

      Others?

Some might have been moved to tears.
Some might have found it boring.
Some might have never even got to that part of the movie.

      Yeah, it was THAT bad.

Point is, taste is taste and there is no technical right or wrong when it
comes to what we like, at least as far as entertainment goes.

That's why you can read two critics reviews of a movie and one will love
it and another will hate it.

If you think I'm kidding, go to rottentomatoes.com and read some reviews
of some of the biggest movies of our time.

You would think these people were watching two different movies based
      on the reviews.

Tim, if you thought A Fish Called Wanda was funny, that's all that matters.

It's one more smile brought to you in life that wouldn't have been there
      otherwise.

That's all true, Steve. There are just degrees of funny, too.

When I mention "funny" in a post like this, I mean ROTFL hillarious. I haven't seen anything listed on this thread as less than humorous. But sometimes something just sends you in to convulsive fits of laughter at the time and later you can't figure out even yourself why it struck you so darned hard.

Frank -- some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in my life was British. I find it funny, too, that for as formal and civil as the British are in their day to day society - their humor can be extremely raw. Go figure.

Immediately after reading this thread I jumped on to YouYube and watched videos of Peter Cook, who I find supremely talented in that he makes the most banal and ordinary remark funny. The words in themselves aren't funny, it's all in the intonation and timing. Watch him discussing intestines with John Cleese, who is desperately trying not too laugh.

I find American humor is more visual, while British humor is more verbal.

I also found I was in great company admiring Peter Cook, people like John Cleese, Michael Palin and Steven Fry, who know a thing or two about comedy.

But your right Sal - how can you compare Peter with Benny Hill?

P.S. If you haven't seen Peter Cook, look him up on Youtube. On the other hand, you may not find him funny at all!

There was also another clue in my first post that astute viewers may have picked up on.

I didn't want to reveal this, ever, but it may help.

    What is it?

It's the way I sign my name.

    When I sign it
    All the best,
    Michael
It means that I am being serious(ish), or that I am really standing behind what I say, or that the response I am responding to is worthy of additional thought - that kind of thing.

    When I sign it as
    ~Michael
It is usually as a follow-up of some kind; where I have responded several times to the same poster within a thread. I will also use that sign off if I give a quick tip or other short answer.

However, when I sign a post with an

That's my shorthand to say I'm trying to be funny, to not take what I'm saying to seriously.

If you go through any of my previous posts and see any signed with ~M~, then you will (hopefully) see they were meant to be funny and light-hearted.

I get it, Tim doesn't like me. He made that very clear in previous threads. I don't know what he has against me, but in retrospect, I guess it was wrong for me to give him the benefit of the doubt and try my own brand of offbeat humor in "his" thread.

So, my apologies to everybody if my attempt at humor fell flat. It happens. No hard feelings?

    All the best,
    Michael

p.s. Notice the way I signed off to show I'm being serious.

p.p.s. Again, showing just how subjective comedy can be.

It's the way I sign my name.

When I sign it asIt is usually as a follow-up of some kind; where I have responded several times to the same poster within a thread. I will also use that sign off if I give a quick tip or other short answer.

Thanks for explaining Michael. Honestly, I didn't get it either but I never
noticed that you sign your posts differently depending on whether you're
      serious or not.

Shows you how observant (NOT) I am.

But yes, the written word doesn't always come off as intended. In fact,
I think more often than not, it comes across all wrong.

Especially when I'M the one writing it.

I'm definitely giving you a run for your money in this thread.

I think my funniest scene from a movie is in 'Cheech & Chong' 'Up In Smoke' when the women snorts ajax thinking its cocaine.
