I Am Back To Square 1 With Anti Virus

Well, I tried PC Tools, and while it seems to pick up everything under the
sun, it has slowed things down to a crawl and has crashed my PC...and I
wasn't even home at the time. It was just doing an update when the thing
died.

I would be in the middle of typing and the AV takes up so many resources
that sometimes I'd have to wait 5 to 10 seconds for the next few characters
to display. This is just unacceptable. I never had this problem with
Kaspersky. Even typing forum posts was becoming a nightmare as the
PC couldn't keep up with my typing speed and I'm only like 40 WPM.

I know a part of the problem has to be that this crappy Windows OS (XP
Pro) is falling apart and has been for some time. That's why I didn't want to
uninstall Kaspersky. But they told me they couldn't just renew my license
after practically begging them.

So now I'm left with no choice but to buy Kaspersky 11. I don't even dare
mess with anything that I've never used before...not after this nightmare
of an experience.

So while I'm sure all your AV software that you use is great, because my
PC is being held together with duck tape, I can't afford to take the chance
on it. So thanks for your suggestions but I'm going to stick with Kaspersky 11
and hope that at least performs as well as version 9 did. I was very happy
with it. The only thing slow about it was the actual start up of my PC
(took about 11 minutes) but after that, fast as anything.

Anyway, I tried to do a system restore to just before I installed PC Tools
but it wouldn't let me. I tried other restore points too but no good. So I
simply uninstalled PC Tools and am now going to go to Kasperky's site and
try again.

Oh, and in case you're wondering why I'm typing this long post, it's to see
if the lag was in fact caused by PC Tools. No doubt about it, it was.

Wish me luck on getting this PC protected again.

    Steven,
I pretty much gave you the solution. Malwarebytes.
But, if I were you I would back up everything on your drive you need to save because there is a good possibility your hard drive is about to fail.
    Good Luck.

Thanks Kim, I have triple redundancy on my data.

      1. Mirrored Raided Hard Drives
      2. External Hard Drive
      3. Carbonite

I will eventually have to reinstall this crappy OS. I know it. I'm just waiting
for a more convenient time to do so because I hate having to reinstall
all the programs that I use. That's a real pain in the ass.

Anyway, installed Kaspersky 2011 and this thing is running like a speeding
      locomotive again.

I should have just upgraded my Kaspersky in the first place.

Re-installing is quite a pain, if you get a new PC I suggest going Windows 7, it's like XP but better.

Kaspersky is a great AV too, though I currently use NOD32, fast, low memory usage and catches everything, pretty much a side by side competitor to Kaspersky.

They have a 30 day fully functional trial.

Hopefully I won't have to reinstall for a very long time!

Steve -- go right click on your AV files in "programs" and go to "Properties" set it to "read only" that will take a lot of the strain off. I went through the same thing with my Avast.

If you want to see a computer that's ready to pull a flintstone it's this one.
You might also have other programs pinned to your start menu that you don't need to start automatically -- do a "control + alt + delete (hit them at the same time) and it will bring up your list of running programs. Just turn off the ones you don't need running at the time. I turn my OO off all the time - someday I'll unpin it from start, LOL.

Also - you can get xpantispy and turn off automatic updates so you won't have stuff running in the background when you're not aware of it. You can still ask for updates and get them, but they won't run while you're trying to do something else and slow you down when your not expecting it.
